Aunt Breaks Nephew’s Makeshift Fish Tank Killing His Betta, He Strikes Back In A Shocking Way

Sometimes, the smallest actions can cause the biggest rifts between family members. For one Redditor, a simple disagreement about fish tank care turned into a full-blown emotional battle.

After setting up a makeshift aquarium for his new betta fish, Eclipse, his aunt took matters into her own hands and dismantled it, leaving the fish to die in cold water.

What followed was a vengeful act that brought the battle to a boiling point.

Not the actual photo

'You took apart my fish tank? We both sink to the bottom?'

So to keep it simple, yesterday, I got a Siamese Fighting Fish (or known as a betta fish) named Eclipse (due to obvious reasons). I unfortunately didn't have a proper...

So I made one out of a large storage container from Home Depot (Plastic), a coffee mug, sponge filter + air pump, and a little bit of sand.

It wasn't perfect, but it would do until then.

So my aunt complains earlier this morning that "why you got this big ass container for this small ass fish" and "it dont need all that s__t" (for those who...

So I tried explaining to her that this isn't one of those "carnival goldfish" and needs certain criteria to thrive. And...that didn't work.

Anyway, I leave for school. I get a call from my girlfriend (god I f__king love her) that I can have her old 30 gallon aquarium + filter and heater.

I leave 2 hours early from school to put Eclipse in his new home... only to find that she took upon herself to dismantle my makeshift fish tank piece by...

When I confronted her she said "I told you her dont need all that s__t" and "thats what fish do". They swim and die. Bet.

So once she left to run errands, I went into the living room and grabbed her picture of her deceased grandfather (the only thing she has left related to him).

And I dismantled the frame, bit by bit. And when she comes back home, where's she gonna find the picture?

At the bottom of the bowl, torn into shreds, in freezing cold water, in the middle of her bedroom floor.

Sure, it might be a fish. But it was MY fish. MY money. MY joy. Literally murdered in cold blood.

Welp, tonight she's gonna learn just how little things can make a big difference. Swim in peace, Eclipse, who lasted as long as her namesake.

When viewed in context, the OP’s frustration makes sense.

Putting the fish in a large storage container, then discovering it dismantled and left in a Tupperware bowl, triggers strong emotional reactions because the care requirements for a betta fish were clearly not being met, and the result was predictably tragic.

From a husbandry standpoint, bettas are not suited to makeshift cups or small containers.

Several reliable sources agree that the minimum recommended tank size is 5 US gallons (about 19 litres) for a single betta, with many experts suggesting 8 or 10 gallons as even better for stability of environment.

For example, the University of Illinois notes: “They should not live in bowls. Instead, they should ideally be in a 5‑gallon glass or plastic tank or larger.”

Beyond size, bettas require a heater (to keep water around 78‑82 °F / 25‑28 °C), a gentle filter (to maintain water quality), and a lid (since they can jump) for their well‑being.

These standards underline why the aunt’s argument, “it doesn’t need all that stuff” and “that’s what fish do, they swim and die”, was profoundly misguided, ignoring fundamental needs.

In short, the OP had not only invested money and emotional care but was striving to meet the recognized standards for the species.

His aunt’s unilateral dismantling of the setup and the resulting demise of the fish is not just a trivial sibling or family squabble, it impacted a living being that requires a stable, appropriate environment.

The OP might document the resources they used (care sheets, tank size guidelines) to show the aunt the standard of care they were attempting, rather than just having a verbal dispute.

While the aunt’s behaviour is not excusable, reacting by destroying her sentimental item raises ethical questions: confronting the problem through communication or family mediation would likely serve better long‑term than escalating revenge.

In future, securing the fish’s habitat more firmly (locking or clearly designating the space) could prevent interference, especially if other household members do not share the same level of commitment.

The aunt could be shown authoritative articles about betta fish welfare (for example those cited above) to increase understanding and potentially mend the relationship.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

This group finds the petty revenge amusing, though some find it a bit too much.

Dr_mombie − Get her cheap fish-themed gifts every Christmas. Jesus fish magnets for her car. Cheap little figurines.

A scratched copy of Finding Nemo. 1 fish 2 fish red fish blue fish. Used books on the care and keeping of fish. Fish-themed home decor.

Fisherman-themed gifts people usually bought for outdoorsmen. Taxidermied mounted fish. Get her those old singing fish from eBay.

Make it motion-activated. Haunt her forever with fish stuff.

Hempsox − Not to condone the destruction of anyone's property, but DAMN! That is some scorched-earth kind of petty.

I would have gone with wrapping Eclipse in the picture and then put it in the bowl, in the water, on her floor.

Godfather style. Old photographs like the one you describe really don't like water.

EDIT: As another esteemed commenter suggested, I am unable to spell scorched on the first try. Corrected now.

Scruffersdad − That is the reaction k__ling your fish deserves. Can’t fix the photo? Can’t bring my fish back from the dead either, guess we’re even.

LossingMassivePots − This is the start of a long battle, keep us updated please.

snarkisms − Jfc, you don't take prisoners, do you? I don't know if I'm horrified or impressed...no, I'm definitely both.

This group warns that retaliatory actions like this could lead to long-term consequences and suggest OP reconsider their approach.

Guilty_Objective4602 − I hope you aren’t dependent on your aunt for a place to live.

Because this is the kind of thing a person as callous and petty as her is likely to go nuclear over and kick you out for.

But, this is definitely revenge served cold!

JunkSpelunk − Nothing about this is in the realm of petty. Both you and your aunt have just done some deeply, deeply disturbed things.

Please let this be the last calculatingly hurtful thing you do, because you will become more like your aunt every time you lash out this kind of way.

Quirky-Performer-310 − I LOVE fish. I have 75 and 100 Gallon tanks. But this is psychotic.

The aunt is a b__ch, but OP, you're a psychopath. Seek help. Seriously.

Personally, I couldn't have a personal relationship with someone who will escalate grievances to the point of creating trauma for someone and then brag about it on the internet.

Work on yourself because scorched-earth reactions like this will leave you alone in life, and you'll deserve it.

This group is appalled by the extreme nature of OP’s retaliation, especially the destruction of sentimental items.

Fabulous_Cow_4550 − Why would you get an animal you're not ready to properly look after?

Get the tank set up, then get the fish, not the other way around. As for destroying her only memento of her grandfather, that's beyond cruel.

You are both awful people. That poor fish didn't stand a chance with either of you.

Redpanda132053 − How old are you that you think this is a proportionate response? Based on your actions, you’ve never lost a close loved one.

Sucks your fish was killed, but that in no way justifies your escalation to destroying the ONLY memento of your aunt's grandfather.

My bedroom has dozens of mementos of my brother, and I would be devastated if someone destroyed even one.

RepulsiveInterview44 − Bloody hell. I am all for petty revenge, but as someone who only has precious few pictures from my deceased mother, I gasped when I got to the...

Your aunt sounds f__king horrible, but the picture bit is wayyyyy over the top IMO.

slasherbobasher − Oh, I am here for this! Please update us when she finds it!

These commenters support OP but also suggest moving out and securing a better living situation.

Mr_Gus3114 − I give my sword and loyalty to the army of Eclipse.

JinkieKittie − I’m so sorry for the loss of Eclipse. They would have had a wonderful life with you.

Your consideration of giving them a suitable, lovely home to live in is heartbreaking, knowing they never got to enjoy it.

Please store any valuables or sentimental items with your girlfriend or another trusted friend, as I would not trust anything I cared about to be left with your aunt.

I hope you’ll be in a position soon that you’ll no longer have to live with this horrible person and can have all the animals you want without fear for...

b2hcy0 − You know you need to start looking for your own place when she gets home?

When it comes to pets, emotions run deep, and this story proves just how far those feelings can go when it comes to family interference. The OP’s anger is understandable, his fish was more than just a pet; it was a responsibility, a symbol of care, and something he took pride in.

The balance between respecting each other’s property and understanding personal boundaries is a tricky one. What do you think—was this a justified retaliation, or did the OP go too far? Let us know in the comments!
