Aunt Ignores Birthday Requests for Years and Creates Gifts Only She Likes Making

A thoughtful gift does not always have to be expensive or perfect. For many people, the time and care behind a present are what matter most. However, there can be a difficult line between giving something meaningful and giving something that only reflects the giver’s own preferences.

A Reddit user found themselves stuck in this situation with their aunt, who spent years creating handmade birthday gifts despite being told exactly what they wanted. The user appreciated the effort but eventually reached a breaking point after receiving another item they had no use for.

When they finally shared their feelings, the reaction from their aunt and family was unexpected. Now they are asking whether honesty was the right choice or whether they should have stayed quiet. Scroll down to see the debate that followed.

A woman finally confronts her aunt after years of receiving handmade gifts she never asked for despite giving clear requests

'AITA for telling my aunt her homemade gift was not what I asked for and I would have preferred nothing?'

Every year my aunt asks me what I want for my birthday. Every year I tell her something specific.

Every year she ignores it completely and makes me something handmade instead.

This has been happening for about six years. I have received a knitted scarf in a color I do not wear,

a cross stitch with a quote I do not relate to, a homemade candle that smelled genuinely awful, and other things I cannot even fully remember.

I have smiled and said thank you every single time and then quietly donated or thrown away each one.

This year she asked me what I wanted and I told her a specific book, it costs about twelve pounds, easy to find, I sent her the exact title and...

She texted back saying she had a great idea for something special instead.

On my birthday she handed me a hand painted wooden sign with my name on it and a floral border.

I have no idea where I would put this in my home. I do not have that kind of decor. I never have.

Something in me just gave up. I thanked her and then quietly said that I appreciated the effort but when she asks me what I want

and I tell her specifically, it would mean a lot if she went with that sometimes.

I said I would genuinely have been happy with nothing rather than something I cannot use.

She cried. My mum called me later and said I was ungrateful and cruel and that my aunt spends weeks on these things.

I know she puts in effort. But effort toward something the person explicitly told you they do not want is not really a gift for them, it is a gift...

Gifts are often seen as symbols of love, but they can become complicated when the giver and receiver attach different meanings to them. A gift can represent care, creativity, and effort, yet it can also leave someone feeling unseen if it repeatedly ignores what they have actually expressed they want.

In this situation, the OP was not simply rejecting a handmade object. She was expressing years of frustration from feeling that her preferences were being asked for but never truly considered.

The emotional conflict comes from two different ideas of generosity. The aunt appears to believe that creating something personal is a deeper expression of affection than buying an item from a list. To her, the time, skill, and thought invested may be the most meaningful part of the gift.

However, the OP experiences the situation differently. After repeatedly giving specific requests, she feels that the actual act of listening has become the missing piece. The problem is not that the gifts are handmade.

It is that she feels like her aunt asks what she wants but then chooses something completely different every time. Over years, that pattern can create the feeling that the gift is more about the giver’s preferences than the recipient’s happiness.

A different perspective is that both people may be trying to express love in different “languages.” Some people show affection through creativity and personal effort, while others feel valued when someone remembers their stated wishes. The aunt may not have intended to dismiss the OP’s choices.

She may genuinely believe that a handmade item carries more emotional value than a purchased book. However, meaningful effort does not automatically replace understanding what another person enjoys. A carefully made gift can still miss the person it is meant for.

Psychologist Gary Chapman, known for his work on expressions of affection and the concept of different ways people experience love, has discussed how people often give care in the way that feels most natural to them. His ideas highlight that intentions and impact can sometimes differ, meaning someone can act from love while the other person still feels misunderstood.

This perspective helps explain why the conversation became emotional. The aunt likely heard criticism of her effort and creativity, while the OP was trying to communicate a need to feel heard.

Both reactions make sense. The challenge is recognizing that appreciation for effort and appreciation for the actual gift can exist separately. Someone can value the time spent making something while also wishing the person had chosen differently.

Ultimately, the issue is not whether handmade gifts are better than purchased gifts. It is whether a gift reflects the person receiving it. The OP could acknowledge the care behind her aunt’s creations while maintaining that future gifts would feel more meaningful if her preferences were respected.

The aunt’s effort matters, but so does the simple act of listening. A gift should be a bridge between two people, not a reminder that one person was never truly heard.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These commenters supported OP and said handmade gifts should consider the recipient’s taste

Mohsbeforehoes − NTA - as a huge maker (knitter, sewist, I make jewellery, paint, and engage in whatever else piques my interest)

I truly would never make something for someone, spending my time and money doing so,

without the knowledge from that person or someone they are close with that they would love/use the item I want to make for them.

More often then not - these gifts are more costly and take far more time than a store bought counterpart.

Likely, because each thing is handmade **chucking it into the bin would be worse**,

like you think aunt wouldn’t say “oh where is that sign I made you for your birthday?

” It’s baffling to me that people want to avoid a conversation and just throw it away.

Why even ask you what you want in the first place, if she’s just going to make something that isn’t even related?

I think that at the core is what makes it a gift for the aunt, and not for OP and it’s fair to bring that up.

WhiteKnightPrimal − NTA. In fact, I'd say you did something kind, because you've admitted, finally,

that all these homemade gifts that aunt likes but aren't about the recipient are a waste of money, time and effort.

But maybe a compromise? Your aunt keeps refusing to buy gifts, and clearly prefers homemade, she sees them as more special. Nothing wrong with that.

So, maybe, next time she asks what you want for your birthday, ask for something you want that can be handmade.

Like that scarf you mention, if the only thing wrong with it was the colour, maybe something like 'I've always wanted a purple scarf',

or whatever your fave colour or design is, and then you get something handmade that you actually want.

Aunt is clearly into making things in many ways, so you're not really limited beyond 'can be handmade'.

Would you like a nice little plaque you can hang on the wall, like this last gift, but with a design and quote you actually like?

Ask for that. Think of it as a way to get designs you wouldn't be able to buy.

If you love a show or book a great deal and would love to buy merch for it, but they don't sell any, or not what you'd like to display...

You can be involved in the process to some extent, because it's the thought and effort that counts.

This commenter focused on OP’s wording and judged the reaction as rude

SlideItIn100 − YTA. It’s unbelievable that you don’t think you were rude.

They suggested a compromise by asking for handmade items OP would actually enjoy

Awkward_Sandwitch − As someone who does arts and crafts, homemade gifts etc you are NTA at all.

I tend to run the gift idea by the person im makingnit for or someone who is close to them.

Example my mum loves flowers, I already gave her flowers so I thought id crochet a bouquet blanket instead.

I got mum to pick the yarn colour and she knew it would be her bday gift BUT I also knew shed like it. Same with MIL and my partner.

If I ask someone what they want for bday and they say a book. It is utterly stupid to give them random stuff they don't ask for.

Did it hurt your aunts feelings, yes sure, but this had to have been a conversation eventually.

Glittering_knave − NTA. BUT, since you have noticed a pattern (she ignores buying things and prefers to make them), can you ask for things that she can make for you?

Homemade washcloths for the kitchen? The super popular Sophie scarf? A sign that matches your decor?

These users felt OP had a valid point but delivered it too harshly

Deciduous-Jellyfish − You’re not wrong, but YTA.

locomama83 − ESH- you because what you said was rude even though it was the truth.

Your Aunt because she keeps asking you what you want then completely disregarding it to make you something she doesn’t even know you would like/use.

The_Coaltrain − I figured you must be about fifteen until I read the part about you having your own home.

Your behaviour is pretty immature. But I actually think this is ESH. It's pretty rude of her to ask what you want and then ignore it as well.

They criticized the aunt for asking preferences but ignoring them

Sleepycats2014 − I mean, why does aunt ask you, then give you something else? Would annoy me too. Why would they do that?

Setting up high hopes. THEN out of guilt you have to act gracious.

It's not fair. Don't set my hopes up, if you have no intention to honour my request, one that you asked about.

You'll be called the AH because aunts feelings were hurt, but why would she do that?

Why would she ask, only to have no intention whatsoever to honour it.

dragonsfriend-9271 − The aunt is pretending the object is a gift for OP. It isn't. It's an excuse for the aunt to do crafting that she enjoys

while taking NO account of whether it's something OP wants/needs/even likes. Yes you were rude but I don't care: NTA

Do you think the niece was too blunt, or was this a conversation that needed to happen after years of ignored requests?
