Aunt Offers To Fund Her Nieces’ Dream Party, But Her Sister Chooses A 50-Person Family Bash

Helping family is often done out of love, especially when children are involved. But sometimes a generous offer becomes complicated when the people receiving the help have different priorities.

The original poster has spent years supporting her sister’s family financially and emotionally, especially when it came to making sure her nieces still had special birthdays despite their parents’ struggles.

This time, she offered to cover an entire kids’ party, but her sister wanted something very different: a large gathering focused on extended family and adults. Now the poster is questioning whether she should continue helping or step back from the situation.

A woman wants to help her nieces celebrate but clashes with her sister over a party focused more on adults than the children

not the actual photo

'AITAH for not wanting to help with my nieces party?'

my older sister (29f) and brother-in-law (28m) have struggled financially for basically their entire adult lives.

they became parents to 3 girls really young, so i’ve always tried to give them grace and help where i can.

last year, my son turned 2. we had his birthday party about two weeks early because his actual birthday is usually too cold for outdoor stuff where we live.

my husband and i invited my sister to do a combined birthday party at our house for my niece, who was turning 8 around the same time.

because money was tight for them (and because they were stressing about costs constantly),

i ended up paying for basically everything for my niece’s side too — decorations, food, cake, etc.

i had already rented a bounce house for my son, but upgraded it so older kids could use it too.

i also promised my other two nieces (11 and 10) that i’d help make their birthday special this summer

because they did not have a party last year due to their parents finances.

so now their party is coming up in june. this past weekend, my nieces called me asking if i was still helping plan it.

obviously i said yes because i love them and would never want to disappoint them.

at first, my sister wanted to do the party at a park. my nieces didn’t even want that because it’ll be hot, humid, or raining.

i suggested renting out an arcade in my city and doing a stranger things-themed arcade party for 3 hours. the girls were so excited about it.

then my sister shut it down immediately because she said the “50 people she invited” wouldn’t want to drive 25 minutes.

here’s the thing: most of these people aren’t even there for the kids. half of them don’t have children, won’t bring gifts,

and are basically just my brother-in-law’s family/friends who turn every event into drinking, smoking, loud music, and drama.

my nieces didn’t even want a lot of them there in the first place.. meanwhile, i offered to pay for:

* the arcade rental.

* food.

* decorations.

* cake. basically everything.. but my sister still refused because she wants everyone to be able to come.

at that point i told her if the priority is hosting a giant cookout for adults instead of an actual kids birthday party, then she can pay for it herself.

now we’re arguing about what i “should” still contribute financially. and honestly, i’m frustrated because they’re planning to feed 50 people

while barely having groceries at home.

i literally had to doordash dinner to their family recently because they had no food.

at this point, i’m considering just mailing my nieces their gifts and stepping away from the whole thing. aitah?

UPDATE: so, update time since some people were asking for one.

for starters, i told my sister ahead of time that i will not be attending the party due to

my brother-in-laws extremely annoying family and i will not be helping with the costs because it is not what they want to do. instead of attending,

i sent my nieces money over cashapp two days after posting the original post and agreed to take them to the arcade next week for another birthday "party".

my sister and brother-in-law took their money and used it to buy fast food for themselves, my three nieces and my brother-in-laws aunt. so, there's that.

let's cut to this past sunday, their birthday party. it stormed the entire time and about 45 minutes before the party ended, it got extremely humid and gross.

their decorations were destroyed, the food was rained on, it was a mess.

just as i assumed, there were about 30 people there and they received TWO gifts each and around $150 each from their grandpa (my sisters father), mine and my sister's...

(my brother-in-laws sister)... one niece had NO friends there because the storm and the

other had a friend show up for about 30 minutes and left because of the rain. barely ANY kids were there.

my nieces are very much looking forward to going to the arcade and getting some boba.

they seemed so disappointed in their birthday party and i am genuinely upset for them.

i wish they would have had a better party, but i will always strive to give them the best, even if i look foolish.

Sometimes the hardest boundaries to set are with the people we love the most. Helping family can feel natural, especially when children are involved, but constant support can become painful when your kindness starts being treated as an obligation rather than a gift.

In this situation, the OP’s frustration is not really about a birthday party location. It is about feeling like her efforts are being redirected away from the people she originally wanted to help: her nieces. She stepped in because she cared about them and wanted them to have a special experience after missing out before.

She was willing to spend her own money, organize the event, and create something centered around the children. The conflict began when her sister prioritized a larger adult gathering over the type of celebration the girls actually wanted.

A different perspective is that OP’s sister may be trying to balance more than just a party. For some parents, family gatherings are about maintaining relationships, including relatives who expect invitations and involvement. She may see the large guest list as a way to bring everyone together rather than intentionally ignoring her daughters’ preferences.

However, when someone else is offering to fund the event, it becomes important to respect the purpose behind that help. Accepting a gift while changing the entire plan can create resentment.

Psychologist Harriet Lerner has written extensively about family relationships, emotional boundaries, and the difficulty of saying no to loved ones. She explains that healthy boundaries are not acts of rejection; they allow people to maintain relationships without losing themselves through guilt, pressure, or excessive responsibility.

This perspective helps explain why OP feels torn. She clearly loves her nieces and does not want them to experience disappointment.

At the same time, continuing to fund a celebration that goes against the children’s wishes may only reinforce a pattern where OP becomes responsible for solving problems created by other adults. Supporting family does not mean having unlimited responsibility for their financial choices or priorities.

The healthiest approach may be separating the children from the adult conflict. OP can still celebrate her nieces in a meaningful way, a special outing, gifts, a smaller experience, or time together, without taking responsibility for a 50-person event she does not believe serves them.

Her sister can choose to host the gathering she wants, but that choice should come with the responsibility of organizing and paying for it.

The important lesson is that generosity works best when it remains voluntary. A person who repeatedly gives because they feel guilty may eventually stop feeling generous and start feeling used. OP’s nieces are lucky to have someone who cares about their happiness, but caring for them does not require carrying the entire weight of their family’s decisions.

Let’s dive into the reactions from Reddit:

These commenters suggested celebrating the nieces separately with a child-focused event

Ok-CANACHK − take your nieces out for a 'Birthday Day' & let your sister have the home party she wants NTA

CarolinCLH − Plan a special day with you and the kids. Go to an arcade. Get cake or cupcakes. Let the parents handle the adult party

PurpleEmotional1401 − But you do want to help with your nieces' party. You just don't want to help with your sister's cookout for her adult friends.

As other have suggested, take the girls out for a special day. NTA

KLG999 − Your sister is clearly taking advantage of you. She is using you to throw a party for her friends, not your nieces.

Keep your boundary that you will give the kids the party they were excited about. NTA. If she won’t let you, plan a girls day that they are excited about

These users criticized the sister for expecting OP to fund an adult gathering

ElemWiz − "What are you doing planning such a huge event ON MY DIME when you can't even afford dinner? " NTA.

Ready_Willingness_82 − NTA, NTA, NTA. I’m sorry to say it,

but your sister is a freeloading parasite who wants you to pay for a party for her friends, not a birthday party for her daughters.

The problem you’ve got is that you’ve offered to pay for your nieces to have a birthday party,

and now they’re excited and you can’t back out without hurting them.

Know what I’d do? I’d throw a birthday party for your nieces and let them help you with the organisation, bypassing your sister altogether.

Book the arcade and ask your nieces to put together their own guest list and distribute the invitations at school.

They can write your phone number on the invitations so that the RSVPs come to you.

They might need help to distribute invitations to the friends who aren’t at their school.

Order the cake, buy the decorations and advise the arcade staff that you’ll provide them with a guest list so that anyone

who gate crashes will either be turned away or charged a full entrance fee and not allowed into the party section.

On the day, take your nieces and their sister to the party.

Your sister, as your nieces’ mother, can attend if she wishes, BY HERSELF OR WITH THEIR FATHER. This is a kids’ party, not a party for her friends.

This way, your nieces get the party you promised, get to be involved in the planning and organisation,

and you’re not paying to entertain a mob of adults who are adding no value to your nieces’ special occasion.

Adelucas − Reading between the lines her I can see why your sister and BIL are struggling.

They'd rather party with friends than step up and adult their kids.

You offered a wonderful day for the girls, the only response should be "OMG you are the best sibling ever"

not "Oh we want to invite 50 random adults to smoke, drink and party on your dime".

What's even in it for the girls? I hate to be "that guy" but you need to step back from saving them all the time.

By now they should have a handle on work, finances, the kids and their life.

Be the fun aunt to the kids, but feeding their own children should be a priority over everything else.

Work more hours, get a second job, find a better paid one. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's doable. Stop bailing them out.

I'm 62 and when my sister and I were young we knew poverty. My mother would skip meals to make sure my sister and I were fed.

She and dad worked hard, and they cut their expenses to the bone so that we had a roof over our head and food in our belly.

I rather suspect your sister and husband have areas they can cut down on, but don't want to.

These commenters supported keeping the original promise of a kids’ birthday celebration

hopingtothrive − Stop arguing. You offered a kids' party as your gift to your nieces just like the one for their 8 year old sister.

That is all you are offering. Not an adult booze party. Your sister can take it or leave it.

If she doesn't want the kid party at a park or arcade she can do her own thing.

Next time I suggest you do not make promises to children.

ExchangingThoughts − NTA, your sister is. She's selfishly making her child's birthday about herself.

You can still fulfill your promise to your nieces to make their birthday special. Have them over for a sleepover.

Take them to the movies, out to eat, to the arcade- just examples, but have them choose an activity or two.

Then campout in the living room- my nieces and nephews LOVED this when they were young. .set up a tent inside and they sleep in there.

Then make a yummy breakfast. They'll remember that forever!

BisforBeard − No, you did not have to DoorDash them food! They guilt-tripped you and you chose to give in.

It was their decision to have 3 children without a means to support them and that is not your fault. .. and you have your own family.

Was she right to step back, or should she have accepted the larger celebration? How would you handle helping family when expectations keep growing? Share your thoughts below!
