Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are fueling the fire for a third season of Big Little Lies! In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the co-stars discussed their plans and revealed exciting news for fans.
Witherspoon playfully recounted how her initial comments about discussions for a potential season three snowballed. She revealed, “I get the ring ring: ‘Hey, is [season 3] happening?’ Like, Nic,” turning to Kidman, “You got excited.”
Kidman acknowledged her enthusiasm, stating, “I got excited.”
Witherspoon continued, adding to the amusement, “It’s OK, baby. I get excited too. Then I’ve got Laura [Dern] calling me and Zoe [Kravitz] and Shailene [Woodley]. They’re all like, ‘Nic said that we’re making Big Little Lies season three?'”
Kidman then dropped the exciting news: “But we are now! We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane [Moriarty, the author] is delivering the book,” she said. “Yeah, and we’re in good shape.”
Learning from the frenzy caused by her earlier remarks, Kidman joked that they should “shut up” from now on. She explained, “There’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it.”
Witherspoon echoed this sentiment with humor, stating, “Well, I have a rule. It’s called, ‘Don’t be full of shit,'” she said laughing. “It’s called ‘The No-BS Rule in Hollywood,’ because how many people tell you they’re doing X, Y, Z, X, Y, Z? It’s like, ‘I don’t want to talk about it until I’m standing in the costume on the set.’ Then I will confirm to you that it’s happening. It’s really hard to stop it once you’re standing on set in costume.”
According to sources for The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon and Kidman had already formulated ideas for a third season and were planning to formally pitch them to HBO in January. In an Elle interview, Kidman elaborated on the need for time to develop the next storylines.
“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman said.
The close bond between the cast members, including Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, is a key factor in making a potential season three work. Kidman explained, “I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different,” she said. “But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness, and you want to spend time together.”
Big Little Lies, which premiered in 2017, is based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling novel. Created and written by producer David E. Kelley, the first season garnered critical acclaim and won eight Emmy Awards, including Best Limited Series.
