Boss Demanded He Hurry To The Office, He Still Got There Late… And For Nothing

If you’ve ever worked in tech, you know that “urgent” doesn’t always mean urgent. One developer recently found himself racing through the city after his boss demanded he get to the office ASAP for a last-minute fix only to learn that the supposed emergency presentation wasn’t until hours later.

The story, which spread quickly across Reddit, is a masterclass in corporate panic, misplaced priorities, and how poor communication can turn a ten-minute walk into a half-hour ride straight into irony.

A stressed developer rushes to the office on a company-paid ride after being told a CEO needs urgent changes

'Don't walk to work, we need you here ASAP?'

Today I was on my way to work, I was getting off the subway station still 10 min.

Walk away from work (the office in a very conflictive part of the city, traffic wise)

when I started receiving a lot of Slack notifications (that even if you are "away"

the person sending the message can force a notification push).

$TL (Tech Leader): Hey, the CEO needs a change on the platform because of the presentation she has today.

$PD (Me, poor developer): What change? When does she needs it?

$TL: A couple of style changes, but one of them an endpoint has to be modified.

You are the only one with access to both repositories and that can push to master.

She needs it ASAP, how far away are you?

$PD: I am 10 min. Walk away. The change shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. At what time is the presentation?

$TL: No, she needs you here now. She said that you should ask for a $RideSharingService with the company account. Five minutes later...

$TL: Where you at?

$PD: Waiting for the car, it's still about 5 minutes away. And it says it takes around 15 min. to get to the office.

$TL: Ok. Got to the office about 25 min. Later due to the traffic.

CEO visually pissed. Started up the computer, made the fixes in about 15 -20 min.,

and then they told me that the presentation was still 5 - 6 hours away.

Edit: Line breaks, was using my phone when I posted it.

Workplace urgency often leads to knee-jerk decisions and this story perfectly captures how misplaced priorities can waste everyone’s time.

The developer was already on their way to the office when their tech lead began frantically messaging on Slack. The CEO apparently needed an urgent fix to the company platform before a major presentation.

The developer, still ten minutes away on foot, calmly offered to walk and start the update upon arrival, estimating the task would only take fifteen minutes.

But panic overrode logic. The tech lead insisted they take a rideshare using the company account to “get there ASAP.”

Despite explaining that the ride would take longer than walking due to traffic, the lead doubled down. The developer waited five minutes for the car, sat through twenty minutes of gridlock, and finally reached the office nearly half an hour later.

Once there, they completed the changes in under twenty minutes only to learn that the CEO’s presentation wasn’t scheduled for another five to six hours.

Organizational behavior experts often note that “urgency culture” in workplaces where everything feels like an emergency—can lead to poor decision-making and employee burnout.

According to Harvard Business Review, false urgency often stems from fear and lack of planning rather than genuine necessity. This story is a textbook example of how micromanagement and emotional overreaction waste time, money, and morale.

Ironically, if the team had simply let the developer walk, the job would’ve been done in half the time with far less stress and a smaller rideshare bill.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

This group vented about poor management and workplace inefficiency, mocking bosses who panic or create unnecessary urgency

mwagner1385 − I deal with this s__t all the time at my job.

"OMG I NEED YOU TO PURCHASE THIS FOR A PROJECT RIGHT NOW"

Me: No you don't. You're panicking because you suck at managing your project.

MarcoTalin − How does anyone think a 10-minute walk would ever be made faster by any "Ride Sharing Service"?

just_sayian − Today I had to spend probably 15 min talking to my boss about ordering parts.

It boiled down to. Damnit boss type person we need a set s__ew of a kinda odd size that we don't have on hand.

You can order it through grainger and pay $30 to overnight it.

Or you can WALK TO THE HOME DEPOT A BLOCK AWAY AND BUY A 3 PACK FOR $1.35!

But yeah millennials are k__ling businesses.

These commenters joked about corporate chaos and the irony of being rushed only to wait, using humor to capture shared frustration

mattleo − We used to say, "Your patience will help expedite the process, thank you".

Edit: Wow, looks like I really struck a chord with you guys, haha.

It was the most professional way I could think of to tell people to freakin chill. Thanks for the gold anonymous person!

redditfugee − HURRY UP AND WAIT

ObnoxiousOldBastard − and then they told me that the presentation was still 5 - 6 hours away. Because of course it was. sigh

This group discussed work technology, offering advice or humor about Slack, Wi-Fi, and the balance between accessibility and burnout

thekarmabum − Good time to argue to your company your need for a corporate wifi hot spot.

Need me now, let me sit down. You'll also look proactive by doing that.

Even if you get rejected your the guy that at least tried to think ahead.

random_p3opl3 − Moral of the story is don't install slack for work on your personal phone.

Bit of a moot point if they pay for your phone though...

perlandbeer − There is a Scott Adams Dilbert joke in this narrative somewhere.

These users leaned into cynicism, describing absurd corporate culture where overreactions, poor systems, and misplaced priorities define modern workplaces

_UsUrPeR_ − and then they told me that the presentation was still 5 - 6 hours away. God fkn dammit.

I hate that s__t. And then the company went out of business and everyone lost their jobs. Figures!

And then a meteor hit the earth, extinguishing all life around the planet

as a shockwave spread across the surface at the speed of sound. Well golly...

crasstyfartman − I was fired once for finding a $50k mistake by accounting

(for some ridiculous reason they kept their books in EXCEL SPREADSHEETS). I pissed off way too many people

[Reddit User] − I was in the EXACT situation at my last job. I was on the train, about 20 minutes away from work.

I was going to be 10 minutes early. I got a ton of texts from management saying that

I needed to be at work ASAP, and that I needed to get a Lyft to work.

I ended up doing that, and I showed up over 10 minutes late from my original ETA. It was on their dime, so I didn't care.

[Reddit User] − So you're saying that you have a notification service that

your job can force their messages through even if you have it set to away? F__k. That.

CorreiaTech − Slack! We just started using it! Absolutely love it

Would you have taken the walk or the ride? And how do you handle “emergencies” that clearly aren’t?
