Boss Fires Sick Employee After Christmas Shift, Not Knowing Her Own Corporate Secrets Would Be Exposed

She only wanted accountability after being fired unfairly.

She never expected her complaint to expose years of problems hiding behind one manager’s position.

After being forced to work while running a fever on Christmas Eve, she was punished for doing exactly what her boss allowed her to do.

With screenshots proving her side of the story, she contacted corporate and waited.

What happened next changed everything.

Young employee is fired after being forced to work while sick, but her complaint uncovers a manager’s much bigger workplace misconduct

not the actual photo

'AITA for getting my boss fired after she fired me?'

For context, I worked at this job (it's a well known store so I won't name it)

for about 5 months. I did not like my boss at all. She was rude. Hateful. And

she was openly having an affair on her husband who was the nicest guy.

Well it was Christmas Eve and I was running a fever, throwing up, and

extremely dizzy. I messaged my boss and told her. Her response? "Well no

one is going to cover you, so you need to come in" so I told her "fine. But I

will ONLY be ringing customers up. Not stocking. Not cleaning. Nothing

else" she told me that was fine.. I get to work and that's exactly what I did.

Only checked out customers.

Well fast forward to the 28th of December, 4 days later. I was off those

days, so this was my first day back. She told me to clock in and come to her

office. We sat down and she proceeded to fire me for getting nothing done

Christmas Eve and just standing around, or sitting down in the break room

(don't know why she had me clock in, if she was just going to fire me). Then

I mentioned the messages where she agreed to that. She acted like she had

no idea what I was talking about.

So I signed the termination papers and walked out. The next day, I called

corporate. I told them everything that happened. The fact she made me

work with a fever. How she agreed to me just helping customers. All of

that. I had text message proof.. I emailed them the screenshots, and I didn't

hear anything else.. One of my old coworkers reached out to me and told

me what happened with my corporate call.

Apparently, they started digging on her history with the company and she

has wrongfully terminated people in the past. I wasn't the first one. But

that's not all... They found out she was sleeping with the district manager!

That's why she got away with as much as she did.

So they gave her two options. She could either resign and never work for

the company again or she had to transfer to the other side of the state

(different district). She chose the 2nd option.

Well her husband found out about her affairs and divorced her. I don't

usually cheer when a family gets broken up but him and their kids definitely

deserved better (he got full custody).. So AITA for getting my boss fired after she fired me?

Edit: so I keep having people ask if I was offered my job back. I was not. I

wasn't too upset though cause I was looking for another job, and ended up

getting one a few days later.

People also asked if I brought it to the labor board, I did not. This was years

ago and I was young and dumb. I was 18 (26 now) and didn't really think

about doing so. I definitely wish I would've.

Edit 2: wow I did NOT expect this to blow up, thank you everyone. Just to

clear up, yes she technically wasn't fired then but I did find out she didn't

last long at the new store (since she couldn't seduce her way with that

district manager) so it did EVENTUALLY lead to her being fired

Many people know the uncomfortable feeling of being powerless at work: a manager has authority, and employees often feel they have to tolerate unfair treatment just to keep their jobs.

When someone finally pushes back, the question becomes complicated  are they causing trouble, or are they simply protecting themselves from a workplace that already crossed a line?

In OP’s situation, the conflict was never just about being fired. It was about feeling punished for something she had clearly communicated beforehand.

She was sick, struggling with a fever and other symptoms, yet her manager insisted she come in because there was no one available to cover her shift.

OP tried to compromise by agreeing to help customers but not taking on additional physical tasks.

When her manager later fired her for doing exactly what they had agreed on, it created a deeper sense of betrayal.

What makes the situation interesting is that OP was not initially trying to destroy her manager’s career.

She was looking for accountability. She contacted corporate because she believed she had been treated unfairly and had evidence supporting her side.

The larger consequences happened because the company investigated a pattern of behavior that reportedly existed before her complaint.

Some people might view workplace complaints as revenge, especially when the outcome affects someone’s career.

However, there is another perspective: employees often remain silent because they fear retaliation, allowing unhealthy workplace cultures to continue.

Reporting misconduct can sometimes reveal problems that affect many people, not just one individual.

This perspective helps explain why OP’s decision mattered beyond her own termination.

Her complaint gave the company information they may not have discovered otherwise.

If the investigation found repeated wrongful terminations or misuse of authority, addressing those issues was ultimately the company’s responsibility.

At the same time, workplace conflicts can become emotionally complicated.

Losing a job can feel personal, and it is natural for someone who was hurt to feel satisfaction when consequences finally happen.

But the focus remains important: OP did not create the consequences; she reported an experience and provided evidence.

The organization decided how to respond.

The larger lesson is that employees should not feel obligated to accept unfair treatment simply because someone has a managerial title.

A workplace should be built on trust, respect, and accountability.

Speaking up when boundaries are crossed is not about revenge, it is about ensuring that the same behavior does not continue harming others.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These commenters questioned why the company did not reinstate OP or provide stronger compensation after the wrongful termination

Obvious-Block6979 − So what did the company do to make up for the wrongful termination?

Canadian-gal1733 − Hell no, NTA at all! That was some sweet, petty

revenge! She is now living with the consequences of her actions. And

honestly, it’s really not even petty. You were wrongfully dismissed! So, you

had every right to file a complaint against her. Did corporate offer you your

job back? Because that’s what should have happened.

You can actually sue them for wrongful dismissal, which would force them

to pay you lost wages, and possibly even your court costs. If they didn’t

make it right, then you should definitely look into a wrongful dismissal suit.

mamakitti2011 − NTA, but you definitely should have gotten your job back

AvBanoth − You done good, but you only got her transferred, not fired like you promised. She needed firing.

These commenters supported OP’s actions, saying the manager abused her authority and that exposing her behavior protected other employees

Slow-Cherry9128 − Take satisfaction in that your boss was investigated and

punished. You did the right thing. She was abusing her position and you weren't the only victim.

0fluffythe0ferocious − She made you work while sick, putting you and

others at risk and then fired you because you didn't pretend that you're a robot. NTA

guest87654 − NTA - you saved the rest of the employees

These commenters celebrated OP’s revenge and believed the manager deserved the outcome after mistreating employees

DueCamera730 − Hahaha Well done!

vrcraftauthor − NTA this is great! She had it coming.

These commenters speculated about the company involved based on clues from the story

Kallascat-Dingo-Bat − I bet the store rhymes with "hall fart"...

Aromatic_Potential94 − This has Blue vest and smiley face company written all over it.

After being forced to work while sick, OP thought she had reached an agreement with her manager: help customers only and avoid other duties while she recovered.

Instead, days later, the manager fired her for following those exact instructions.

But OP had proof, and her complaint uncovered a much bigger pattern of questionable behavior, including previous wrongful terminations and a conflict of interest at the management level.

Do you think OP was wrong for reporting her boss, or was she simply holding someone accountable after being treated unfairly? Would you have fought back or just moved on? Share your thoughts below!
