Boyfriend Criticizes Her Body And Food Choices, But She Realizes The Real Problem Isn’t Her Weight

Love and attraction are important in a relationship, but so are respect and emotional safety. When one partner starts controlling the other’s choices, even small everyday moments can become exhausting.

The poster is only 18 and has been dating her boyfriend for over a year. She says he has always been open about preferring very thin bodies, but his comments have gone beyond personal preference.

He now criticizes her meals, encourages extreme fasting, and makes her feel uncomfortable eating around him. Although she still cares about him deeply, she is starting to realize how much his behavior has affected her confidence.

'How do i (18f) make my boyfriend (20m) stop micromanaging my food and being so obsessed with what I eat/my weight?'

We've been dating for around 1 year and 3 months,

and since the beginning hes made it clear that he only likes skinny bodies and everything else is a deal breaker.

Ever since he expressed dissatisfaction with my weight,

I went to the gym around 4 times a week and maintained a calorie deficit but hes still discontent with my stomach

A few examples: last night he grabbed my stomach fat and said "no good" and I asked what he wanted, he said for me to eat "less cals"

Today, me, him, and his family went to Costco during a road trip.

I got a hotdog and frozen mocha thing, he got pretty pissed and moody and said thats too much calories.

He said he wouldnt mind me eating a hotdog if I was skinnier.

He encourages me to fast for a really long amount of time for like 2 days, I always feel like im walking on eggshells whenever I even eat anything around...

For context, im 5'6 and 122 pounds, all of my body is skinny except for my stomach

which protrudes and has a higher fat percentage than the rest of my body and it does bulge a lot when I sit down.

Hes also extremely skinny and only eats like one meal a day, which is usually a vegetable dish or fast food of some kind

Edit: reading all of these comments is making me pretty overwhelemd and light-headed, I feel really stupid for staying with him as long as ive been,

the reason I am is that I invested so much of my time and energy (I know its a fallacy to avoid) and we were both our first for everything,

I feel like if id leave i wouldnt find as strong of a connection as I have with him.

But I need to collect my thoughts especially since im currently stuck with him and states away from my home

A relationship should make people feel accepted and safe, not like they are constantly being evaluated against an impossible standard. While many couples support each other’s health goals, there is a significant difference between encouragement and control. The way someone talks about your body can deeply affect how you see yourself.

In this situation, the OP’s struggle is not simply about weight or nutrition. The deeper issue is that her boyfriend has made his affection feel conditional on meeting a specific physical standard.

Instead of feeling supported, she describes feeling anxious around food, worried about his reactions, and pressured to change despite already putting effort into her health. The comments about her stomach, criticism over normal meals, and encouragement to fast suggest that the relationship dynamic has shifted from partnership into monitoring and judgment.

A different perspective is that her boyfriend may believe he is motivating her or helping her achieve a goal, especially if he has his own restrictive eating habits and strong beliefs about body image.

Some people become so focused on fitness or appearance that they lose sight of how their words affect others. However, caring about health does not require criticizing someone’s body or controlling their choices. A partner can share concerns without making the other person feel ashamed.

Psychologist Ellen Hendriksen has written about self-esteem, anxiety, and the importance of developing a healthier relationship with oneself. She emphasizes that people who experience constant criticism or external judgment can begin to rely heavily on another person’s approval, which can weaken their confidence and sense of independence.

This perspective helps explain why the OP feels overwhelmed and conflicted. She is not only questioning his comments; she is also grieving the idea that leaving might mean losing a connection that felt unique.

First relationships can feel especially powerful because they contain many important memories and milestones. However, a strong emotional history does not automatically mean a relationship is healthy.

The most important question is not whether her boyfriend prefers a certain body type. Everyone has personal preferences. The question is whether he respects OP as a complete person even when she does not match his ideal. A loving partner should not make someone afraid to eat, ashamed of their body, or constantly worried about being “good enough.”

OP is also in a vulnerable situation because she mentioned being away from home and feeling stuck. Before making major decisions, focusing on practical support may help: reconnecting with trusted friends or family, making sure she has transportation and a place she can stay if needed, and giving herself space to think without pressure.

A healthy relationship should leave room for both people to grow. Fitness goals, appearance, and lifestyle choices can change over time, but respect should remain constant. Someone who loves you should want you to feel confident and cared for—not afraid of your own reflection or your next meal.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters urged OP to leave the relationship due to harmful behavior

Sturgeon_Swimulator − You break up. This man is disgusting.

WorldlyMix2967 − Girl, get out now. This is just the beginning. He wants someone with an ED. It doesn’t need to be you.

A_TenISee_transplant − Break up with him, you are a perfectly healthy weight

Cheese_Dinosaur − As soon as I read the title I didn’t need to read any further.

Your weight is not his business. You need to break up with him; sweetheart, this is how it starts, trust me…

succulescence − You break up with him. That is unacceptable behaviour. He is trying to bully you into an eating disorder.

These users described the boyfriend’s actions as abusive and controlling

AKlife420 − You make him stop by dumping him. Stop letting him control you because this is a form of abuse.

heartinspace − This is abuse.

Ok_Channel_6138 − Please run from this man . He sounds very manipulative.

You are so young and have so much life to live still And the last thing you need is a guy treating you like s__t.

ivydragons − I'm 5'5 and 120 pounds, and people think I'm slightly underweight - your belly bulging slightly is just your anatomy, that's how it works.

If you drink or eat at all it fills up, you'll normally only see that flatness when you wake up/ haven't eaten anything.

You will never meet his standards, he will always be pushing the goalposts.

I need you to understand that you inherently will not be able to remove your stomach anatomy unless you become genuinely emaciated.

Your boyfriend is both unintelligent, and abusive.

Voleuse − What the f__k
