Boyfriend Demands She Skip an Italy Wedding, Then Dumps Her When She Refuses

in Social Issues

Weddings often require careful planning, especially when travel, custody schedules, and child-free rules are involved.

A last-minute change can quickly turn an exciting trip into a painful test of priorities and compromise.

The original poster (OP) had been saving for months to attend a friend’s wedding in Italy with her longtime boyfriend.

Their plans were disrupted when his ex refused to switch custody weeks, leaving him responsible for his young daughter during the event.

His proposed solution was to skip the wedding entirely, while his ex suggested joining the trip at the couple’s expense to provide childcare.

OP decided she still wanted to attend alone, but her boyfriend believed that would make him look bad and accused her of abandoning the relationship.

Read on to see how the disagreement escalated.

not the actual photo

'My partner’s ex is causing so much drama?'Not my wedding but wedding related dramaMy boyfriend (M, 39) and I (F, 26) have been dating for 5 years. He has a 7

year old daughter. My friend is getting married in Italy this June, and we’re

invited. It’s a child-free wedding. I’ve been saving up and counting down

the days for this trip.

But last night, he told me his ex suddenly changed her mind and won’t

switch custody weeks with him, meaning he’ll have his daughter during the

wedding. I asked why, and he said she just changed her mind. Then she

suggested that we pay for her and their daughter’s tickets and

accommodations so she can come along and watch their daughter while we

enjoy the wedding. I was upset. That makes no sense. Just switch the

weeks and it’s all good. I don’t want his ex to go on a vacation with us.

My boyfriend’s solution? Skip the wedding. I told him no. First, the RSVP

date has already passed. Second, I really want to go to this wedding and

visit Italy. So, I’m going.

He says it makes him uncomfortable if I go alone because it looks bad for

me to show up solo. I told him if it bothers him that much, then maybe he

should figure something out with his ex so he can come too. He says he’s

tried everything, but she won’t budge, and he doesn’t want to feel like he’s

abandoning his kid.. I’m frustrated. What should I do at this point?

Update : He just ended with me. He got very angry when I told him I’m

going. He said I’m an immature selfish little c** who doesn’t care about him

or his daughter. He broke up with me. I’m so upset and have a bad

headache . I have been crying since then . I’ll reply more later

Sometimes a breakup reveals that the argument was never really about the trip.

It was about whether both people were allowed to have independent plans, whether one partner’s responsibilities automatically became the other’s sacrifices, and how disagreement would be handled when compromise was inconvenient.

OP’s boyfriend had a legitimate obligation to care for his daughter during his assigned custody time.

Choosing not to abandon that responsibility was appropriate.

However, OP was not responsible for resolving the scheduling conflict between him and his ex.

She had saved for the trip, committed to her friend’s wedding, and was fully capable of attending alone.

His inability to go did not create an obligation for her to cancel as well.

The ex’s proposal was also difficult to justify.

Asking the couple to finance international travel and accommodation so she could supervise her own daughter was far more complicated and expensive than exchanging custody weeks.

There may have been information OP did not know about why the ex refused, but her boyfriend’s frustration should have been directed toward finding a workable childcare arrangement, not toward restricting OP’s choices.

His statement that attending alone would “look bad” is especially revealing.

Couples routinely attend weddings separately because of work, parenting, illness, or scheduling conflicts.

The people at the wedding would likely care far less than he imagined.

His discomfort appears to have become an expectation that OP prove loyalty by giving up something important simply because he could not participate.

That distinction matters because OP did not demand that he neglect his daughter.

She merely declined to neglect her own friendship and long-planned experience.

His response: anger, misogynistic insults, and abruptly ending a five-year relationship, was wildly disproportionate.

OP is understandably devastated.

She may be grieving both the relationship and the future she expected after five years together.

Yet the breakup also exposed how he reacts when she makes a decision he cannot control.

She should still attend the wedding, surrounded by people who are happy to see her.

The trip may initially carry sadness, but canceling it will not restore the relationship or make his behavior acceptable.

A partner can be a devoted father without demanding that his girlfriend shrink her life whenever parenting plans change.

The problem was never that OP chose Italy over his daughter.

She chose not to abandon herself simply because he could not accompany her.

See what others had to share with OP:

These commenters said OP should attend the wedding alone while her boyfriend handles his parenting responsibilities

Vegoia2 − Go alone, he's nutz to even consider taking his ex.

Ok_Quantity_4134 − She is trying to scam a free holiday. No reason you

can't go by yourself and your boyfriend stay home to look after his

daughter. I can't see why it would look bad for you to go solo, for one most

people won't care, and the rest they'll understand that he had parental

responsibilities.

Galactic-Girleen − It’s really simple. Go without him. If he feels bad, that’s

for him to deal with. He could always try arrange that his daughter stays

with his family if that’s an option- for example, summer vacation with the

grandparents. Or bring her with you and arrange for a child minder- but

that’s a whole other can of worms.

Even entertaining the idea of bringing his ex and family is just wild.

These commenters warned OP against wasting her twenties managing an older man’s relationship and custody problems

ItJustWontDo242 − Quit wasting your 20s on a middle aged dude with

baby mama drama. Go to the wedding alone and enjoy yourself and stop

letting him control your life.

AdmirableMemory860 − Take this from a nearly-40-year-old woman: Stop

wasting your 20s on a crusty middle aged dude with baby mama drama.

Why do you need this in your life? There's a reason why a 34 year old man

gets together with a 21 year old woman. I know this because I've been

there.

I think many of us have - that's why you see so many older women warning

you against this. We're speaking from experience. Go and enjoy the

wedding. Do not stay home because he thinks it'll look bad. Don't miss out

on your life and youth for this old man and his problems.

madblackscientist − Ohhh you’re the younger girl he traded his older model

for. lol. You’re too young to be dealing with this s__t. A 34 man with a 2

year old and “divorced” goes and finds himself a nice 21 year old. You don’t

have an ex problem. You have a boyfriend problem.

These commenters viewed the large age gap and controlling behavior as significant relationship red flags

anothertimesometime − I really don’t want to be the first one to do this:

I’m side eyeing those ages. He was 35 and you were 21 when you started

dating. That’s a huge age gap when it comes to life experiences. You’re an

adult, I’m not questioning that at all nor doubting your ability to make

good decisions. Because clearly you’re questioning his logic here.

Which you should be! This seems really controlling for him to say “no, you

shouldn’t go because of optics”. And then for the only solution to be to pay

for his ex? !? Ha! Absolutely not! Girl, go to the wedding in Italy and tell him

you’ll send pictures. He’s welcome to join you if he can figure things out.

Are you the main caretaker of his daughter when she’s with him?

GrowFlowersNotWeeds − The first red flag is your age difference. The

second red flag is his ex ‘suddenly’ deciding not to switch custody weeks.

The third red flag is him suggesting that the two of you pay for his

daughter and his ex to accompany you to the wedding. The fourth red flag

is him saying he’s uncomfortable about you going to the wedding alone.

The fifth red flag is him telling you to skip the wedding. And this is just one

little situation in your whole life that you have shared here. How many

more red flags do you need?

These commenters suspected the boyfriend opposed OP traveling alone because he felt jealous or wanted to control her

LynJo1204 − What he's really uncomfortable with is you being solo at the

wedding and potentially getting hit on by single men. He's 39, he needs to

grow up. Go to the wedding and have a good time. And have an amazing

time in Italy.

kratzicorn − If there’s no other option, go alone. It sucks that she won’t

switch custody weeks, but she also is not obligated to. It’s wild of her to

even suggest that you pay for her to go along…but it’s clear she’s refusing

to switch weeks to try and get a free trip to Italy. Regardless, relying on her

isn’t an option.

So you need to tell him he either arranges alternative child care or you’ll

see him when you get back. You should absolutely not miss this wedding

because of this. He feels uncomfortable because it looks bad? That gave

me the ick. Go have fun.

writierthanyou − Your partner's controlling ways are the problem. His ex

may be a mess, but there's no reason you can't go alone. Tell him you're

going, end of discussion. If he continues going on about it, well, that's

more proof you need to open your eyes about how much you end up giving

up to make him happy at your expense.

He'd probably be thrilled to have you hurt this friendship so he can further

isolate you.

OP had been looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime trip, only for a custody issue to suddenly put everything in question.

While her boyfriend’s concern for his daughter is understandable, the solution of asking OP to give up the wedding entirely or accept an uncomfortable arrangement with his ex created a much bigger conflict.

The breakup also revealed deeper issues about communication and respect.

Do you think OP was wrong for going alone, or should her boyfriend have found another way to handle custody? Share your thoughts below!
