Bride Refuses To Let Flower Girl Wear Flashing Glasses, And Her Sister Gets Upset

A bride-to-be is questioning whether she was wrong for setting a simple boundary with her young flower girl.

This Redditor says her 6-year-old niece will be the flower girl at her upcoming wedding and has been excitedly helping with preparations.

The niece became attached to a pair of heart-shaped light-up sunglasses meant for the reception and wanted to wear them while walking down the aisle and during photos.

The bride explained that the sunglasses would be available later during the party, but her niece kept pushing back. When the child’s mother said the girl might not want to participate as flower girl without the sunglasses, the bride wondered if she was being unreasonable.

'AITA for telling my niece that she can't have the sunglasses until later?'

I (27F) am getting married soon. My niece "Maddie" (6F) will be our flower girl.

My partner and I babysit Maddie regularly, so she's been seeing a lot of the wedding prep and loves to be our "helper" whenever she's here.

One of the things we have for the reception is heart shaped sunglasses that light up.

Maddie is quite fascinated by them, and has been talking about how she's going to be a "cool girl" and wear them "when I throw the flowers".

I told her that she'll have them at the "party part" (reception), but she doesn't need them during the ceremony or the photos.

She keeps arguing with me about it though, and I keep repeating what I said before.

Last night, my SIL sent me a FB message. She told me that I'm hurting Maddie's feelings.

I said that I'm not trying to hurt her feelings, but this is a decision I've made - and she'll still get to wear them later.

SIL said that she "doesn't know if Maddie will want to be the flower girl without them".

AITA for telling my niece that she can't have the sunglasses until later?

Sometimes the smallest disagreements reveal a much bigger question: how do we teach children that disappointment is part of life while still making them feel loved?

Many parents and relatives struggle with this balance because seeing a child upset can feel like a personal failure. However, protecting a child from every frustration may prevent them from learning an important emotional skill.

In this situation, the original poster was not rejecting her niece’s excitement or trying to take away a special moment. She was setting a simple boundary for a wedding ceremony and explaining that the sunglasses would be available later during the celebration.

The niece’s disappointment is understandable because, at six years old, children often attach strong emotions to specific ideas they have imagined. To Maddie, the sunglasses may represent being “cool,” included, and important on a special day.

For OP, the ceremony and photographs are moments where she wants a certain vision, and she believes the reception is the appropriate place for the fun accessory.

Some people may see OP as being overly strict about a child’s small request, but another perspective is that this is actually a lesson in emotional regulation. Adults often forget that children are not only learning facts; they are learning how to handle feelings when reality does not match their expectations.

The conflict may not truly be about sunglasses. It may be about whether Maddie learns that love and belonging remain even when she hears “not yet.” Her mother’s fear that she may refuse to participate suggests that adults around her may be more uncomfortable with her disappointment than Maddie herself.

Child psychologist Dr. Laura Markham, founder of Aha! Parenting, explains that children benefit when adults acknowledge their emotions while still maintaining appropriate limits. She emphasizes that validating feelings does not mean giving children everything they want; instead, it helps them feel understood while learning boundaries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics similarly notes that children develop self-control and resilience when caregivers provide consistent expectations alongside warmth and support.

This insight connects strongly to OP’s situation. She did not tell Maddie that she could never wear the sunglasses. She created a timeline and kept the promise that the child would still have the exciting moment later.

By calmly repeating the boundary, OP was showing that disappointment does not mean rejection. The bigger concern may be whether the adults allow Maddie to experience a small frustration without turning it into a crisis.

A healthy approach would be for OP and her SIL to reassure Maddie that she is still a valued flower girl and that the sunglasses are waiting for the celebration afterward. Children can handle “not yet” when they feel secure.

A wedding is an important day for the couple, but it can also become a positive lesson for a child: sometimes we follow a plan, sometimes we wait, and both things can happen while we are still loved.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These commenters advised OP to stand firm and tell the SIL to choose whether her daughter will participate

A-Argent − Hmm. That sounds like a SIL issue re: not sure if the kid will want to be a flower girl without them.

If you're petty, write back and explain once again that she can wear them later, and if Maddie still doesn't want to be flower girl, you accept that, you'll find...

My guess is she would back down pretty quickly.

BeachinLife1 − Call her bluff immediately. "Ok, if she doesn't want to be the flower girl, I need to know within 48 hours so I can replace her.

If she wants to be the flower girl, she will not be wearing flashing light-up glasses during my wedding. This is not negotiable. It's a wedding, not a circus.

Please let me know her decision as soon as possible." NTA, and if I were you,

I wouldn't even wait for her 'decision,' I would make it for her. You don't need a spoiled brat at your wedding.

Emotional_Fan_7011 − NTA. Tell SIL if that is how they feel, you will find another flower girl. Call your SILs bluff.

She is likely tired of hearing her child whine about it, and instead of using this as a teaching moment is trying to manipulate you.

Parenting is hard, but you have to teach the kids!

These Redditors criticized the SIL’s parenting approach and believed the child needed to learn boundaries

manatee_lover143 − NTA. Sounds like your SIL is being a permissive parent.

This could be a good teaching moment for her daughter to learn patience and learn how to take the answer no, a life skill that needs to be developed

and the earlier it’s developed the better for her adult life.   Also it’s your wedding. You make the rules!

Quiet_Compote4651 − Your sister is creating a spoiled brat.

gemmoon87 − Nta sil needs to teach her daughter that she not entitled have her way 🙄.

This group agreed that the wedding rules belonged to OP and the flower girl should respect them

United_Pop_6442 − NTA. That’s fine. If she doesn’t want to be a flower girl without the glasses, she’s not a flower girl.

That’s natural consequences for her. Clearly SIL is used to just giving her whatever she wants.

5PeeBeejay5 − Tell your SIL that you’d hate to have to pick a new flower girl but if that’s THEIR choice (both of them)

you understand NTA it’s your wedding, not your niece’s

Ok-Investment9992 − NTA. Sounds like Maddie is a typical little girl, and mom needs to manage/direct her expectations.

I think you should stick to your plan, and explain that the sunglasses will be her “payment”

for doing her whole flower girl job-throwing flowers and smiling in photos after the ceremony.

It’s be sweet to have the photographer take 1 final sunny photo of you 2 as you give her the glasses for a job well done!

NvrthvrnLights − Don't let a child who you didnt birth dictate your wedding day.

Was saying “wait until later” a reasonable boundary, or should the bride have let the flower girl have her dream moment from the start? Share your thoughts below!
