Bride Says “Black Tie,” Then Tells Guest She Must Wear Pastel Or Stay Home

Wedding dress codes are meant to give guests clear guidance, but problems arise when the written invitation says one thing and the couple privately expects something completely different. One college student found herself caught in exactly that situation.

The 20-year-old OP was invited to an acquaintance’s wedding with a long guest list. The invitation specified black tie, so she spent money she could barely spare on a simple black dress. Wanting to make sure she had followed the rules, she contacted the bride directly.

The bride then told her that women were actually expected to wear pastel colors because some men from the groom’s side might otherwise show up in casual clothing.

When OP explained that she did not own anything suitable and could not justify buying another outfit, the bride told her not to attend unless she purchased one. OP politely declined the invitation, but later heard rumors that several of the groom’s female friends were being uninvited as well.

A college student declines a wedding invitation after the bride unexpectedly demands pastel attire instead of black tie

'AITAH for turning down a wedding invitation due to the dress code?'

I(20 f) got invited to an acquaintance's wedding. We aren't close by any means. And we aren't related.

But it's a wedding with a long guest list, so I wasn't really surprised to be invited.

On the card, it said that the wedding was a black tie ceremony.

So I bought a simple black dress specifically for the wedding, nothing extravagant, but I'm a broke college student, and existing is a strain on my wallet.

But just to make sure, I sent a dm to the bride and asked if the dress was okay.

And she said that it's not. I should wear something pastel. The black tie thing was mentioned on the invite

because apparently some guys on the groom's side wanted to show up in flip-flops because they would have to travel a lot to show up to the wedding.

The bride wanted the pictures to look nice. I then told her that I didn't really have anything good in pastel because I moved and left behind a lot of...

She told me that I should not show up unless I buy something in pastel to fit the actual dress code. Rude but okay. I didn't want the hassle of...

So,I politely told her then that I probably can't make it to the wedding. And that was the end of that conversation.

Today, I heard a rumour that the couple broke up because the bride was uninviting all of the groom's female friends for one reason or another.

I don't really know what happened behind the scenes. But there must have been some drama.

So, I told my friend about the dress thing and she thinks the bride is in the right.

She had a dress code, and none of us were following it, so the female friends/acquaintances of the groom are the a hole.

But I don't feel like the a__hole. The invite had black tie written on it. I don't really know. What do you guys think?

Btw the couple is in their early twenties so it would not shock me if they broke up over some petty drama behind the scenes unrelated to the dress code.

Few things are more frustrating than spending money to meet an expectation, only to discover that the expectation was never what you were told.

For a young guest already watching every expense, a wedding invitation can feel straightforward: follow the written dress code, buy what is necessary, and show up respectfully. Problems begin when the rules change after the invitation has been accepted.

That is essentially what happened here. The 20-year-old guest saw “black tie” on the invitation and bought a simple black dress specifically for the occasion. Instead of assuming she was right, she contacted the bride directly to confirm.

The bride then explained that women were actually expected to wear pastel colors because the groom’s male friends might otherwise dress too casually.

When the guest explained that she did not own suitable pastel clothing and could not justify another purchase, she chose to decline rather than create more conflict. The decision was polite, practical, and financially understandable.

There is another interesting perspective, though. The bride may have been trying to create visual consistency rather than deliberately deceive anyone.

Weddings are emotionally significant events, and photographs can carry enormous symbolic importance for couples. She may have believed that guests should accommodate her vision because she was paying for and organizing the celebration. But a private preference becomes much harder to defend when it conflicts with the formal instruction printed on the invitation.

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman has explained that dress codes exist primarily to help guests understand what is appropriate, not to create unnecessary confusion. A host can certainly request a particular style or color palette, but guests need enough information to make reasonable decisions before arriving.

Emily Post similarly distinguishes between established dress-code categories and a host’s additional preferences, emphasizing that guests should receive clear guidance about what is expected.

That distinction matters because “black tie” is not synonymous with “wear pastel.” Black tie communicates a level of formality. It does not ordinarily require women to choose a particular color. If the bride wanted a pastel color palette for aesthetic reasons, that could have been stated explicitly on the invitation.

The guest also handled the situation better than she may realize. She did not show up deliberately ignoring the bride’s request. She did not argue about etiquette. She simply decided that buying another outfit for an acquaintance’s wedding was not worth the expense and politely declined.

The later rumor about the couple is impossible to assess from this story, and it would be unfair to connect their alleged breakup to this interaction without knowing what happened.

The useful lesson is much simpler: hosts can have preferences, but guests make plans based on the information they are given. When the written dress code says one thing and the personal request says another, declining respectfully is a perfectly reasonable option.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters pointed out that the bride appeared to misunderstand the traditional meaning of “black tie,” especially by objecting to a formal black dress

ScarlettsLetters − NTA. She sounds exhausting. Also black tie is evening wear, and pastels are day wear. So she’s also wrong about that in the first place on top of...

Fearless-Side-2333 − Per vogue magazine: For a black-tie wedding, choose a floor-length evening gown in high-quality fabrics like silk, satin, chiffon, or velvet.

You can opt for elegant, deep jewel tones or a classic black dress, styling the look with strappy heels, a sleek clutch, and statement jewelry.

Basically, the bride wanted the opposite of black tie for the ladies.

IMO she wanted a wedding, not a marriage. Groom dodged a bullet there! NTA.

MammaBacon − NTA. Sound like the bride doesn't know what 'black tie' even means. What an idjit.

These users emphasized that an invitation is not an obligation and that guests can decline if the requested dress expectations don’t suit them

FastOpinion2922 − NTA. Why does everyone think a invitation a demand? You can go or not go for whatever reason you want.

GnomieOk4136 − NTA. No, the bride is not in the right. Wanting specific colors is not a dress code.

Irishqltr1 − If the invite didn't specify pastels for the ladies, the color of your dress didn't violate the "black tie" dress code.

If that's what the bride wanted, and didn't specify, then she may have been looking for excuses to block people.

You did the correct thing by declining to attend. NTA.

This commenter suspected the bride was using the dress code as a pretext to exclude some of the groom’s friends

Foodielicious843 − NTA. The bride was looking for an excuse to get rid of some of the groom’s friends and she weaponized the dress code.

The silver lining for you is that now you have the proverbial little black dress for future events you may need to attend.

This user took a broader view, criticizing what they see as excessive wedding expectations and rigid demands placed on guests

TwistedSisters131313 − Honestly, it’s comical reading about weddings today. The entitlement of these brides is just out of control.

You should be happy that people are going to come to your wedding and bring you a gift without dictating what they have to wear dress codes are ridiculous.

Give me a break.

These commenters argued that if specific pastel colors were important, the couple should have stated that clearly on the invitation rather than imposing the requirement afterward

dantemortemalizar − She should have specified pastels for women in the dress code if it was that important. Can you return the black dress?

Similar-Ad-6862 − NTA My brother is getting married later this year. I told him months ago I was wearing navy.

Their invites showed up last week asking for 'spring colours' I don't own anything 'spring colours'.

I DO own the beautiful navy dress I told them I was wearing. I'm not buying another dress for an event that's not that important to me.

NB I'm not in the wedding party and I'm probably not going to be in too many photos.

Would you have bought a second outfit to keep the peace, or declined exactly as she did?

And if a wedding couple wants guests in a specific color palette, should that always be printed clearly before anyone starts shopping?
