Bride Tries To Control Teen’s Hair, Then Runs Crying To Her In-Laws

Family dynamics are complicated, and weddings often intensify those complexities rather than smoothing them over. What is meant to be a joyful milestone can sometimes reveal deeper issues about power, boundaries, and who is expected to sacrifice for whom. In moments like these, even minor details can take on much larger meaning.

That is exactly what happened to a teenage woman preparing for her brother’s wedding. A seemingly small request from her future sister-in-law spiraled into a full-blown family dispute, leaving her questioning whether she was being selfish or simply asserting her autonomy.

With her parents siding against her, she turned to the AITA community for an outside perspective. Scroll down to see how the story developed and what verdict Reddit ultimately reached.

An 18-year-old clashes with her future sister-in-law over her red hair for the wedding

not the actual photo

AITA for refusing my future sister in law's request to dye my hair for my brother's wedding?

My future SIL Liz has turned into a bridezilla and is going to war with everyone over every stupid thing.

My natural color is red. I love my hair. Liz is blonde but she loves to have red hair

and in fact ever since meeting me she's been dying her hair almost exactly my color.

I don't mind, I think it's weird that she does it but I don't have a monopoly over this particular shade of red

and she's free to do with her hair whatever she wants.

Well, she asked me this week that I should dye my hair to a different color

because she wants her hair to be unique in her wedding, she offered to cover all the costs as well.

I just said no because it's my hair, I don't want it changed.

I told my brother and he told me to do whatever I want because it's my hair, he said he'll talk to Liz to get her to back off.

Well, it didn't work because Liz has come to my parents and they've taken her side!

They say it's her special day and we need to be more accommodating,

and it's important for our future relationship that we get along. I believe I am accommodating;

she can do whatever she wants with her own hair! How is my hair any of her business anyway?

My parents tell me that I should be the bigger person.

I don't know why an 18-year-old should be the bigger person compared to the 27-year-old Liz.

They told me I'm making this minor issue into a big problem and I should just do what she wants

because it's her wedding. AITA for not giving in?

The desire to feel unique and special on significant occasions, such as a wedding, is a deeply human sentiment. For many, these moments are opportunities to express individuality and stand out. However, when this desire encroaches upon the autonomy of others, it can lead to conflict and hurt feelings.

In the Reddit story, an 18-year-old woman faces pressure from her future sister-in-law, Liz, to dye her naturally red hair a different color for Liz’s wedding. Liz, who has been dyeing her hair to match the OP’s shade, now wants to be the sole redhead on her special day.

Despite the OP’s polite refusal, Liz escalates the issue, involving the OP’s parents, who side with Liz, urging the OP to acquiesce for the sake of family harmony.

This situation highlights the complexities of boundary-setting within family dynamics. The OP is not merely resisting a cosmetic change; she is asserting her right to personal autonomy and self-expression.

The pressure from both Liz and her own parents places her in a challenging position, where standing up for herself is misconstrued as being uncooperative.

From a psychological perspective, this scenario underscores the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries.

According to Psychology Today, setting boundaries involves being clear and direct in communication, understanding one’s own needs, and recognizing that others’ reactions are not one’s responsibility.

In this case, the OP has clearly communicated her discomfort with changing her hair color, a personal attribute that holds significance for her.

Furthermore, the concept of enmeshment, where personal boundaries are blurred within family relationships, may be at play. Verywell Health explains that enmeshment can lead to individuals feeling responsible for others’ emotions and decisions, often at the expense of their own well-being.

The OP’s parents’ urging her to comply for the sake of family peace reflects this dynamic, where her personal needs are subordinated to others’ desires.

In light of these insights, the OP’s decision to maintain her natural hair color is a commendable act of self-respect and boundary-setting. It serves as a reminder that while compromise is often necessary in relationships, it should not come at the cost of one’s identity and comfort.

For those facing similar situations, it’s essential to reflect on personal values and communicate boundaries assertively yet empathetically. Seeking support from trusted individuals or professionals can also provide guidance and reinforcement. Ultimately, honoring one’s sense of self is crucial for healthy relationships and personal well-being.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These Redditors agreed that asking you to dye your hair is out of bounds and unreasonable

Madame_Corleone420 − Absolutely NTA!!!

Dying your hair + color correction to get back to your natural color + the amount of time

it takes for your natural colored hair to grow out is a pain in the b__t.

Fainora − NTA if she wants to have original hair for her wedding, maybe she should use her natural hair and not yours.

It is absurd, rude and wrong to ask people in your wedding party to change their physical appearance for your wedding.

There is no reason you should damage your hair for one day.

mrslII − NTA She can ask. You said no. Also, WTAF? She's something special. Edit The "Be the better person" is b__lshit.

Every single time. People who say that are trying to manipulate who they say it to.

BeepBlipBlapBloop − NTA - This is way out of bounds.

She can semi-reasonably dictate what you wear and how you style your hair and/or makeup (if you're in the wedding party),

but expecting you to alter your body in any way is completely out of line. Don't get bullied into this.

Cjack66 − Do not, do not, do not, do not do this. It's your hair.

"Her special day" does not entitle her to unreasonable requests of others. Not to mention, it's irrational.

The bride doesn't have to do much to stand out, she's the bride!

This group roasted Liz, saying if she wants to be unique, she should dye her own hair

_Living_deadgirl_ − NTA if she wants unique hair for her wedding, then she can dye hers a different colour.

awyllt − NTA Tell her to dye her hair blue if she wants to be unique.

[Reddit User] − NTA - If this woman wanted unique hair,

she should have picked a different color than the one naturally occurring in her future SIL.

These Reddit users roasted Liz as entitled, jealous, and over-the-top about being ‘special’

[Reddit User] − NTA. Liz is the one who’s decided she won’t be special enough,

despite being the person in the center of the room in the fancy white dress,

if she’s not also the only redhead in the vicinity.

Is she planning to call up every other guest to confirm they also won’t be showing up with the same hair color?

What about the venue staff?

Either she accepts there’s a limit to how far she can extend the princess behavior and your parents quit enabling her,

or there’s no point in trying to preserve a relationship with someone who’s prepared to fly off the handle

because reality won’t conform to their fantasies.

Parsimonycake − Somebody should break it to Liz that her plan will result in eternal self-humiliation.

Every time people see photos from the wedding, they'll remember that she coerced you into dyeing your hair

so that she could have your hair colour. Everyone who ever sees the two of you together will know that she was a freakish bridezilla.

Many readers sympathized with the young woman for holding her ground, while others pointed out that weddings have a way of magnifying small conflicts into lifelong family memories.

Should a bride’s “special day” include the right to dictate someone else’s appearance, or does love mean accepting people as they are? Would you stand firm, compromise, or quietly comply to keep the peace? Drop your thoughts below, this one’s worth unpacking together.
