Brother Bans Special Needs Sibling After Years of Property Damage Finally Cross a Line

Loving a family member does not automatically make every difficult situation easy to tolerate. I think this becomes especially complicated when someone needs additional support, because setting boundaries can leave relatives feeling guilty even when repeated problems begin affecting their homes, finances, and everyday lives.

One 31-year-old Redditor reached his limit after agreeing to watch his older brother, a 40-year-old man with significant cognitive disabilities. The OP says his brother has a history of going through belongings, taking money, creating expensive household problems, and leaving messes behind, while their mother often brushes off his behavior.

During one Saturday visit to the OP’s one-bedroom condo, another incident created a problem that could not simply be cleaned up afterward. His response was to establish a strict new rule about future visits. Scroll down to find out what happened and why he wondered whether his boundary went too far.

A man loves his special needs brother but reaches a breaking point after repeated damage to his home leads him to set firm boundaries

'AITA for banning my special needs brother from my condo?'

I (31 male) have an older brother (40 male) who was born with special needs. His mind is almost of that of a 7 year old.

Now before I go any further, let me just say that I love my brother and I do care for him.

But overtime it what's gotten to the point where he gets away with a lot of mischief. It mostly comes from our mother brushing it off like it's nothing.

Once it started to get more on the financial and that's when me and her had a talk and I said she cannot keep babying him anymore because it's starting...

He knows that there are things that he has to do in his daily life such as going to work and taking his medication, but he never seems to remember...

It's always the things he doesn't need to do. For example, he stays with my mom.

So when she would leave the house or when I would leave the house when I used to live there.

He would rummage through all of our belongings, even my mom's tax information and writing nonsense all over the back of it.

He would even go into my wallet and mess with my credit cards and steal any money because he automatically thought it was his

even though he knows he's not supposed to touch things that don't belong to him.

Over the weekend, my mom got invited out with a few of her friends and their old boss and asked if I could watch him.

I said yes, as I had nothing to do on a Saturday night so she brought him over to my place.

When he's there, he usually just sits and watch his TV but when he's moving, he completely destroys my bathroom and if I give him food,

he'll leave a mess on my table without cleaning it even though he knows he's supposed to do so when he's done.

Things took a turn when he went to the bathroom, thinking nothing of it. I thought it would be another mess I'd have to clean up and I was completely...

He shat in my toilet and backed it up.

I tried using a plunger and even went out to get anything that would unclogged the drain and the beast still remains in my pipes as I type this.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened.

When I used to live at home, I would always be at Menards or Home Depot getting stuff to unclog

the toilet every month because he has this bad habit of choosing when he wants to take a crap.

His record is holding it for 5 days. I'm pretty sure the employees that saw me there all the time think that I was backing up the toilets.

It got to a point where the pipes were so backed up because of his s__t and I mean that literally.

That my mom had to spend thousands of dollars for someone to come and essentially clean it out of the drain system because it got so bad that the toilet,

not only did not flush, but there was water coming into the shower as well as the laundry room.

I am currently waiting for a plumber to come in, which will be on my off day so they can rectify the problem.

I'm technically without a toilet for five days.

So when I get up in the morning to go to the gym, I have to skip using the toilet and just hold it in until I get to the...

As I said at the beginning, I do love my brother but there is a limit.

I told my mom that he backed up my toilet and that he's not allowed to come back to my place anytime soon as

he has shown multiple times that he has no respect for other people's property even after always being told repeatedly.

More especially since he's not paying for it. I told her if she wants me to watch him then I'll come over to her house, but he is not to...

For context, I have a one bedroom one bathroom condo so having a proper toilet is necessary for me. So AITA

Loving someone does not mean accepting every situation without limits. Many families who care for relatives with disabilities experience a difficult balance between compassion and protection.

They want to support their loved one while also maintaining their own safety, finances, and emotional well-being. The hardest decisions often come when affection and exhaustion exist at the same time.

In this situation, the OP was not rejecting his brother because of his disability. He made it clear that he cared about him and had spent years trying to help.

The frustration came from repeated behaviors that affected other people’s belongings, finances, and living spaces, combined with a lack of accountability from their mother. The blocked toilet was not the only problem; it represented years of feeling responsible for consequences that were repeatedly minimized.

The emotional dynamic is complicated because both compassion and boundaries are important. The brother may have cognitive limitations that affect judgment, impulse control, and understanding of consequences.

At the same time, the OP is also a person with a right to have a home where he feels comfortable and where his belongings are protected. Supporting a family member with special needs does not automatically mean every relative must sacrifice their personal space without limits.

A different perspective is that the brother’s actions may not come from intentional disrespect. Someone with the developmental understanding of a young child may not fully process ownership, hygiene expectations, or long-term consequences in the same way an adult would.

However, recognizing that behavior has a reason does not mean ignoring its impact. The responsibility may shift from expecting the brother to simply “know better” toward creating stronger supervision, routines, and support systems that prevent repeated problems.

Experts who study intellectual disabilities often emphasize that challenging behaviors should be understood through support needs rather than only through punishment.

The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research highlights the importance of individualized supports that help people with disabilities participate safely and successfully in daily life while also considering the needs of families and caregivers.

This perspective helps explain why the OP’s boundary is reasonable. He is not saying his brother has no value or should be abandoned. He is recognizing that his condo may not be an appropriate environment without additional support.

A one-bedroom home with one bathroom creates practical limitations, and repeated damage can create financial and emotional strain.

The larger lesson is that caring for a family member does not require losing yourself in the process. Families often need more than love; they need realistic plans, outside support, and clear boundaries.

The most compassionate choice is sometimes not allowing every situation to continue, but finding a safer arrangement where both the person receiving care and the people providing support can maintain dignity and stability.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters agreed that the poster was justified in setting boundaries and protecting their own home

gingerwithspice − NTA - just because he has special needs doesn’t mean you can’t set boundaries. Stick to your guns on this one.

nothingt0say − NTA not at all, its totally ok to be done

learningmorewithage − Not at all TA. Stand firm and keep your sanctum

Realistic-Lake5897 − NTA. You've done nothing wrong.

These Redditors emphasized that the family needs a long-term care plan instead of assuming the sibling will live with the poster

DaniMcGillicuddi − Of course you’re not TA. But your mom needs to consider looking for a group home.

She’s paying him a major disservice by allowing him to behave this way.

You’re part of the glass children population- if you don’t know what that is, look it up.

Overwhelmingly glass children and their parents after the fact all agree that the disabled sibling should go to a group home long before the parents can’t care for them anymore.

That they have a better life in a group home that’s safer and set up for them.

Fun-Yellow-6576 − NTA Please be sure to have a talk with your Mom on what her plans are for

when she’s not able or no longer around to take care of him because YOU won’t have him live with you.

It will be difficult because she probably just expects you to do it.

potato22blue − Nta. You need to have a talk with her about where he is going when she passes away.

It's probably time to start looking at group homes. Make it clear he's not living with you.

CeramicSavage − Nta. Have you talked to your mother about her plans for him when she dies?

These users suggested professional support services, structured programs, or group homes to better meet the brother’s needs

Lokibell − You are NTA. I worked as a special education teacher for 31 years with students that had intellectual disabilities.

He (your brother) isn't trying to hurt anything, he just doesn't have the cognitive reasoning to make better decisions.

And if your mom has allowed this for all these years, he most likely will not change (unless he has specialized therapy like adaptive behavior analysis).

But I do agree that he will need to stay at your mom's if she wants your help. He needs to keep his routine and you need to save your...

If you are in the US, I would recommend looking into him getting an aid through wavered services in your state.

Having someone come in will give your mom a break and that person can possibly help him with his skills.

Also you need to look into where he will live after your mom passes away.

In the US there are group homes he could apply to live in. That's something I always tried to reinforce with parents of my students.

You've got to have a plan for what comes next as parents will likely die before their adult child.

thisgenXer − NTA. However, your brother needs special needs services.

You and your mom really need to have a discussion about getting him long-term care program and independent living for special needs adults.

Your mother will eventually be too old to take care of him, and you may be under equip to address his needs for the long term.

TypicalDamage4780 − Special Needs Adults need to have boundaries just like everyone else!

He needs to be in a structured Special Needs Group Home where he will be retrained to the abilities

that he can accomplish and strict behavioral boundaries can be reinstalled in his knowledge base.

This is not only his fault but those who are now managing his care.

These commenters supported maintaining firm limits while considering practical solutions for the brother’s behavior

Tough-Pear2389 − you can't be his keeper if he's not willing to do the very basics-especially if he doesn't respect your boundaries

SpinachnPotatoes − NTA. It's better for everyone that he stays at his home when your mom needs a babysitter.

Probably easier on her not having to worry about what he is going to destroy at your home and no extra driving for her when going out.

However I would only be taking in my car keys and phone in with me which stay on my person at all time. If it's locked up in the car...

Ocbeach2 − I’m confused you said his mind is as a 7 yr old but he has a job?

Not TA but if he’s special needs and is technically acts as a 7 yr old he needs not to be living with 2 ppl that can’t care or have...

themcp − How is he backing up your toilet? Is he putting stuff in it, or is he just s\*\*ting bricks?

Either way you're NTA for refusing to put up with it in your plumbing, which means not having him in your home.

(I hope that even on this occasion you are planning to give your mother the bill for the plumber,

not just because you shouldn't be paying for it, but to help show her that there's a cost to her choice to keep him at home.)

However, if the problem is the latter, it's probably painful to him too, so it would behoove everyone to put him on stool softeners

he'd stop ruining plumbing, and he'd be a lot more comfortable.

I agree with what others are saying, that he'd probably be happier and healthier in a group home that is actually set up to handle someone like him.

Do you think the brother’s boundary was reasonable, or should family members always make more sacrifices? Share your thoughts below!
