She Reached Out For Career Advice, He Ghosted Her, So She Ghosted Him Right Back When He Begged For A Job

There’s something oddly satisfying about the universe handing out poetic justice without you even trying. One LinkedIn user found themselves on the giving end of that lesson when a former college senior ignored their messages about company culture, only to come crawling back months later when he needed a favor.

This time, the tables turned. The moment he realized she might be hiring, his sudden enthusiasm was almost comical. So she gave him the same energy he once did: none at all.

A user, ghosted on work culture questions by a LinkedIn contact, baits him with a fake job opening during his hunt, then blocks him mid-enthusiasm

not the actual photo

'He ghosted me when I needed info. So I ghosted him when he needed a job?'

Some time ago, I reached out to someone working at a company I was interested in, just to ask about the work culture.

He’d leave me on seen, or respond with one-word, vague replies like “yes” or “okay.” Clearly not interested in helping.

Fast forward a few months, I saw he was now on the job hunt. So I messaged him again with a casual “Hi.”

Predictably, he ignored it. A day later, I followed up with: “I see you’re leaving X company. I might have an opening.”

Boom, instant reply. Full of enthusiasm. Suddenly, he’s writing long messages answering my previous questions and being oh-so-helpful.

So I did the only logical thing. I blocked him. Immediately. This was the most petty thing I did my whole life and it felt great!

OP later edited the post

Edit: Woah! Didn't expect it to blow up!. Few people have made wild assumptions, so I'll just point out some facts

1. He was a senior in my college, we had a hi/hello nod now and then but weren't close enough to exchange conversations.

2. It happened on Linkedin when he posted "I'm open to new opportunities..."

3. He is not unemployed, I'm not so heartless to mock a jobless candidate

4. For people defending him, I understand. But tell me what exactly changed when I texted him the "I might have an opening,"

which made him reply instantly with explanations for my earlier unaddressed queries...?

Humans crave balance in relationships, even brief digital ones. When someone ignores us, the rejection triggers what psychologists call social pain, which activates the same brain regions as physical pain (Eisenberger et al., Science, 2003). That’s why getting ghosted stings so much, it’s not about ego, it’s biology.

Dr. Guy Winch, psychologist and author of Emotional First Aid, notes that ghosting “creates a sense of helplessness because there’s no closure or explanation.” In other words, when people vanish mid-conversation, our brains loop through “what did I do wrong?” scenarios. No wonder petty revenge feels temporarily satisfying; it restores a sense of control.

But there’s another layer here, LinkedIn etiquette and emotional labor. Career expert and sociologist Dr. Ruth Gotian told Forbes that people “often underestimate how exhausting networking requests can be for those already overloaded,” which can lead to short, dismissive replies or silence.

So, both sides have a case. The original poster felt ignored after making an earnest request for insight, while the senior likely saw the DM as an unsolicited effort with no incentive. When the power dynamic flipped, both reverted to self-interest, one for help, the other for revenge. Classic digital karma.

From a social psychology angle, this is a perfect example of reciprocal altruism gone wrong, the expectation that “if I help you now, you’ll help me later.” When that unwritten rule breaks, resentment brews. The satisfaction of blocking him probably came not from cruelty, but from symmetry: she finally controlled the narrative.

Still, as Dr. Winch points out, indulging in small revenges may offer “short-term validation but rarely long-term healing.” So while her act of blocking felt empowering, the real takeaway might be this: in professional spaces, kindness costs nothing, but indifference can cost you your reputation.

Here are the comments of Reddit users:

These users cheered OP’s pettiness, calling it deserved payback and satisfying karma

TroublemakingB − I so admire this level of petty. You are my hero of the day.

BlackestMask − No interest at all until you could do something for him. Reap what you sow, bonehead.

PhoLongQua − Should have kept replying with 1 word answers that are misspelled, like you can't even be bothered to correct your spelling.

Ok-Blackberry9675 − Should have ignored, it stings more than a block because with a block, the message is clear.

By ghosting or leaving on seen, he's gonna be wasting way more energy and time, without a clear closure that you have no intentions of helping

Commenters condemned the post as manipulative and entitled, saying OP went too far

OccasionalGoodTakes − your petty revenge sounds like harassment.

Messaging someone repeatedly even though they do not respond back thoughtfully, stalking their profile to see when they change jobs,

and misleading them with a job offer after they still do not reply. then making a reddit post where you are somehow the victim, it's all not that great.

the initial choice to not respond to your questions was probably justified.

Edit: you can call this petty, but I can think of plenty of better words to describe it, and thats ignoring that this isn't even "revenge"

lth5015 − Some time ago, I reached out to someone working at a company I was interested in, just to ask about the work culture.

Was this a person you already knew? Was it the company's HR person? Or did you just find a random person at the company?

He’d leave me on seen, or respond with one-word, vague replies like “yes” or “okay.”

Clearly not interested in helping. Again, who is this person and why would you expect his help?

A one word response is more than I would give to a stranger's email about my workplace.

I mean, did you even read the story Chat GPT wrote for you before you copied and pasted it here?

SaltyJunk − Who tf expects a reply to cold DMs on LinkedIn or wherever. Weird thing to be offended by.

Then she stalks and baits him just to exact revenge. I will say it's petty though.

OpticLemon − OP is awful and so is anyone supporting this.

They reached out to a random person and didn't like how he responded, so they waited until he was unemployed then reached out to him.

This dude never initiated anything.

The-Dumpster-Fire − Have you considered people might actually help you if you offer to help them first?

Have you considered how absurd it is to expect random people to give you advice when they don’t know you and aren’t getting anything in return?

Have you considered taking joy in making another being’s day worse may hurt you more than anyone else?

MrngGlry − It's definitely petty but there's no justified reason for it. You said yourself you don't really know each other.

He doesn't owe you anything, in fact you literally said, "We weren't close enough to exchange conversations,"

and yet were distraught over him what... not holding a conversation? You're just an entitled a__hole, not some righteous hero.

Edit: The amount of comments calling out your strange behavior lagging

so far behind the ones celebrating is a nice reminder of how this site is and who populates it, bots and sad people.

Would you have blocked him too, or just left him on read forever? Drop your verdict, Team Karma or Team Classy, in the comments below.
