Bus Stop Harasser Followed Her Onboard, So She Gave Him The Creepiest Conversation He’d Ever Heard

Street harassment can turn an ordinary commute into something exhausting and frightening. When someone ignores every boundary and keeps pushing, even the quietest person may eventually reach a breaking point.

A 23-year-old woman spent weeks dealing with a man who regularly bothered her near a McDonald’s beside her bus stop. She tried ignoring him, relied on phone calls with her fiancé for support, and hoped he would eventually leave her alone.

Instead, he escalated things by following her onto the bus. That was when she decided to make the situation uncomfortable for him for once. Scroll down to see how one strange conversation changed her daily commute.

A woman uses a disturbing fictional story to scare off a man who follows her onto a bus

'You want to follow me onto the bus, McDonald’s man? Fine, but you get to hear how insane I am'

I, 23f, was plagued by a guy I call McDonald’s Man for about a month.

He would hang around the McDonald’s right at my bus stop and proposition me, not caring if I said no or not.

If he couldn’t get my attention, he would often bother the people around me to try and get them to join in.

Everyone was naturally uncomfortable with his behavior and just said “no.”

I’m pretty shy and non confrontational, due to a mixture of factors.

As a child I used to be loud, proud, and very able to stand up for myself, but that sadly changed.

So one day, after he’s been harassing me at the bus stop for 30 minutes while I wait, and I’ve been determinedly ignoring him,

he decides that he’s going to follow me onto the bus when it comes. I. See. Red.

Not only has this man made me terrified to take the bus to school, he has been trying to get others to harass me, and now he’s following me?

Alright sir, let me make you really uncomfortable.

I write fanfiction, and I am a deeply traumatized and mentally ill individual, and it comes out in the plots i write.

I’m on the phone with my fiance, 24m, who is well aware of this, and has been being on the phone in an attempt to try and keep me safe.

(We are LD). I start talking, LOUDLY, about one of the fanfiction plots I’m writing, but conveniently “forget” to mention it’s fanfiction.

I confidently say “yea so I’m planning on burying [character] alive for three days, and then digging him up and seeing if he’s still alive!”

This character is an angel, so he can’t die, and it’s more of a religious symbolism thing anyway, but McDonald’s Man doesn’t know that.

He goes white, pulls the stop signal cord, and literally runs off the bus next exit.

He never came back to that McDonald’s and I am once again safe, and also armed with a new tactic for every time someone harasses me.

Fanfiction for the win!!!!

One of the hardest realities about repeated harassment is that it slowly changes the way a person moves through ordinary life. A bus stop becomes something to dread instead of a routine part of the day.

Every familiar trip carries the possibility of another unwanted interaction. In this situation, the OP was not trying to entertain herself or scare a random stranger for fun. She was responding to weeks of unwanted attention that had escalated from persistent harassment to being followed onto a bus.

The emotional conflict is rooted in the loss of safety. The OP describes herself as naturally non-confrontational, yet repeated boundary violations gradually pushed her toward a breaking point. People often imagine that fear produces either calm problem-solving or dramatic confrontation, but in reality it frequently produces creative, improvised responses.

By loudly describing an unsettling fictional plot without explaining it was fanfiction, she shifted the social dynamic. For the first time, the man who had been making her uncomfortable became the uncomfortable one. Whether intentionally or not, she interrupted the confidence that had allowed him to keep pursuing her.

A different perspective is that this story is less about revenge than about reclaiming agency. Harassment often depends on an imbalance of power. The person doing the harassing assumes the other person will remain polite, embarrassed, or too intimidated to respond.

The OP did not threaten him directly or start a physical confrontation. Instead, she used surprise and uncertainty to make herself seem unpredictable.

While that tactic happened to work in this situation, it should not be viewed as a universal solution. Different harassers may react in very different ways, and some could become more dangerous rather than retreat.

Clinical psychologist Judith Herman has written that trauma frequently involves the loss of power and control, while recovery often begins with restoring a sense of personal agency and safety. She explains that people who feel threatened naturally seek ways to regain control over situations that leave them feeling vulnerable.

That perspective helps explain why the OP remembers this encounter so vividly. The fanfiction itself was almost incidental. What mattered psychologically was the moment she stopped feeling like a passive target and experienced herself as someone capable of influencing the situation.

Even so, the real problem was never her response. It was the repeated harassment that made such a response feel necessary in the first place.

The most important lesson is not that everyone should invent bizarre stories to scare off strangers. It is that no one should have to develop creative survival strategies simply to take public transportation.

When harassment becomes persistent or escalates into following someone, prioritizing safety—staying around other people, contacting transit staff or authorities when possible, and letting trusted people know where you are—remains the most reliable approach.

The OP’s quick thinking happened to end the encounter, but the responsibility for the situation always belonged to the person who refused to respect her repeated lack of interest.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These Redditors shared ways to appear unpredictable and scare off unwanted attention

Maleficent_Young_355 − Reminds me of the time a creep sat next to me on the bus

when I was a teenage girl and kept trying to make small talk with me, eventually “warning” me about “mexicans, black guys, and guys with tattoos”

hanging around in the area because they were dangerous for a girl like me,

(I have no idea where he was going with this other than racism, maybe implying he’d protect me or something???)

and I just said “Oh yeah you never know who’s a creep, that’s why I always keep a knife on me! ”

and pulled my big serrated pocket knife out of my purse to show it off. He immediately stopped trying to talk to me after that!

ladyelenawf − I got to see George Takei at DragonCon '13.

He talked about having to cross Central Park at a super late hour and being worried about how safety.

So he decided to do so while reciting Shakespeare really loudly. His reasoning was people don't mess with crazy.

I'm sorry you have been through so much, but great job scaring him off!

Puzzleheaded-Ad7606 − Anytime a man tells me smile,

I take a second to let every single bit of crazy I can muster come into my eyes and smile like I'm auditioning for The Shinning !

These commenters used awkward or disgusting reactions to make creepy men back away

kakosadazutakrava − Asked for a seat next to a dude on a crowded bus, and he said sure.

But then as I sat down, he whispered, “I don’t bite, just nibble softly” and I was so surprised by this unexpected

and wildly inappropriate remark that I laughed suddenly and LOUDLY. I think I scared the creep out of him.

Militantignorance − In a similar situation, a woman I knew said she picked her nose and wiped it on the man's coat.

Don't underestimate the power of the ick!

These users joked that an oddly specific detail may have unsettled the man most

tidymaze − I wonder if the name you gave your character is the same name as McDonald's Man.

That's what shook him so much. Regardless, good for you!

HighTreason25 − That reminds me of that one post where some guy was bothering a girl on the bus for her attention

and he's like "look, you and me are the only ones not on our phones" and she's like "yeah cuz i'm reciting the entire history of the roman empire in...

or something wacky or offputting or like your fanfic plans the point of the post was that

the dude was so looking forward to his "manic pixie dream girl" scenario that he forgot the "manic" part lol

These Redditors related through fandom stories and conversations that sound alarming out of context

SPNCatMama28 − love fanfiction lol it's mostly all I read

eeekthekat − I cannot count the number of strange looks me and my DnD group got at restaurants talking about decapitating

(or something along those lines) someone and forgetting that the people around us have no idea we are discussing a game.

AdmiralGlitterBottom − Good for you! I hope this POS takes the hint.

Have you ever witnessed someone using humor or an unexpected response to end an uncomfortable interaction? Do you think surprising someone is an effective way to defuse situations like this, or is it always safer to rely on more traditional safety strategies? Share your thoughts below.
