Childfree Woman Says She Doesn’t Feel Like An Aunt, Her Mom Strongly Disagrees

Being childfree is one thing. Being expected to treat someone else’s children as a major part of your life is something else entirely. Family relationships can become surprisingly complicated when different expectations collide, especially if one person believes affection should come automatically.

This Redditor has never hidden the fact that she is not particularly interested in children, yet that has suddenly become a source of tension with her mom. What began as a difference in personality has turned into a disagreement over family loyalty, with accusations of being distant and uncaring.

The poster thinks she is simply living according to her own preferences, but her mother strongly disagrees. Read on to find out what happened.

A daughter’s decision to remain childfree unexpectedly became part of a larger conversation about family expectations

'AITA for not being interested in my mom's grandkids?'

I'm a 35F who is childfree by choice. I don't hate kids, but have never particularly been interested in them and don't really enjoy spending time with them.

My mom has been with her partner for over 15 years. His daughter is around my age and has three young children.

Even though my mom and her partner aren't married, my mom considers those kid her grandchildren and they call her Grandma.

I see the kids maybe once or twice a year at holidays or family functions.

I'm always polite and friendly to them, but I don't go out of my way to play with them or build a relationship with them.

I'm also not close at all with my mom's partner's daughter.

My mom recently got mad at me and said it's "not right" that I never ask about the kids or come visit when she's babysitting them.

She said that because they're her grandchildren, I should care about them and take more of an interest in them.

I'll add that I feel like I already know what's going on with them because my mom regularly sends me photos and updates without me asking.

My mom thinks I'm being cold and that I should make more of an effort because they're her family and important to her.

I personally don't think I'm the a__hole in this situation, but curious to hear others' thoughts.

Families are often built on different kinds of love, and one of the biggest sources of conflict is assuming that everyone should express that love in the same way. Some people naturally gravitate toward children, eagerly following every milestone and looking for opportunities to spend time together.

Others care about their relatives without feeling a strong desire to participate in child-centered relationships. Neither response automatically reflects how compassionate or loving someone is. Problems usually arise when affection becomes an expectation instead of a choice.

From a third-person perspective, the OP does not appear to be rejecting the children or treating them unkindly. She sees them at family gatherings, is polite when they interact, and has never suggested they are unwelcome.

Her decision simply reflects a lifelong preference for remaining childfree and a lack of personal interest in building close relationships with children she sees only once or twice a year. The emotional tension comes from her mother’s expectations.

Because these children have become grandchildren in her own life, she assumes they should naturally become important to her daughter as well. Yet emotional closeness does not automatically transfer through family connections, especially when the adults themselves are not particularly close.

A different perspective is that the mother’s disappointment may be less about the children and more about wanting her daughter to participate in something that brings her great joy. Grandparents often experience grandchildren as a central part of their identity, and they naturally hope the people they love will celebrate that part of their lives.

However, there is an important psychological difference between sharing something meaningful and expecting another person to feel the same emotional attachment. The OP already listens to updates and receives photos, even if she does not actively seek them out. That may simply be the most authentic level of involvement she can offer.

Family therapist Dr. Joshua Coleman, author of Rules of Estrangement, has written that healthy adult family relationships depend on respecting differences rather than expecting identical emotional investments.

He notes that adults maintain stronger family bonds when they allow one another to have different interests, lifestyles, and levels of involvement without interpreting those differences as rejection or lack of love. Mutual respect often strengthens relationships more effectively than pressure or guilt.

That perspective helps explain why this disagreement feels so personal to both sides. The mother likely interprets her daughter’s limited interest as indifference toward something deeply meaningful to her.

The OP, meanwhile, sees herself as acting consistently with who she has always been. She is not asking her mother to love the children less; she simply does not want to be expected to share the same enthusiasm. Those are two very different emotional experiences, even though they produce the same conflict.

Strong families are not created by everyone having identical priorities. They are built by allowing each person to contribute in ways that feel genuine. The OP can remain kind, respectful, and supportive of her mother’s happiness without pretending to feel a connection that does not naturally exist.

Likewise, her mother can celebrate her role as a grandmother while recognizing that meaningful family relationships cannot be created through obligation alone.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These Redditors suggested showing interest in the grandchildren because they matter to OP’s mother

ponygalactico − NAH I'm totally on board with you, but also think about treating her grandkids as your mom's hobby.

If you'd normally ask about her mahjong games or about her plants (for example, insert her real hobbies here)

then you can ask about this interest too. If you don't normally ask about her hobbies, then disregard

Quiet_Test_7062 − I think she is telling you should would appreciate your interest because it’s important to her.

And that’s valid. So asking about the grandkids isn’t for you, it’s because it shows you are giving space and attention to what’s in her life.

No_Kangaroo_5883 − NAH because you’re not interested in them.

Yet, caring about what other’s care about is an easy way to build and sustain relationships. You don’t have to care about that however.

I could give two f’s about art. But my sister does so I take an interest in what she’s doing around the arts.

This group said there was no major conflict because OP and the children simply do not share a close bond

kalequinoa − NAH. You’re definitely not under any obligation to become close to your mom’s grandchildren.

Her partner came into your life when you were already an adult, so it’s not surprising that you don’t feel like they’re your family.

But they’re obviously important to your mom, and so are you, and that’s why she wants you and them to be closer.

conchitu − NAH. She’s excited about these kids, you’re not. You’re being polite and so is she, I assume. I don’t see a major conflict here.

tinyd71 − You were basically an adult when your mother met her partner, and you don't have a close relationship with his daughter.

Your mother has chosen to taken on a grandparent role which is lovely. You don't seem to like/want children, which is fine.

It seems understandable that you aren't particularly interested in children who aren't really related to you and you don't often see. NTA

These commenters supported OP’s boundaries and said no one should be forced into a family role they do not feel

Appropriate-Mall9781 − NTA. As long as you're not treating them poorly, you're fine.

Isabella-de-LaCuesta − Nta at all. People who have kids or grandkids usually think we are as excited about them as they are.

And we are not! You have been polite enough, so don't worry.

Yucyon − NTA. If you're not very close with your stepsister, it makes sense that you wouldn't be close with your. ..step-niblings, I suppose.

My guess is that your mother is resentful of the fact that you don't want children.

She probably wants you to interact with them more so that she can imagine her biological daughter being a mom.

Which is, understandable to a degree, but also obnoxious, because you're a full person and no one should make you feel guilty for being childfree.

vocalfry13 − NTA. You don't even have a blood relation to those kids. Neither does your mom.

If she wants to play grandma, sure. But she can't force you to play aunt. Cray that she would even bring it up.

If a loved one embraces new family members later in life, do you think those relationships naturally extend to everyone else or should each person decide for themselves how close they want to be? Share your thoughts below.
