Classmate Who “Couldn’t Stand Him” Quietly Bought Him Lunch, and He Never Forgot It

Small acts of kindness have a strange way of staying with us longer than major events. Sometimes, the person who helps us is not even a close friend. They might be someone we barely know, someone we clash with, or even someone who has made it perfectly clear that they find us difficult to be around.

OP still remembers one classmate from nearly twenty years ago for exactly that reason. Back then, OP often acted out in school, making jokes, interrupting lessons, and attracting plenty of annoyed looks. One girl in particular had little patience for the behavior and never hid it.

Still, beneath all that irritation, she noticed something OP was trying very hard to conceal during a school field trip. What she did next was simple, quiet, and completely unexpected. Years later, OP says the memory still influences how they think about kindness. Scroll down to see why.

A student never forgets when a classmate who disliked him quietly bought him lunch

not the actual photo

'Almost twenty years ago, a classmate who didn't like me bought me food when she noticed I had none and I still think about it sometimes'

When I was in school, I acted out a lot. Blurting out nonsense "funny" answers during class, making dumb jokes, and otherwise being obnoxious.

There was this girl who told me "you're smart, why do you act stupid?" one day in a fit of annoyance with my antics.

She really didn't like me, and I remember her annoyed glares throughout the course of the year pretty well.

Funny thing is, she hit the nail on the head pretty well. I had a broken home growing up so I acted out and said dumb/wacky things to try and...

She'd frequently tell me to shut up during class when I was trying to be "funny" or when I was blurting things out.

Which was frankly pretty understandable, and I'm surprised nobody else did too.

She was what I would have considered 'semi-popular' and 'preppy' at the time,

but super smart and I don't ever remember her being snotty or rude or anything.

One day, we went on a field trip to the local mall and I was absolutely dirt poor at the time.

Everyone was eating lunch in the food court and I was sitting at a table reading a book because I didn't have any money to buy food with.

This girl and a group of her friends came up to me and said "I got this for you"

and set one of those styrofoam containers of teriyaki chicken and rice down onto the table.

Not even sure what I said, if anything. Probably a thanks? I think I was so taken off guard that I froze up a bit, but I'm sure I thanked...

She didn't say anything else, and they left. It was the best food ever - food court teriyaki just hits a little different.

We never interacted again after that, as far as I can remember.

I switched schools every 3-8 months because we'd lose our housing, so I think I just moved away shortly thereafter.

I still think about this interaction sometimes.

Someone who made it abundantly clear that they thoroughly hated me still paid out of her own pockets to help me when I couldn't afford food.

It would have been the easiest thing in the world to just, not even pay attention or care that I was sitting there.

I didn't even make it clear that I was hungry - I mean, I *was* hungry, but I was trying to play it cool and nonchalant so as to not...

That means she must have really gone out of her way to put two and two together.

Remembering all this makes me want to try and channel that energy myself sometimes.

There's some philosophical epiphany to be had here, about small acts of kindness leaving permanent marks on the world.

Or something along those lines.. edit: I added some more context to parts of this

Sometimes the kindness people remember longest is not the kindness they expected to receive. It is the unexpected gesture that arrives when someone feels embarrassed, invisible, or convinced that nobody has noticed what they are going through.

Nearly twenty years later, the OP still remembers a container of teriyaki chicken and rice, not because the meal itself was extraordinary, but because of who noticed his hunger and quietly decided to help.

At school, the OP admits he could be disruptive. His jokes, interruptions, and attention-seeking behavior frustrated a classmate who clearly did not enjoy being around him. With hindsight, he recognizes that much of this behavior came from instability at home and a desire to be noticed.

That context does not erase the irritation he caused, but it makes the emotional picture more complicated. The girl could dislike his behavior while still recognizing that something was wrong when she saw him sitting without lunch. Instead of using his vulnerability against him, she bought him food and walked away without demanding gratitude.

That distinction may be the most meaningful part of the story. Kindness does not always require affection. People often imagine compassion as something reserved for friends, family, or people they naturally like.

Her behavior showed something more mature: she separated her judgment of his actions from her judgment of his worth. She could think, “This person annoys me,” while simultaneously deciding, “He should not sit here hungry.”

Research discussed by the University of California, Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center suggests that people frequently underestimate how strongly recipients value small acts of kindness. Across experiments, those performing kind gestures consistently predicted less positive impact than recipients actually reported.

The American Psychological Association similarly notes that prosocial actions, including helping and generosity, are associated with benefits to well-being and can strengthen social connection.

That helps explain why a relatively inexpensive lunch became a permanent memory. To the classmate, buying an extra meal may have been a brief decision she barely remembered afterward.

For the OP, however, the gesture arrived during poverty, housing instability, and a childhood in which attention often had to be pursued through disruptive behavior. Someone noticed his need without requiring him to perform for that attention.

Perhaps that is also why the memory still influences him. Research on what psychologists call moral elevation suggests that witnessing another person’s goodness can encourage compassion and generosity in the observer. Decades later, he wants to reproduce the same energy for somebody else.

The practical lesson is wonderfully simple: when someone appears to need help, kindness does not require liking them, understanding their entire story, or receiving anything back. Sometimes noticing is enough. A forgotten lunch for one person can become another person’s lifelong reminder of the kind of human being they want to become.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters praised the girl’s kindness and the lasting impact of one thoughtful act

ProZocK_Yetagain − What a cool person that young lady was. I'm glad it had an impact on you :)

lexiebeef − I have no idea why Im so emotional but Im literally sobbing at this story.

So many times we're so focused on ourselves that we dont even notice the other people struggling, or sometimes we just dont care.

I can imagine this girl "acting cool" and pretending that giving you food was just nothing but I know she noticed you and didnt hate you.

She seems like a good person and so do you. Hopefully we can all channel kindness a bit more in our day to days.

Dranask − What a heart warming story and not at all pointless. I'm sure you've paid it forwards already.

carptrap1 − You got the attention that you needed. Kindness.

These Redditors believed she never disliked OP and instead saw their potential.

UrsaMaln22 − Maybe you have other examples, but that first paragraph doesn't say, to me, that she 'didn't like you'.

It says she saw the potential for an intelligent, successful person getting wasted behind 'dumb antics'.

She probably didn't want to hang out with someone who was acting like a fool, but knew that if you got your s__t together, you could be something.

If she really didn't like you, she wouldn't have said that to your face - she'd have said it behind your back. Frankly, I like this girl, and I hope...

Retropiaf − I don't think she hated you. It seems she found your behavior frustrating because she saw that there was more than that to you.

Thank you for sharing this story of kindness.

[Reddit User] − UrsaMain22 already said it and I'll reinforce it. .. I don't think she "didn't like" you. She was basically parenting you.

She probably grew up in a stable home situation with great parenting.

She saw you doing things that her parents would have taught her would lead to bad results.

She would have wondered why and realized you didn't have the solid foundation she had.

And she passed on those lessons she had learned and (when she bought you lunch) her advantages.

I also grew up in a very poor, chaotic home and area and it's thanks to people like your classmate that I got out.

Whenever I can, I help out kids who seem to need a bit of help/guidance.

You said that you have thought about what an impact small acts of kindness can have and I do think it would help you to pursue those thoughts.

Don't feel like you have to start off with something huge.

There are all kinds of ways you can make a difference. Donating a couple of cans of something to the local food bank.

Paying a bus fare when you see someone searching their pockets.

If/when you feel like doing a little more, you could sign up for a big brother/sister scheme where you meet with a kid regularly.

My friend does it and takes her kid to the theater and local art galleries. You probably have your own hobbies to share.

Or you could volunteer for Scouts or some other organization.

I can't quite think of the words I'm looking for here so forgive me if I don't get this quite right...

I get the impression that you may still feel that you're not one of the functional people

and that therefore you're wondering whether you are good enough to become the kind of person who gets involved and gives back. You are.

The way you've described your situation shows a lot of insight and I think you'd be depriving kids of someone who could improve their lives

if you didn't take the next step and figure out a way to contribute. Good luck.

These users said the story was meaningful and captured something deeply human.

JuuliusCaesar69 − This is far from pointless. It’s a story about the essence of exactly what makes us human.

JuuliusCaesar69 − If you have the ability to contact her, you should tell her. She probably doesn’t even remember.

philatio11 − There are two heroes in this story:

1) The girl who could have leveraged her popularity and privilege to bully the poor classmate, earning snark points with her friends on a field trip.

Instead, she was not so self-centered and empathized with another and committed an unsolicited act of kindness.

2) The OP who was trying to play it cool and could have doubled down and done or said something ungrateful

to make it look like they didn't want or need the food. They accepted this act of kindness at face value.

Even better, they persevered through hard times and were not so self-centered that they forgot this act of kindness in the face of much hardship.

Neither one demanded anything in return. I strive to be either one of these people in my everyday life, but often I fall short.

Often, my ego makes me play either the bully or the victim, and neither mask fits me comfortably or well.

Was she simply compassionate, or did she understand his situation better than he realized? What small kindness has stayed with you for years?
