Costco Customer Melts Down Over Food Court Numbers, Then Turns Her Frustration Toward Immigrants

Waiting for food is rarely anyone’s favorite part of a shopping trip, but most people understand that larger orders take longer than a hot dog or a slice of pizza. Apparently, that logic does not work for everyone.

One Costco customer in Canada described watching a woman become increasingly angry because later ticket numbers were being called before hers. Employees repeatedly explained that orders were served when they were ready, not strictly by number, but she refused to accept the system.

The situation was especially ironic because her own order included multiple poutines, sandwiches, and pizza slices, making it one of the more time-consuming meals being prepared.

What began as a complaint about waiting soon became far more uncomfortable when she started dragging other customers into the argument. Scroll down to see how a simple food court delay turned into a public scene.

A Costco customer causes a scene after larger food orders take longer than simpler ones

'Costco entitlement'

Yesterday I was at Costco and got a food court ticket. My number was 611.

For anyone who uses the Costco Canada food court, you probably know that the numbers are not always called in exact order.

Simple orders like hot dogs and pizza slices are ready quickly, while poutines, burgers, and sandwiches take longer.

So the employees call whichever orders are ready.. While I was waiting, they called 599, then 607, then 609. Nobody thought anything of it.

Then this woman suddenly comes up and says, “I am 601. How did you call 607 first? You skipped five numbers!”

The employees tried explaining that they call orders when they are ready, but she just would not accept it.

She kept insisting that they should call the numbers in order.

The ironic part was that her order was huge.

She had ordered around six poutines, several pizza slices, and multiple sandwiches, including Montreal smoked meat sandwiches.

Obviously, an order that large was going to take longer to prepare.

The employees kept telling her to wait for her order, but she continued arguing with them and creating a scene.

She was stomping around and trying to get other customers to agree with her.

Everyone around her seemed to understand how the system worked, but she just kept going.

Then, somehow, her frustration turned toward immigrants.

She started making comments about how “your immigrants” were causing problems in Canada, directing them toward me and others around her..

All of this because her food order was not ready yet.. Meanwhile, the employees were trying to serve everyone else while dealing with her argument.

Eventually, my number was called. I got my pizza slice and hot dog and left while she was still standing there arguing.

Sometimes the smallest inconvenience reveals far more about a person than the inconvenience itself. The woman at the Costco food court was not facing lost money, terrible service, or even a forgotten order. Her large meal simply required more preparation time than several smaller orders placed around the same period.

Yet instead of accepting the explanation, she interpreted other numbers being called first as evidence that she was somehow being treated unfairly.

Her initial frustration is easy enough to understand. Number systems usually suggest a queue, so seeing 607 and 609 served before 601 could briefly feel confusing. Once employees explained that orders were completed according to preparation time, however, the misunderstanding had an obvious answer.

Continuing to argue, stomp around, and recruit other customers transformed ordinary confusion into entitlement. Her expectation appeared to become: because she ordered first, every other customer should wait until several poutines and sandwiches were finished.

Psychologist Bernard Golden, Ph.D., explains that entitlement can intensify anger because people develop expectations about what they believe *should* happen. When reality violates those expectations, they may experience the difference as personal unfairness or disrespect rather than ordinary inconvenience.

Golden notes that people with stronger entitlement tendencies can become especially reactive when circumstances fail to provide the treatment or immediate gratification they believe they deserve.

That helps explain the food argument, but it does not excuse what happened next. The most revealing moment was when frustration over an order suddenly became hostility toward immigrants. At that point, the issue was no longer Costco’s preparation system.

The American Psychological Association defines scapegoating as directing anger, frustration, or aggression toward another person or group and blaming them for one’s problems.

APA reporting on xenophobia has similarly noted that immigrants and minority groups can become convenient targets when people redirect broader frustration toward outsiders.

Counseling psychologist Hsiu-Lan Cheng, Ph.D., has explained how stereotypes that position certain groups as perpetual outsiders can make them easier targets for anger and aggression.

That distinction matters. Being annoyed about waiting for food is ordinary. Turning that annoyance into racialized or anti-immigrant hostility is a choice that harms people who had nothing to do with the delay.

The Costco employees handled the situation appropriately by explaining the system and continuing to serve customers whose orders were ready. Sometimes the healthiest response to unreasonable entitlement is not winning the argument. It is refusing to reorganize everyone else’s day around one person’s anger.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

These Redditors were more upset that Canadian Costco gets poutine than about the rude customer

InsertDiscBee − Imagine being lucky enough to have poutine at Costco and still being angry. In Australia we just get hot dogs and pizza.

Guilty_Comb_79 − You know what pisses me off the most. ..we don't get poutine at the US Costcos, we don't even get fries.

Damn you and your progressive food choices Costco Canada, lol.

Brilliant-Special685 − TIL I need to go to a Canadian Costco. ..poutine? Montreal smoked meat? Yes please.

Throwaways3691 − What I got from this is that Costco Canada has poutines and Costco United States does not, and I’m mad.

These commenters joked about how absurdly entitled some shoppers behave in public

Legitimate-Log-6542 − We need to invent a hand that pops up from the ground and slaps entitled people

AcanthisittaShot4232 − I live in upstate New York State and we just opened our first Costco.

What I am about to share with you you need to take to heart. 50% of all Costco customers have NEVER been in public before

and have NO IDEA HOW TO CONDUCT THEMSELVES. Any visit to Costco is similar to visiting a psychiatric hospital. Enjoy the circus or shop elsewhere.

These commenters felt the customer should have been removed or publicly called out for her behavior

Secure-Corner-2096 − They should have canceled her order and membership and kicked her out of the store.

Fuzzy_Redwood − I would’ve called security over honestly. Booed her loudly as a group.

These racists are far too comfortable being horrible in public. Public shaming is a trend I’m glad to see coming back when it’s truly deserved.

These users pointed out that arguing with staff only slows service and that order numbers are often misunderstood

appleblossom1962 − It’s too bad that she didn’t realize that the longer she kept the employee

due to her arguing the longer her food was going to take because it was one less person working the counter

SasukeCorvine − I work at a Costco and one thing that make this worse, is that the number is not assigned to you when you pay

but when you first start using the self serve till. So the dockets don’t even print for us in order.

Had many angry customers, who insists they get served first because their number is smaller,

and they don’t listen when you try to explain this to them,

even if you try and show them on the receipt that the other person paid first, they won’t listen. It f__king sucks

Was the food court system genuinely confusing, or should the customer have understood immediately that larger orders take longer? Share the verdict below.
