Couple Keeps Inviting Friends to Elaborate Dinners, but Their Guests Barely Talk to Them

Dinner with friends does not need to be perfectly balanced every single time. Someone might cook more often, another person might bring drinks, and sometimes one home simply becomes the usual gathering place. Still, hospitality starts feeling different when the effort consistently travels in only one direction.

OP and their partner have regularly invited a married couple over for homemade dinners and movie nights. The partner often prepares elaborate meals, complete with dessert, yet their guests contribute little beyond showing up.

More troubling to OP is how disconnected they seem once they arrive. Instead of joining conversations, the couple mostly whispers between themselves, and attempts to engage them tend to end quickly.

They have never offered to cover groceries or hosted anything in return, either. OP has reached the point where planning another dinner sounds exhausting, but their partner believes they should accept that “that’s just how they are.” Scroll down to see whether Reddit agreed.

A couple considers ending regular dinner invitations after realizing their friends barely engage and never reciprocate

'WIBTA if I never invited my friends over for dinner again?'

I have two friends who are married. My partner and I have, in the past, had them over pretty regularly for dinner & watch a movie..

My partner often cooks elaborate meals, including a dessert.

Our friends will show up, eat the food, and just…not really talk to us.

We’ll watch the movie and comment on things (we usually watch something over the top or dumb),

and we will try to interact with the married couple, but they barely speak to us. instead, they’re whispering to each other nonstop.

They’re having conversation, which is fine, but it’s off-putting.

And if I try to talk to my friend, she’ll respond in very few words, and then her husband will whisper something to her, and then it’s like oh ok...

They never throw in on groceries to make the dinner, and it’s like they aren’t even interested in the movie they picked or in us at all.

They never invite us for anything, either. I don’t want to invite them over anymore.

My partner is similarly uncomfortable but resigned that “that’s just how they are” and they’re our friends, so we should keep doing it.

Would I be the a__hole if I didn’t plan any more dinners with them?

Few things feel lonelier than making space for people who seem uninterested in being there. Hosting dinner is rarely just about putting food on a table.

Someone shops, cooks, cleans, chooses something everyone might enjoy, and gives up part of their evening because they expect a shared experience in return. When that effort repeatedly meets silence or emotional distance, disappointment is understandable.

In this situation, the OP does not appear upset merely because the married couple whispers during movies. The frustration comes from a larger imbalance. The OP and their partner provide elaborate meals, dessert, entertainment, and invitations, while their guests contribute little financially or socially and apparently never reciprocate by hosting.

Attempts at conversation also seem to disappear quickly into the couple’s private exchanges. After enough evenings like that, hosting can stop feeling generous and start feeling strangely transactional: two people provide dinner while the other two occupy the room.

There is another interpretation worth considering, however. The couple’s behavior does not necessarily mean they dislike their hosts. Some couples become so socially intertwined that they unintentionally operate as a closed unit around other people. Whispering may feel perfectly ordinary to them because their attention naturally returns to each other.

They may even leave believing everyone had a pleasant evening. Intent and impact can coexist: they might mean no disrespect while still making their friends feel excluded.

Psychologist Marisa G. Franco, author of Platonic, explains that healthy friendships depend heavily on mutuality.

In her discussion of friendship for the American Psychological Association, she describes how showing affection, initiating connection, and investing in relationships help friendships develop and endure. She also emphasizes that people often underestimate how positively others respond when someone reaches out.

Research summarized by the Greater Good Science Center similarly highlights reciprocity, responsiveness, and intentional effort as important ingredients in adult friendship.

Seen through that lens, the missing grocery contribution is probably not the real problem. People do not normally calculate friendship by dividing the cost of dessert. What hurts is the accumulation of one-sided effort: one household initiates, prepares, hosts, engages, and repeats, while apparently receiving little comparable investment.

The OP therefore would not be unreasonable for stopping the dinners. More importantly, stopping one tradition does not require dramatically terminating the friendship.

They could simply stop organizing elaborate evenings and see what happens. Perhaps the friends eventually initiate something themselves, or perhaps everyone discovers that occasional coffee, lunch, or another low-effort activity suits this friendship better.

Relationships sometimes reveal their actual shape when one person stops carrying them. If these dinners survive only because the OP continually creates them, allowing that pattern to end may provide more useful information than preparing another elaborate meal ever could.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These commenters agreed the couple seems like poor company and questionable friends

ConflictGullible392 − Yeah they don’t sound like good company. NTA.

Repulsive_Tone_2484 − NTA. They just sound a bit odd a s not good company.

These Redditors questioned whether the friendship is mutual or worth maintaining

GMaryK − INFO: why do you like these people? Why do you ever invite them over? What makes you think that they like you?

ThotsforTaterTots − NTA. Are you sure these people are your friends? Do they actually ever invite you over ?

These users suggested simply stopping invitations and seeing whether the couple even notices

roxinmyhead − I would just stop inviting and see what happens

n0thangchew − NTA - will they even notice?

This Redditor criticized OP for avoiding confrontation with people who clearly seem uninterested

writierthanyou − . ..TF? YTA for being too scared to stop dealing with a couple who clearly don't care about you that much.

Ugh, two non-confrontational people in a relationship, how annoying.

These commenters backed setting house rules and changing the gathering format freely

Main_Wasabi857 − It's your house, Invite, Don't invite, whoever you want whenever you want !

schmappledapple − YWNBTA. You could always say "hey, we can't provide dinner this time, but do you want to have a game night? "

That would encourage them to actually talk to you guys more.

SampsonShrill − If you want conversation, why are you watching a movie?

Would you quietly end the dinner tradition, directly explain the problem, or give them one game night to prove they actually enjoy the friendship?
