Coworker Puts Something In Her Drink As A “Joke,” Then Can’t Understand Why She’s Upset

Workplace jokes can sometimes help people bond, but there is a big difference between a harmless prank and crossing a personal boundary. What one person finds funny can leave someone else feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, or even unsafe.

The original poster (OP) had only been at her job for a few months when a coworker decided to play a prank on her during a busy shift. After taking a drink from her water bottle, she noticed something was wrong and quickly discovered someone had secretly added another substance inside.

While her coworkers laughed it off as a normal joke, she felt completely differently about what happened. Read on to see how she handled the situation and why Reddit strongly reacted.

A new employee discovered her coworker had secretly altered her drink as a workplace prank

'My coworker messed with my water. Am I overreacting?'

So I’m fairly new to my job (I’ve been there for almost 3 months) and one of my coworkers (almost 50 year old man) has for the most part been...

He will make jokes and do small pranks and such but I think today he took it too far.

I normally keep my water bottle with me at all times but today was super busy and I hadn’t taken a drink really all day.

When it finally got slowed down I took a drink of it and it tasted……off.

Now I did just come back from lunch and thought that maybe the flavor of the chips I had was mixing with the water and making it taste weird.

So I got a piece of gum and still the water tasted off and was getting more extreme.

I opened the water bottle and there was basically a white foam fizzing up towards the top of the bottle.

I understandably went “ew what the hell??” And the 50 yr old coworker at first acted like he was also disgusted and didn’t know what it was.

He then started laughing and so did everyone else. I then learned that he had put powdered coffee creamer in my water.

Apparently he’s done this to other people??? And they just act like it’s normal. I was so embarrassed and honestly mad.

I went to our break room to try and clean the water bottle out but there was sludge stuck in the straw.

I was visibly upset when I got back because he kept asking “are you mad, irritated, miffed???”

And I just kept saying “it’s fine” because I felt like if I actually tried to stand up for myself every one of my coworkers would turn on me.

They all seemed to be in on the joke. My manager also saw this prank play out and didn’t seem to be too worried.

I really don’t want to go into work tomorrow because I know I’ll have a hard time pretending that it’s not still bothering me.

Idk if I’m overreacting but I feel like it’s not okay for anyone to mess with someone drink no matter what the intentions are behind the “prank”.

UPDATE: So this got A LOT more attention than I honestly was expecting.

I want to start off by saying thank you to those of you that validated me in thinking it was a hella weird thing to do to someone.

To those of you that were kind of rude….I hope nobody ever puts anything disgusting or dangerous in your drink.

Anyways, I did end up talking to my coworker directly because I felt like it would be better to try and resolve the issue with him first

instead of just going straight to HR and possibly causing a whole dramatic event.

I do understand where a lot of you are coming from with that suggestion tho, so please trust that I am not nor would I ever shame someone for going...

I asked him if we could talk after work and was just honest with him. I explained that I not only have huge issues with certain textures and

such but also that it’s SUPER WEIRD to touch another person’s food or drink.

We talked through some other things and he ended up apologizing. My hope is that this will never happen again and that everything will be chill from now on.

I will however be keeping an eye on my things from now on lol.

I know this might not be the type of update that some of you were hoping for but my need for this job is great

and I just can’t do anything to risk it at the moment. ESPECIALLY in this economy.

Trust is often built through small, everyday expectations: that a coworker will respect your space, that your belongings will remain untouched, and that something as basic as a drink is safe to consume. When someone breaks that expectation, the emotional reaction is not always about the object itself.

It is about the sudden feeling that a normal environment has become unpredictable. In this situation, the OP was not simply upset about a bad-tasting bottle of water. She experienced a moment where a basic boundary was crossed, and the fact that others laughed made her feel isolated rather than supported.

The situation is complicated because workplace humor can look very different depending on the people involved. Some teams develop a culture where teasing and harmless pranks are common, and people who participate may genuinely believe everyone is comfortable with it. However, the important difference between a joke and a violation is consent.

A prank involving someone’s drink changes the dynamic because the person cannot know what was added, whether it is safe, or whether future incidents might happen.

The coworker’s reaction also mattered. Instead of immediately recognizing that the OP was uncomfortable, he focused on whether she was “mad” or “miffed,” which may have made her feel pressured to minimize her feelings to avoid becoming the person who “ruined the fun.”

Psychologists who study workplace relationships often emphasize that psychological safety—the feeling that people can express discomfort without punishment or embarrassment—is essential for healthy teams.

Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School and a leading researcher on psychological safety, explains that people perform better in environments where they feel safe speaking up about concerns and mistakes rather than hiding them.

She describes psychological safety as a workplace climate where individuals believe they can take interpersonal risks without fear of negative consequences.

This concept connects strongly to the OP’s experience. Her hesitation to say she was upset was not because she believed the prank was acceptable; it was because she feared social consequences from a group that appeared to support the behavior. That fear can cause people to stay silent even when their boundaries have been crossed.

At the same time, the OP’s decision to address the issue directly with her coworker shows an important balance between protecting herself and maintaining workplace relationships. She communicated the impact of his actions without immediately escalating the situation.

The lesson here is not that every workplace joke is harmful. Humor can create connection, but it should never depend on making someone feel powerless or uncomfortable.

Respectful coworkers pay attention not only to whether they intended to hurt someone, but also to how their actions affected the other person. A healthy workplace is one where people can laugh together while still knowing that personal boundaries, especially involving food, drinks, and personal belongings, are taken seriously.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors said drink tampering is serious and should be formally reported

Trondant13 − NOR. Food and drink should never be tampered with. Personally I would escalate this as far as I could go.

Affectionate_Hat9275 − Nor. What If you were allergic to dairy? Vegan? Fasting for health or religious reasons?

He has no right to mess with people at work in any way. This constitutes harassment and bullying and your manager should not be okay with it.

Make a formal complaint OP! Edit: thank you for the award!

OpheliaMorningwood − NOR. Contact HR and make a complaint. Enough is enough.

This group warned that allergies, diets, or health conditions make food pranks dangerous

lynnnysa1 − My best friend is INCREDIBLY allergic to dairy. Not lactose intolerant (although that would still be bad), but she is ALLERGIC.

That little "prank" would have sent her home sick! And what about if someone was vegan!

There are so many reasons why messing with the things someone is going to eat/drink is OFF LIMITS! In general I hate pranks.

I don't think they are funny. All they serve is to embarrass someone, and to me that is just mean. B

ut for it to be even be called a prank, and not bullying, the person it was done to has to ALSO find it funny.

If they don't then the "prankster " is just being an ass, and I can't see the difference between that and bullying.

softservesnob − NOR, that’s extremely invasive. part of me is wondering if he’s going to put more dangerous things into people’s bottles.

do you have an HR department?

These commenters argued that altering someone’s food or drink is not a prank but workplace bullying

MaryPink60 − NOR. He is immature, disgusting, and obnoxious. Go to HR. He deserves to be in trouble.

scaryunclejosh − NOR - that’s not a prank. Having a coworker forget to lock-out their computer and sending them an email

from themselves telling them to lock their computer is a prank. F__king with someone’s ingestibles isn’t cool or funny.

Dmau27 − A prank is putting postits on stuff or adding pennies to your office phone so it's heavy. Screwing with food is not okay. NOR

This group advised documenting incidents and escalating to HR or higher management

Dontfeedthebears − You need to go ABOVE your manager like right now, document everything at least in notes or something.

Photos. Everything you can. This is intentional contamination and the fact that everyone is acting like this is just f__king dandy fine

because “Crazy Pete just is like that and does wild stuff sometimes” is Absolutely NOT NORMAL.

This is, I repeat. . NOT, NORMAL!! I would feel absolutely gaslit right now. This is not normal.

The fact everyone is so nonchalant about this is because it has gone on for so long that they have a toxic office culture. NOR! !!

WhichWitch9402 − Meeting with manager and HR tomorrow. Document everything and who was there and what each said.

Ask management/HR what they are going to do. He tampered with your beverage. It doesn't matter what it was. He tampered with it.

What if you were allergic and went into anaphylactic shock? Or dairy allergy and spent days being ill?

Tell them he's created a hostile work environment, you don't feel safe and you want to know what steps they're going to take

If they don't say much or downplay it, then tell them you have no choice but to file a police report and they'll be hearing from your lawyer.

Never_enough_naps − I feel pranks in general a very immature and low effort “comedy”.

I don't hate them, but I'm not a fan of lots of them and I feel they need to adhere to strict rules to not hurt anyone

physically or emotionally and messing with anyone's food or drink is a absolute NO for pranks or anything else.

What do you think? Should workplace pranks have stricter limits, especially when food and drinks are involved?
