Dad Changes Jobs for His Family, Then Gets Accused of Working Late on Day One

in Social Issues

Becoming parents can change how couples measure effort.

One partner may spend the day earning money outside the home, while the other handles the exhausting and often lonely responsibility of caring for a young child.

Both contributions matter, but resentment can grow when either person feels unseen.

One father spent years working long hours and commuting so far that he often arrived home shortly before his one-year-old’s bedtime.

After hearing his wife’s concerns, he accepted a closer position so he could support her more and be present for important family moments.

Yet on his first day, she criticized when he left, questioned his boundaries, and accused him of coming home too late despite gaining several extra hours together.

Their planned celebration soon turned into a tense argument.

Read on to see why he canceled dinner and whether both spouses owed each other an apology.

Father faces tension with his wife after trying to balance work, family, and a first-day-of-new-job celebration

'AITAH for how I reacted to my wife’s complaints about my work hours?'

My wife and I have a 1 y/o. She has been a stay at home parent while I have

worked full time for the entirely of us having a kid.

For several years I worked a job with long hours and a far commute. To the

point where I would not get home until 7:30-8 PM, often just before our kid

goes to bed. My wife would constantly complain about how much I’m

working/how much time she has to spend parenting, and she had a point. I

know it’s exhausting. I do everything I can to support during the weekend,

but during the week she’s doing almost everything.

I recently changed jobs to be a lot closer to home. Largely because I

wanted to spend more time at home, support my wife in parenting more,

and not miss key moments and milestones in the early years.

On my first day in the new job, she texts me a rant in the morning about

how I shouldn’t go into work too early, how I need to set boundaries, and

complained about how I left the house early (despite it being over an hour

and a half later than I used to). I replied that I’d appreciate not starting the

day with that type of energy.

She later suggested we go out for dinner to celebrate my first day - an idea

I though was nice. I got home over an hour and a half earlier than I normally

do. But I got chewed out for “working late” and failing to listen to her

directives to set boundaries. My point was that, while I may not be nearly as

hands-on as her in parenting, working to support the family is a

contribution that matters, and that she should be happy that I spent an

extra 3 hours at home that I otherwise wouldn’t have instead of complaining.

I called off dinner as we were on our way out the door in the middle of the

argument, and said I didn’t have the energy or patience to deal with this

tonight. I put our 1 y/o to sleep, and then we spent the rest of the night

not talking.

Was I too harsh on her for her reaction? Was she being unreasonable? Do I

owe her an apology? Does she owe me one? AITAH here?

Update: After reading everyone’s feedback, my wife and I had a talk after

work today. She apologized unprompted. Said the message in the morning

wasn’t meant to come off that way, that it should’ve been spoken rather

than texted, and apologized for complaining as soon as I got home. I

expressed that I understood this came from a place of anxiety for having to

be alone in watching our kid, that I get how that can be a busy yet lonely

experience, and that I will make my best effort to set boundaries with work

and prioritize family. I found the perspectives given here really helped me

approach this better, so thank you to everyone who contributed.

Sometimes a loving change arrives too late to feel safe immediately.

After months of carrying most of the weekday parenting alone, the OP’s wife may have wanted to celebrate his new job while still fearing that the old pattern would quietly return.

This conflict was not only about what time he left for work or came home.

The OP had made a meaningful sacrifice by choosing a closer job so he could support his family and experience more of his child’s early life.

Naturally, he hoped his wife would notice the progress. Instead, her anxious messages and criticism made him feel that his effort had been dismissed before the new arrangement had even begun.

Meanwhile, she had spent a long period handling repetitive childcare, isolation, and responsibility with little weekday relief.

Her reaction was unfair in delivery, but it likely came from accumulated exhaustion rather than a belief that his employment contributed nothing.

A less obvious perspective is that the couple was measuring improvement from different starting points.

He compared his first day with his former schedule and saw three extra hours at home.

She compared it with the future she had imagined after the job change and worried that he was already allowing work to expand.

One person saw significant progress; the other saw an early warning sign.

Neither interpretation was completely irrational, but stress turned those perceptions into competing accusations.

That insight explains why canceling dinner was understandable but not ideal.

The OP was emotionally depleted and wisely avoided continuing the argument in public.

Still, the canceled celebration became another small loss during a moment that could have marked a hopeful transition.

Neither partner needed to win the evening; both needed reassurance that their work was visible.

Their update shows the healthiest resolution.

She apologized without being forced, and he recognized the loneliness and anxiety beneath her criticism.

Going forward, they may benefit from defining normal work hours, emergency exceptions, and protected family time before resentment returns.

The practical goal is not perfect equality every day, but predictable relief, mutual appreciation, and regular evidence that neither parent is carrying the family alone.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors emphasized offering wife support, childcare, or social outlets to reduce burnout

Zestyclose_Media_548 − I think she may need to consider going back to

work and you both need to consider childcare.

Crazy_Upstairs_1617 − NTA. Talk to your wife calmly about how you took a

job that literally saved you 3 hrs. I used to be a SAHM (not for me, 3 years

was my max) and the one thing that hit me is how isolating it can be.

Talk to your wife about joining mommy groups, daycare twice a week so

she can get some time to herself, and ask if she wants to go back to work. If

she says no, then gently tell her, you working is what's helping her stay

home with your child.

If she wants to complain, she's welcome to go back to work, join a local

mom group, look into daycare twice a week or something so she's getting a

break. Heck, look into a housekeeper once or twice every 2 weeks. Ask her

what it is she really needs

milesdraws − "You need to set boundaries" has she never had a job? 💀

Minute-Aioli-5054 − Reddit voting you an AH or not voting you an AH isn’t

going to resolve this issue with your wife.

I’m not saying your wife is in the right, but I get the feeling that she’s

holding onto resentment from your old working hours and might be

feeling burnt out herself (which does not take away your own feelings

about whether you feel burnt out or whatever).

I think you both should sit down and discuss how each other is feeling with

each other’s work load and determine ways that can help give each other a

break. Is there frustration over chores? Fair play card deck would be a good

way to start. Is there frustration about “me” time?

Can you figure out a way that you both get some downtime to focus on

your own hobbies or relaxing or whatever? I think it’s best to tackle it from

a “we’re a team” angle and “we can both make improvements” rather than

focusing on who is right or wrong.

Klutzy_End4889 − I grew up in a house where my dad getting home early

meant him being home at 8pm. He left before anyone woke up. My mum

stayed at home. I can tell you right now the only thing that kept her sane

was the fact that I still went to nursery.

Please look in to if you can find a way to afford it (I know child care has

gone insane recently). But even if it’s 1 day a weak it makes such a difference

Dry-Lawfulness-638 − Nta but there’s more going on. Listen to her. Talk.

Sounds like she needs additional support. Can you afford a babysitter or

mother’s helper? Mom needs time away from the baby

TravelAdmirable2482 − lol she 3 more hours and complained on day 1, nah

man you aren't in the wrong. NTA

This group pointed out that OP is NTA because he changed jobs to support the family financially

Big_Owl1220 − NTA- I've been a SAHM and I've worked 60 hours a week.

The only reason I could afford to be a SAHM, was bc of my husband making

the money and working the hours that he did. You can't have it both ways.

Your wife should get a job, or cut you some slack for the fact that you

already changed jobs to accommodate her, and need to figure out the

ropes at the new one.

WinEquivalent4069 − Definitely NTA. We all understand being a SAHM is a

full time job but OP is the sole breadwinner. He even switched jobs to one

closer to home to spend more hours with his family instead of commuting

an extra 2 to 3 hours daily.

This is the 1st week of the new job and she's not even giving any of them a

chance to adjust to the new schedule yet and she's already complaining.

Necessary_Brick3666 − Tell her if she’s THAT bothered by it then she

should get a job too, and take some of the work off you regarding the

finances. She can’t complain because you’re literally bringing the income in

so your family can actually eat sleep and watch tv etc.

Square_Ad6149 − NTA. You made a major life and career change

specifically to support her and your child, and she met that sacrifice with

immediate, aggressive micromanagement.

These users suggested clarifying work hours and boundaries to manage expectations with OP wife

SparkleKief − I’m confused. Did you go into work at your new job earlier

than required? Did you stay later than required?

tiggergirluk76 − NTA, her treatment of you was s__tty and you didn't need

that on your first day. However, you have been quite vague here about

what time you left and got home. It sounds like you might have over-

promised and under-delivered with regard to this new role.

If you sold it to her that you taking the job would mean you're available to

help more, yet still aren't actually there and helping when it's needed,

that's something you need to sit down and discuss. Maybe you left at

6.30am, and the time she needs help is 7-7.30am (for example).

Maybe she needs you around when cooking dinner at 5.30pm, but you're

not home until 6pm. You might be home an extra couple of hours, but if

they aren't the right couple of hours then it doesn't help. When my kids

were small, I would leave work at 5pm, then be back online to finish off

after they'd gone to bed.

Is that something you could try?

Looking through all these experiences, it’s clear that life can throw incredibly complex, emotionally charged, and morally ambiguous situations at us.

Each story highlights the difficulty of balancing personal boundaries, safety, honesty, and empathy, whether in family, work, or intimate relationships.

It makes you wonder, how would you act if faced with similar stakes? Would you speak up, set a boundary, or stay silent for the sake of peace?

What do you think is the right balance between self-preservation and loyalty? Share your thoughts, these stories are a masterclass in human complexity.
