Dad Refuses Another Baby After Two Sons, But Wife Won’t Stop Hoping for Her Dream Daughter

by Leona Pham

in Social Issues

Deciding whether to have another child is one of the biggest choices a couple can make, and it is one of the few decisions where both people need to be fully willing.

When one person feels strongly in either direction, pressure from family or friends can make the situation even more complicated.

The original poster (OP) and his wife already have two sons, and OP has been clear for a long time that he does not want more children.

Although his wife initially accepted that decision, her desire to have a daughter returned after their financial situation improved and they bought a larger home.

OP understands that she dreamed of having a girl, but he points out that another pregnancy would not guarantee that outcome and that he is comfortable with the family they already have.

As his wife continues bringing up the idea and receives support from others, OP is questioning whether he is being unreasonable or simply standing by a boundary he has repeatedly communicated.

'Two part question: AITAH for 1.Telling my wife I'm done. And 2.For what I said following the backlash of first part?'

Me (m36) and my wife (32) have 2 boys together. My wife did have some

gender disappointment with our second son (who is now a year old) as she

really wanted a girl. She got over it quickly though. And I expressed after

the birth of our second son that 2 was comfortable and enough for me and

that I didn't want anymore kids. Again, this was met with disappointment,

but she ultimately said (financially and living space wise) that having more

than 2 would be a hassle, and she got over it, though i still made it clear 2

was enough for me. I ended up getting a large promotion at work, and we

recently bought a new place that has an extra bedroom (which I was happy

for as I now have a proper office space. I work from home. We are in the

process of buying this property currently and haven't yet moved in) And

she brought up the fact that now we have more money and an extra

bedroom (quick point, she KNOWS this extra bedroom is for my office, not

another child) that we could have another baby. I again explained to her, 2

was enough for me, and that I still didn't want anymore kids. She got upset

and told me how desperate she was for a girl. I told her realistically, even if

we did, there was still a 50/50 chance of having another boy, I again,

repeated myself, that I was done having kids, and that our 2 boys are

enough. She has continued to be upset and bring it up constantly and even

got a little demanding about it, to a point where I had to get stern and tell

her "PLEASE, drop it..I don't want anymore children."

Naturally she's told her friends, and they think im being selfish. Even my

own mum thinks trying for another child that COULD be a girl would be a

nice idea." But i don't know how many more times I can repeat myself!! I

went on to say in front of one of her friends who was hounding me about

or when she visited us a couple of days ago "Can you imagine if the shoe

was on the other foot though? Say we had two girls, and i was demanding

we keep having babies until we had a boy but she didn't want anymore

kids. Can you IMAGINE the s__t i would receive being like that?" Me saying

that was then met with even more backlash and I ended up leaving the

room.. I DONT WANT MORE CHILDREN. I've been SO clear about that since

the birth of our second.

Decisions about having children are among the most personal choices a couple can make because they affect not only the future but also a person’s physical, emotional, and financial capacity.

In this situation, OP is not rejecting his wife’s feelings about wanting a daughter.

He appears to understand that her disappointment was real and that the dream of having a girl carried emotional meaning for her.

However, he is struggling with the feeling that his own wishes are being treated as less important than hers.

The central conflict is not really about whether another child would be wonderful. It is about consent and shared responsibility.

OP’s wife sees another pregnancy as a chance to complete the family she imagined, while OP sees the family they already have as complete.

Both feelings can be genuine.

Wanting a daughter is not wrong, and wanting to stop having children is not wrong either.

The difficulty comes when one partner’s hope becomes pressure on the other partner to continue.

A different perspective is that gender disappointment can sometimes become tied to grief over an imagined future rather than dissatisfaction with the children someone already has.

A parent may picture certain experiences, traditions, or a relationship with a child of a specific gender, and when reality differs, they mourn that expectation.

However, having another child does not guarantee that dream will happen.

A new baby should never be viewed as a solution to disappointment because the child’s identity and personality cannot be chosen.

This perspective is important because OP’s concerns are not simply about refusing his wife’s dream.

Another child would affect his daily life, career, finances, mental energy, and relationship with his existing children.

A child deserves to be welcomed because both parents genuinely want that child, not because one parent is hoping the next pregnancy will create a different outcome.

At the same time, OP’s wife’s sadness may deserve compassion.

She may not only be asking for another baby; she may be expressing grief over letting go of the possibility of having a daughter.

That emotional loss can feel significant even when she loves her sons completely.

Ultimately, there is no compromise where one person “half agrees” to have a child.

A couple can compromise on many things, but bringing a new person into the world requires two enthusiastic yeses.

OP and his wife may need to focus less on convincing each other and more on understanding what this desire represents for each of them.

A complete family is not defined by whether it contains a boy or a girl, but by whether the people already in it feel valued and loved.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters urged OP to get a vasectomy to prevent unwanted future pregnancies

BraveRefrigerator552 − NTA. I’d get a vasectomy.

VioletFlames13 − Get a vasectomy asap

sleepyslothpajamas − NTA. You need to get snipped like yesterday.

JellyfishDull3783 − NTA. Having children requires you both to say yes. No

one should be pressured into having children. You are correct that If the

shoe was on the other foot you would be receiving well deserved grief.

Lucky_Respect5496 − NTA. But you definitely need to get a vasectomy

because I definitely see her getting off of birth control and not tell you.

These commenters agreed that having another child requires both partners’ consent and OP’s boundary should be respected

NoDanaOnlyZuuI − NTA not wanting more kids is a completely valid

boundary, and you’ve been consistent about it since your second son was

born. If you don’t want more, that has to be respected. You’re also not the

a__hole for what you said to her friend.

You just pointed out a clear double standard: if you were the one

pressuring her for “just one more” until you got the gender you wanted,

people would call you selfish or controlling. Saying it out loud only made

people uncomfortable because it’s true.

Crafty_Special_7052 − NTA and what would happen if you have a 3rd boy?

Is she going to get again push for another baby when odds are you are

going to keep having boys?

These commenters worried the wife’s desire for a daughter could create favoritism or disappointment toward sons

Monday0987 − I've already commented NTA. However I just want to add.

Your youngest is only 1 year old and your wife wants another baby because

she isn't satisfied with the one she got. A daughter might result in at least

one of your sons being sidelined by your wife. The daughter might end up

"the golden child" and your youngest son will suffer.

There are enough adults on Reddit with stories of childhood favouritism

and how it damaged them to know that this is a real possibility. Your wife

seems overly obsessed about having a daughter and it honestly doesn't

sound balanced or healthy. Would she consider therapy? She needs to deal

with her "disappointment" in her baby boy and get over it for her kid's sake.

mmmkay938 − You say she “got over it” but she clearly hasn’t. She just

stopped talking about it for a while.

Ok_Independence_3372 − I would definitely get a vasectomy

These commenters suggested the couple needs serious discussion or counseling because the disagreement could damage the marriage

Straight-Example9126 − Um, this marriage is a done deal. I don't know if

marital counselling will help here either because she's hung up on having

one more kid. Let a few days pass. Once the situation calms down, sit with

her and break it down to her: 1. Marital counselling is needed and an

outsider perspective needed.

2. If she still pushes, you're ready to set her free. You will give her divorce

and she can pursue a new relationship if she wants to have a girl child.

Reproductive coercion is legit irrespective of the gender. Be cautious about

having s__ual relations with her right now (might get pregnant

"accidentally" to force you).

If you don't want to give her a divorce, announce that you are getting a

vasectomy done. Any other person tries to influence, be firm in saying that

you don't want to have 3rd child. If that's unacceptable, she's free to leave

u and marry someone else. No outsider has say in this. NTA.

WorldlinessLow8824 − NTA . It’s a tough thing couples deal with - my co

worker ended up with FIVE boys because his wife wanted a girl. He wanted

to stop also and it was an on going discussion. Good luck.

Moist-Release-9227 − Nta. You're going to need a vasectomy. My husband

and I were done after 2 kids. We used birth control and condoms and still

ended up pregnant 4 years after our last. Your wife wants a baby, and no

amount of you telling her no is going to stop her from wanting to get that

baby. Just have the procedure without her knowing.

After building a family with two children, the OP thought the decision was settled, but his wife’s hope for a daughter kept reopening the conversation.

While some people sympathize with wanting a specific family dream, others believe having another child requires two enthusiastic parents, not pressure from one side.

A child should never be treated as a way to achieve a preferred outcome.

Was OP being unfair by refusing another baby, or was he right to hold his boundary? How should couples handle major disagreements about expanding their family?
