Contrary to their on-screen characters, Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Rickman’s relationship in real life couldn’t be more wholesome.
Radcliffe, famous for his role as Harry Potter, recently shared touching details about his bond with Rickman, who played the formidable Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise. The actors worked closely together in the Harry Potter film series from 2001 until 2011.
During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz showed Radcliffe a throwback video of Rickman speaking fondly about his pride in the latter’s achievements. Rickman, who passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer, had a profound influence on Radcliffe, both personally and professionally.
In the video, coincidentally also hosted by Horowitz, Rickman recalled moments spent with Radcliffe and the rest of the children cast off-set, including a memorable encounter in New York.
“I’ve managed to sit down in a café in New York with Dan at one point, he was down the road in one theater, I was up the road in another,” Rickman said, reflecting on seeing Radcliffe perform in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and expressing admiration for his dancing skills.
Radcliffe was visibly emotional seeing the video and recalling his relationship with the late actor. He then revealed the deep respect and slight intimidation he felt towards Rickman during their early Harry Potter days.
“I will say, Alan was somebody I was so intimidated by, cause how could you not be intimidated by that voice? Even just hearing that voice you forget, you forget how low that voice was until, like, it echoes through you. I was so intimidated by him for the first, like, three movies. I was just terrified of him. I was like, ‘This guy hates me.'”
Radcliffe admitted after watching the video. However, as their relationship evolved, so did Rickman’s support, which extended beyond their film sets.
Somewhere along the line he saw that I really wanted to do this, and I really wanted to work at it, and he cut short a vacation in Canada to come to see me in Equus, he saw every piece of stage work I ever did while he was alive,” the Now You See Me star added.
Rickman’s support didn’t end there; he attended every stage performance Radcliffe did while he was alive, offering guidance and encouraging him to explore different acting techniques.
“I’m so lucky to hear him say that, that’s really lovely,” the Harry Potter actor concluded. Alright, now who’s cutting the onions?
The Harry Potter films wrapped up over a decade ago, but the legacy continues to thrive through various adaptations and extensions, including theme parks and spin-offs, even despite J.K Rowlings’ recent transphobic controversy. You can check out this article where the author told Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe himself to “save their apologies” in case they want to apologize to her for voicing their support for the transgender community.
Amid ongoing interest in the wizarding world, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to reboot the live-action franchise into a TV series for its streaming platform, Max. Set to span ten seasons, this ambitious adaptation aims to introduce the beloved magical universe to a new generation, though the original cast is not expected to return.
