Daughter Accidentally Sends Stalking Parents on a 400-Mile Wild Goose Chase Toward Canada

Imagine being twenty-seven years old, financially independent, and finally putting a down payment on your very first home. For most people, this is a milestone to celebrate with a bottle of champagne. For one Redditor, it became the starting line for a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek.

She recently discovered that her parents were not just hovering but actively spying on her. After they refused to return her spare key, she changed her locks. But the invasion of privacy did not stop at her front door.

While checking for trackers after a friend’s scary dating experience, she found a device on her own car. Assuming it was a creepy date, she tossed it onto a produce pallet. That pallet was headed straight for the Canadian border.

She went golfing and turned off her phone for some peace. Meanwhile, her parents were driving hundreds of miles in a frantic pursuit of a crate of vegetables. The fallout has left the family in a state of total chaos.

The Story

Daughter Accidentally Sends Stalking Parents on a 400-Mile Wild Goose Chase Toward Canada
Not the actual photo

AITA for sending my parents on a wild goose chase that almost got to the Canadian border?

I (F27) do not live at home. I do not take money from my parents. I don't really rely on them for anything. I have a job

and I just put a down payment on my first home. My parents think I am a helpless damsel. I had to get the locks changed

on my apartment because they had an emergency key that they used randomly. When I asked for it back they refused. One of my friends

recently went on a date with a creepy guy that put an Apple tracker in her car. She has an app that detects them so

she found it and tossed it in the river.. I got the app because I am out there dating and I got concerned after

hearing this story. I am seeing someone right now and it seems to be going well. He seems a decent fellow. Yes that's a

Princess Bride quote. Anyway I found a tracker on my car. I thought it was the guy. I didn't want to give him any

clue that I found it. So I tossed it onto a pallet of produce my company has headed to Canada. It turns out it

wasn't him. I did not go see my parents this last weekend but went golfing instead. The guy I am seeing called but I

said I was busy. He was cool with it. My parents on the other hand called me a dozen times. I said I was

golfing. They asked were and I told them.. I put my phone in do not disturb and had fun with my friends..

My dad called me from Boise Idaho to ask why I threw away their tracker.

I laughed and said I would have to apologize to the guy I'm seeing because I assumed it was him doing something that shady..

My parents are upset that I scared them and called me ungrateful for making light of their concerns.

As a writer, I find the sheer audacity of these parents to be absolutely staggering. It is rare to see such a literal interpretation of helicopter parenting. Watching them chase a pallet of lettuce toward the border is almost cinematic.

The produce pallet move was a stroke of absolute genius. It provided the perfect “inconceivable” ending to a very stressful situation. I felt a wave of relief for the daughter when she realized her date was innocent.

However, the realization that her own parents were the culprits is truly heartbreaking. This story moves quickly from a funny prank to a serious discussion about family trust. It leads us to wonder how many parents are actually tracking their adult children today.

Expert Opinion

This situation highlights a growing trend in digital age parenting often called “stealth tracking.” While many parents claim they track their children for safety, it often becomes a tool for control. This is especially true when the child is an independent adult living on their own.

According to research from Psychology Today, tracking can actually undermine a person’s sense of autonomy. It prevents the adult child from feeling fully capable of managing their own life. This creates a cycle of anxiety for both the parent and the child.

A study in the Journal of Family Studies found that constant monitoring can damage the bond of trust. About 15 percent of parents admit to using GPS tracking on their adult children without consent. This behavior is often linked to high levels of parental anxiety.

Dr. Henry Cloud, a renowned psychologist, discusses the necessity of firm boundaries in his work. He states that “Boundaries are not walls, but gates that let in the good and keep out the bad.” He explains that tracking an adult is a violation of that gate. You can read more about his insights on setting boundaries with family.

The parents in this story used the word “ungrateful” to justify their actions. Experts suggest this is a common manipulation tactic used to deflect from the original boundary violation. It shifts the blame from the tracker to the daughter’s reaction.

In reality, the parents were behaving like private investigators rather than a support system. This creates a “smothering” effect that often drives adult children into low-contact relationships. The daughter’s decision to laugh it off shows incredible resilience in the face of such a major betrayal.

Respect is a two-way street that requires privacy to thrive. Without privacy, the relationship becomes a one-sided surveillance state.

Community Opinions

Netizens were absolutely floored by the parents’ behavior and their choice of words. Most commenters were quick to quote the daughter’s favorite movie back at her. They felt the parents were lucky they weren’t facing legal charges for stalking.

These users focused on the parents’ misuse of the word “ungrateful” and their total lack of shame.

Discount_Mithral − NTA. This level of helicopter parenting on an almost 30yo is nuts. Have a sit-down meal with your parents at a nice restaurant.

(People are less likely to make a scene if they are somewhere nice or in public. )

Tell them that the tracker was out of line, and it was stalker level behavior. They need to be treating you like a capable adult.

baka-tari - ". . . called me ungrateful"? Why do they keep using that word?

I do not think it means what they think it means. NTA. They should be grateful you allow them in your life at all after shenanigans like this.

wittyidiot - So, obviously NTA. And likewise a funny and well-crafted post.

But in the real world, this is grounds for a restraining order. This is controlling and insane, and it will only escalate.

Regular_Boot_3540 − What? How is it your fault that your parents are insane and went so far as to drive to the Canadian border to stalk you?

NTA! I'm glad the guy you're dating isn't the one who did it. You don't need any more obsessive weirdos in your life.

Some readers suggested that the daughter needs to upgrade her home security immediately.

subsailor1968 − NTA Get a ROUS. (Restraining Order of Unusual Size)

ResoluteMuse - NTA but you knew that. Happy to give you all of that validation!

You know you will need cameras in your new home for the random drive-by’s and attempts to get in right?

No codes, no keys, no spares hiding under the doormat.

MaybeHughes - Your post is so lighthearted for something so horrifying.

You're saying your parents were sneaking into your house without your permission? That's not funny or annoying; it's really really disturbing.

A few users suggested some hilarious ways to turn the tables on the overbearing parents.

DubiousPeoplePleaser - You need a follow up act. Tell them they’re not getting any younger and have become forgetful,

so you put up some cameras in their house to keep an eye on them. Just drop a diffuse line that make them believe you are watching.

1lilqt - LMFAO. ...I WOULD'VE LET THEM DRIVE TO CANADA. ... lmfao

ParagonOfAdequacy - Shame you couldn't have got it onto a plane headed overseas. 100% NTA

How to Navigate a Situation Like This

Handling overbearing parents requires a blend of firm boundaries and zero tolerance for privacy leaks. First, you should secure your physical spaces by changing locks and using smart security systems. Never give a spare key to someone who has already violated your trust.

If you find a tracker, document it with photos before removing it. This provides a clear record if you ever need to involve the authorities later. Communicate your boundaries clearly and in writing so there is no confusion.

De-escalation starts with refusing to engage in “guilt trips” about being ungrateful. Simply state that your privacy is not up for negotiation. If the behavior continues, consider going low-contact for a set period of time. This sends a clear message that your autonomy is a requirement for a relationship. Your peace of mind is your most valuable asset.

Conclusion

This family fallout is a wild example of what happens when parental concern turns into a covert operation. The daughter managed to find humor in a situation that would leave most people feeling violated. It is a tough lesson for any parent who thinks their child is still a “helpless damsel.”

Standing your ground is the only way to ensure your adulthood is respected. The produce pallet may have gone to Canada, but the daughter’s boundaries are right where they belong.

Was the daughter’s “wild goose chase” a fair punishment for the tracking, or was it too mean? How would you handle finding a secret tracker planted by your own family?
