Family tensions have been running high ever since the world changed, and emotions are starting to boil over.

With a daughter who recently dyed her hair pink, a wife struggling with family drama, and a son making life-altering decisions, original poster’s patience was tested.

When his daughter couldn’t let go of her mother’s reaction to her new look, it was the last straw for him. In a moment of frustration, he snapped.

Now, he’s left wondering if he went too far or if his daughter was just being unreasonable.

Daughter’s new hair color sparks tension, leading to a heated argument with her mom

'AITA for calling my daughter a f__king i__ot?'

My nineteen year old daughter has been home since the schools shut down

and everyone’s nerves are just frayed from too much time together.

My wife is having issues with her family, our son just got married without telling anyone

and we think he made a huge mistake, and my wife has been under a lot of stress.

My daughter dyed her hair pink last night and when my wife saw it she started to cry.

She was not crying over the hair.

If it wasn’t the hair something else would have triggered it

but my daughter could not let it go.

She kept harassing my wife about why she didn’t like the hair.

My wife said she was going to bed and locked the door

and my daughter was still going on from outside the door.

I told her to grow up and stop acting like a f__king i__ot

and now she will barley speak to either of us.

In this situation, OP is clearly experiencing tension at home, and emotions are running high for everyone involved.

It sounds like there’s a lot of stress from multiple sources, family drama, personal issues, and changes in their lives.

When emotions are already fragile, even small incidents can escalate quickly.

While it’s understandable that OP might be frustrated with his daughter for pushing the issue with her mother.

Especially when it’s clear that the hair color is not the root cause of his wife’s distress, the way OP reacted by using harsh language isn’t the most productive way to handle it.

Yelling at or belittling someone, especially when they’re already feeling vulnerable, can worsen the situation and lead to long-term hurt feelings.

From a psychological perspective, it’s important to remember that everyone in the household is likely dealing with their own stress and emotions, and this could manifest in ways that seem irrational or overwhelming.

His wife’s tears, for example, could have been a result of the cumulative stress she’s been under, and his daughter’s need for validation might have been an attempt to get some emotional support, even if it was misplaced in this context.

In situations like this, communication is key. Instead of getting frustrated, OP could have taken a step back and tried to have a calm conversation with his daughter and his wife about what’s really going on beneath the surface.

The issue with the pink hair might just be the tipping point for other unresolved issues, and addressing those as a family could prevent more incidents like this from happening in the future.

It’s also worth considering that, in families, everyone has different ways of coping with stress and emotions.

OP might have felt the need to shut down the conversation quickly to restore peace, but his daughter might have been seeking attention or reassurance during an already difficult time.

Acknowledging this, and offering support in a way that doesn’t dismiss her feelings, might have helped resolve the tension more effectively.

Overall, OP’s reaction, while understandable in the moment, likely exacerbated the situation and pushed his daughter further away. A more empathetic approach, where everyone’s feelings are acknowledged, would probably have led to a better outcome.

Now, OP may need to take the initiative to apologize to his daughter and wife, open a dialogue, and try to rebuild their communication in order to ease the ongoing stress in the household.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

This group focused on the misplaced aggression

liofotias − YTA. You easily could have told your daughter

that her mom was under a lot of stress and that her crying wasn’t necessarily

due to her hair being dyed.

StrawberryFrapp − YTA. You said it yourself: your wife is not crying

because of your daughter's hair, she's crying because of stress,

so why are you taking it out on your daughter?

Skoodledoo − YTA. If your wife was so hair-triggered (pardon the pun),

over your daughter having pink hair, then it wasn't about your daughter,

it's about your wife's mental health. You're focusing on the wrong person.

These Redditors focused on the verbal abuse

JJennnnnnifer − YTA. In what world is it okay to call anyone a f__king i__ot,

much less your own child.

GreenEyedAP − YTA. The whole damn world is stressed the f__k out

and most of us still manage not to say s__t to people that will stick with them for years.

She’s going to be fifty years old and still remember the time her own father

called her a f__king i__ot. Good job.

She’s 19. Everyone is a bit of an a__hole at 19. All you did was ensure

that your daughter thinks you don’t care about her emotional well-being

because you’re willing to call her names at the drop of a hat.

HighCdownLow − YTA. Don’t have children if you can’t deal with them

without unnecessary name calling.

You’re being intentionally vague about your wife crying and not communicating.

Regardless, there’s nothing here that warranted stooping to that level.

Obviously communication is a huge issue in this family,

with your son not telling anyone about his marriage,

your wife unable to talk to anyone clearly about her stress

and now you're unwilling to tell your daughter to back off without insulting her.

What a mess.

Edited to make it clearer that OP stated that the wife was crying because of stress

& not the daughters hair.

These users analyzed the failure to de-escalate

AReasonForTomorrow − Be warned, I skimmed this so I might miss some details

but I'm on mobile and I'm busy rn so: ESH

Nothing about her behavior scream, "f__king i__ot," to me.

She was genuinely confused on why your wife was crying,

from what she could analyze, was from her hair.

Yeah, no duh she wants an answer.

Should she have kept hounding for an answer?

No, you should de-escalate the situation

(which you didn't do by the way, causing the conflict to get worse. )

But she's not a, "f__king i__ot," for wanting to get an answer.

Yes, your wife might've been stressed, that doesn't mean your daughter isn't stressed either.

She's 19, a stressful time in life where you transition into an adult, you're all stressed.

Just because you're older doesn't put you both on a higher pillar than her.

She's not a f__king i__ot, and you handled the situation in one of the worst possible ways,

which was blowing up the situation way more than it needed to be.

She (your daughter) was wrong to keep going on about it from the other side of the door,

that being said, you should've tried to keep your cool.

"Look, honey I need you to calm down. I know you're upset, and I can 100% see why.

Just give your mother 20 minutes to calm down,

and I promise we'll come out and talk this out.

She's just really stressed right now, but she didn't mean to hurt your feelings,

please give her a little bit to calm down,

so that when you talk things out your mother isn't in hysterics or crying during it."

Compare that to, "Grow up! !! Stop acting like a f__king i__ot!!!"

Your daughter was wrong to keep hounding you for this,

but I'm voting that you're the bigger antagonist here

because your reaction was much worse than hers in my opinion.

ThrowawayOPgirl − YTA She offended your wife and wanted to settle why.

Neither of you gave her a concrete answer and you lashed out at her when she inquired.

She is obviously not an adult and capable of making adult decisions like understanding

when people need space. You both are having a hard time

and I get that but a child obviously isn't going to.

Children need to be told these things so they can learn empathy.

How would she have been able to understand she was having a hard time

if your wife didn't tell her? Failure of parenting on both sides.

Edit: after rereading I realize she isn't under 18 but 19 is still a teen in my book

if they're living at home

The OP’s frustration is clear, especially given the tensions in the household and the emotional stress his wife is going through.

However, while the daughter’s behavior in harassing her mother about the hair was childish, the OP’s response, calling her an “idiot,” was likely harsh and may have exacerbated the situation.

The situation seems to be rooted in more underlying issues than just the hair dye, and the argument may have been the tipping point.

Do you think the OP was justified in his response, or should he have approached it with more empathy? How would you handle a situation where tensions are high and emotions are running rampant? Share your thoughts below!
