Daughter Reminds Mom Of Her Father’s Past After Dementia Brings Old Trauma Back

A child caring for a parent with dementia was forced to confront painful memories that their family had long avoided.

This Redditor explains that their father, who now has dementia, was once an angry and intimidating parent before therapy helped him change. As his condition progresses, some of those old behaviors are returning, making caregiving emotionally difficult.

While supporting their mother, they mentioned that his current behavior reminded them of childhood, only for their mother to insist he was never abusive because he was not physically violent.

The conversation led the Redditor to realize that their mother may have minimized or forgotten the emotional harm their family experienced, including a traumatic incident where their father destroyed a dinner table during an outburst.

A caregiver confronts her mother about painful childhood memories while supporting her father with dementia

'"He never was THAT bad..."'

My dad has dementia and unfortunately we are part of the caregiving circle to support my mom through it all.

He was a horrible dad before he went through therapy, and the dementia is causing him to revert more and more into who he was before he fixed a lot...

So helping out can be rather triggering.

On one night, after we finally got him put to bed, my mom was chatting with me and venting about how hard things have become,

and I let slip "Yeah, he reminds me of when I was younger.". Mom: What do you mean?

Me: You know, before therapy. When he was always angry and we had to walk on eggshells all the time..

Mom: But he was never abusive, though. We weren't perfect, but he never got physical.

That's when I figured out that she had blinded/gaslit herself about what it was like for us when we were younger,

and that she was just as much of a problem with her enabling. So I reminded her..

Me: I was fully afraid of him as a kid.. Mom: No, I don't remember that.... (classic)

Me: Especially when he came home and was watching the news. We had to basically not exist.

One time, we were eating dinner in the next room, and we were being "too loud."

You remember he flipped the table with all of the food and plates and everything crashed on the floor....

Mom: I must have not been home. I must have been working.. Me: The axe forgets but the tree remembers.

She got quiet and the conversation ended after that. Y'all - she was definitely there at the table flipping event.

I specifically remember what she was wearing as she helped us clean up the mess, and that she kept telling us this is why we needed to be quiet when...

She almost convinced me that I made it up, but every sibling remembers this event (and there's seven of us).

He hasn't gotten to the point of being physical again, but when he does, I stop helping and demand she puts him in a home. He's always nicer to strangers...

Some memories do not disappear simply because years have passed. For many people, childhood experiences are carried quietly for decades, especially when those experiences involved fear, unpredictability, or feeling responsible for keeping the peace.

When the person who caused that fear later becomes vulnerable, the emotions can become incredibly complicated. Compassion and pain can exist at the same time.

In this situation, the original poster is not only caring for a father with dementia. She is being placed back into a relationship dynamic that once made her feel unsafe.

Dementia may be changing her father’s behavior, but it is also bringing back memories of who he was before therapy and personal growth. Her mother appears to remember the past through a different lens, focusing on the fact that he was not physically violent while overlooking the emotional impact of living with constant anger and fear.

For OP, the table-flipping incident was not just about broken dishes; it represented the feeling that everyone in the household had to adjust themselves around one person’s emotions.

Some readers may wonder whether the mother truly forgot or whether she is avoiding painful truths. Another perspective is that people who survive difficult relationships sometimes develop coping mechanisms that allow them to continue functioning.

Acknowledging the full extent of a partner’s harmful behavior may also mean facing years of regret, guilt, or questions about what could have been different.

OP’s mother may not be intentionally trying to dismiss her children’s experiences; she may have created a version of the past that was easier for her to live with. However, that does not make her children’s memories less valid.

Psychologist Dr. Judith Herman, known for her work on trauma and recovery, explains that traumatic experiences are often defined not only by what happened but by the lasting sense of fear, helplessness, and loss of safety they create. She emphasizes that recognizing and naming those experiences is an important part of healing.

The National Institute on Aging also notes that dementia can cause changes in personality, behavior, and emotional regulation, but caregivers still need support and should not ignore their own wellbeing while providing care.

This insight explains why OP’s reaction is so intense. She is not simply reacting to an elderly parent’s difficult behavior. She is confronting the return of feelings she experienced as a child.

Her boundary, that she will step away if physical aggression returns, is not a lack of compassion. It is recognition that caregiving should not require someone to repeatedly sacrifice their own safety.

The situation may require a different approach from the family. Supporting the father does not mean denying the past, and caring for the mother does not mean carrying all responsibility alone. Professional dementia care, respite services, and honest conversations about safety may become necessary as symptoms progress.

A person can forgive someone, understand their illness, and still decide that certain boundaries must remain. Sometimes protecting yourself is also part of breaking a painful family cycle.

Here’s what the community had to contribute:

These commenters emphasized that traumatic experiences can remain vivid for victims even when abusers or others deny them

Reina-8 − Perfect response. The axe forgets, but the forest remembers. To the kids that was a traumatic event. To them that was Tuesday.

LeLuDallas5 − SEVEN siblings remembering the exact same event is a certain amount of intentionally choosing to forget the table flip event.

Hugs if you want them, I've so far only had to deal with a grandparent with dementia who was mostly sweet but a little

"I'm sorry she's old" racism and a lot of physical care, dunno how I'll deal with my parents if one or the other develops it.

Smile_Terrible − I had that with my mom as well. I won't go in to details about the things my dad did, but they were bad.

Later on after I was an adult me and my mom were talking about past stuff and she asked me "Do you think you were abused? "

I just looked at her and said "Well yeah" I mean she was there.

So I can sympathsize with you about the denial.

These Redditors criticized the mother’s denial and shared empathy for those affected by family trauma

Impossible_Balance11 − She's fully cruising that river in Egypt, isn't she? I'm so sorry.

Pandoratastic − If he's nicer to strangers, the dementia might help with that if he forgets who you are.

This group supported holding the mother accountable for failing to protect the children

Bargle-Nawdle-Zouss − If your mother retains full possession of her faculties, then yes, by all means, rub her nose in it.

Politely, calmly, but let her know that she was just as culpable, since she didn't defend you and your siblings.

peachesfordinner − You don't owe either of them s__t. Take care of yourself. Let him get sent to the worst Medicaid home.

And don't forget his abuse with the garbage "don't speak ill if the dead". They harmed the living who are still there hurting.

Your mom is a selfish horrible person to sacrifice your well-being as children just so she didn't have to do the difficult job of standing up to her bully of...

MMorrighan − I wish I had advice but all I have is this digital hug. Good on you for holding your mom to the truth.

These users discussed how abuse victims may minimize or suppress painful memories as a survival mechanism

3x1st3nt1al − $20 on the reason he’s nicer to strangers is because he tried to pull his b__lshit and someone bit back.

KaoJin-Wo − I get that he is triggering. Perhaps you can find other ways to support your mom without having to be around her husband.

But also, not that I am excusing her or minimizing your experience, but victims of abuse - even if not physical - often block it out.

They say whatever they have to to themselves in order to just get through.

It is a legit coping mechanism, even if brutal and unhealthy and sometimes plain dangerous.

She did what she had to in order to survive her marriage. The really hard part will be seeing her realize it after he’s gone, with no way to get...

That will suck for you as much as for her - more tha it sucks now to hear her deny it.

My maladaptive coping g mechanism for watching that is to just pity them for it.

Not entirely helpful, but helps me avoid blowups. I’m so sorry you are going through this. Hopefully you prioritize your well being over his.

Can someone support a parent while protecting themselves from old wounds, or are some family responsibilities too complicated to carry alone? Share your thoughts below!
