Daughter’s Wedding Approaches, But Mom Expects Her Caregiver Daughter to Handle Everything Again

in Social Issues

When someone spends years caring for a family member, it can become easy for others to assume they will always handle everything.

But even the most dedicated caregivers deserve moments where they can step away and focus on themselves and the people they love.

The original poster (OP) has spent a decade taking care of her mother while balancing her own life.

Now, with her daughter’s wedding approaching, OP made one simple request: she wanted someone else to handle her mother’s transportation so she could fully enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

However, her brother and other family members began pushing back and trying to shift the responsibility back onto her.

Read on to see why OP decided she was finally done giving in.

Mother caring for her elderly mom for years asks her brother to handle caregiving duties during her daughter’s wedding

'AITA for refusing to take care of my mom on my daughter wedding day?'

My daughter wedding is next month. For 10 years I have taken care of my

mom, she lives with me. 6 months ago I asked my brother to please make

sure the day of the wedding she got to the chapel and to the venue and

back to the hotel. In general I want to focus 100% on my daughter and I

asked him to handle moms needs. He bulked at first but then agreed. Over

the last 3 weeks I have gotten 6 different manipulation tactics to get me to

do it all anyway. My brother, his wife and my mother have been talking,

planning to get me to do it all anyway. He has gotten a hotel walking

distance from the venue so his wife and he can get drunk. I asked how will

you get mom to the hotel then when she wants to leave at 5 when it’s not

over till 8. Answer your not drinking anyway. Irrelevant because I don’t

want to miss a minute of her big day. So many other tactics. Yes they

always try to manipulate me but I’m not relenting this time. So AITA for not

relenting and wanting this one day in 10 years to enjoy my daughters wedding

A person can love their family deeply and still reach a point where they need one moment to belong entirely to themselves.

Caring for someone for years is an act of love, but it can also quietly turn into an expectation where others forget the caregiver is a person with their own important moments.

In this situation, OP is not refusing to help her mother out of selfishness.

She has spent a decade being the primary caregiver, which likely means countless appointments, daily responsibilities, emotional labor, and sacrifices that others may not fully see.

Her daughter’s wedding is not just another event on the calendar, it is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone where OP wants to be present as a mother, not as a caretaker managing transportation, schedules, and someone else’s needs.

The biggest issue is not even the transportation itself. OP had a reasonable solution: she asked her brother six months in advance to take responsibility for their mother that day.

This gave him plenty of time to plan. The problem is that after agreeing, he and other family members appear to have tried to shift the responsibility back onto OP through guilt and pressure.

There is also an important family dynamic here: when one person becomes “the reliable one,” relatives can unconsciously begin treating their availability as unlimited.

They may not see each request as a major burden because they are only looking at one individual favor, while the caregiver experiences it as one more responsibility added to years of carrying everything.

That perspective applies strongly here. OP is not saying, “I don’t care about my mother.”

She is saying, “I have cared for my mother for ten years, and on this specific day I need someone else to step in.” Those are completely different messages.

The argument from the brother that OP “isn’t drinking anyway” misses the emotional point.

Being sober does not mean being available as the designated caregiver.

OP wants to watch her daughter’s ceremony, enjoy conversations, celebrate, take photos, and experience the day without constantly monitoring when her mother needs to leave.

The practical solution is exactly what OP has already tried to do: make another adult responsible.

If her brother agreed, then he needs to follow through.

If he cannot or does not want to, the family should arrange paid transportation, another relative, or another care plan but the solution should not automatically be returning the entire burden to the person who has carried it for ten years.

Wanting one uninterrupted day to celebrate her daughter is not abandonment.

It is a reasonable boundary from someone who has spent years putting everyone else first.

These are the responses from Reddit users:

These commenters agreed OP should stop carrying all caregiving responsibilities and make brother step up

miriandrae − I would point blank tell all of them “X day is Daughter’s day.

Brother you are responsible for Mother, if you cannot be responsible for

Mother, YOU need to find someone else who isn’t me OR Mother cannot

go and it will be YOUR fault. I am the Mother of the Bride, I have a role to

play in the wedding for MY daughter.

I cannot be responsible for mother as I have for 10 years. Time for you to

step up for 1 day as I have for the last 3, 650 days.

Once Mother has been brought back to the hotel, you can walk back to the

wedding and drink or you are acknowledging that you value drinking over

your mother and sister and niece having a good day.

” Also it may be time to look for another situation for your mother,

because it’s obvious they take for granted that you will take care of her over yourself and your children.

PermissionDependent6 − NTAH. Sounds like you need to send mom to your

brother and his wife to take care of her.

Patient_Gas_5245 − NTA, you have been the primary caretaker. Your mom

and brother dont care if it is your daughters wedding. They are going to

make sure that you are waiting on your mom. Drop the rope, I get that you

have done all the work but it is time for your brother and his wife to take

care of mom. Get therapy and set boundaries

This group recommended creating backup care plans because they do not trust brother to follow through

Osidestarfish − Have you thought about maybe hiring your mother a

caregiver/companion for the day? Someone who’s there just to attend to

her needs and get her back safely at the end of the evening. Because it

sounds like your brother and SIL are not going to do it at all. NTA

MrsSmith-saysso − NTA I have been the sister who was responsible for my

mother although she didn’t live with me. On the few occasions I asked for

family members to pick up the slack so I could enjoy something without

worry they inevitably let me down.

While you shouldn’t have to, you should probably make a back up plan with

a paid caregiver since I guarantee your brother will let you down. Been

there. Have the t-shirt. Your brother is the AH you are not. We all know this

so take steps now to avoid disappointment and enjoy your daughter’s big day! Congratulations.

MonikerSchmoniker − You KNOW your brother will be a no show. At this

point, tell brother and mom IN WRITING: I will not be available on

Daughter’s wedding day to manage Mother’s care. Brother, if you won’t be

attending to Mom that day, mom will miss the wedding. I will be too busy

helping daughter to also help Mother. This is non-negotiable.

Mother, if attending the wedding is important to you, and if you think

Brother will not be able to keep his word to assist you, I think you and

Brother might want to discuss alternative care for the 48 hours

surrounding the wedding. I won’t be involved in those discussions. This is my final word on the subject.

These Redditors supported protecting the daughter’s wedding day and refusing to let family drama take over

Nsr444 − Nta, put your phone on DND with only your daughter that can call through it. Have a great day!

Novel_Ad1943 − I’d be blunt about it, “This is my daughter’s day and she’s

the one who gets my energy, time and attention. So Mom you can either

put on your big girl panties or you three figure it out. No joke, don’t test

me because this is my ACTUAL child and I’m not dealing with adults behaving helpless.

The most you’ll get from me is an Uber ordered or security called. Don’t

mess with my daughter’s day! ” - From another mom of adults with my own mother who’s never behaved like one

DrunkTides − Nta. Are they crazy? ! That’s YOUR daughter. Plus also his

mother too! I think you should put your foot down more regularly,

considering they think you’ll be okay with focusing on being a daughter instead of a mother

After a decade of putting her mother’s needs first, OP is asking for one day to simply be a mother watching her daughter’s biggest moment.

She made arrangements months in advance, but her family now expects her to return to the role she has always carried.

Some may argue she should compromise, while others believe this is long overdue.

Do you think OP is wrong for holding firm, or is her family taking her sacrifice for granted?
