James Gunn is quite busy carefully crafting his new DCU from the ruins of the former DCEU. And just like his predecessor, Zack Snyder, he is building his new universe with a Superman movie as the foundation. The Guardians of the Galaxy director has caused major ripples among the fan community after revealing his version of the Superman costume last week.
On James Gunn’s Instagram account, the new DC head posted a photo of David Corenswet donning the iconic red-and-blue suit, with an alien invasion soaring in the sky behind. While the costume itself wasn’t bad, it received mixed reviews within the DC community, with many claiming that the suit looks too “baggy” or “AI-generated.
But what also caught the eyes of the audience was the alien invasion in the background. In the photo, a giant eyeball-like spaceship is seen flying and sending a massive purple ray onto Metropolis. Because of the color purple and the peculiar shape of the spaceship, fans believe that it belongs to Brainiac, a major supervillain in DC Comics.
Being a brilliant life form that belongs to a superior alien race, Brainiac has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. With his superior technology and powerful psychic abilities, the antagonist roams the universe to collect different planets and species into his collection, and Earth is one of his most-desired targets. Brainiac is incredibly powerful and intelligent, and has proven time and time again to be a huge trouble for both Superman and the entire Justice League.
Besides, the Brainiac theory also makes sense, since the villain has been linked to be in the upcoming Superman movie for a long time. However, other sources suggest that the villain in the picture could also be Mongul, another Man of Steel villain with superb strength and telekinesis abilities.
However, there’s also a chance that neither Mongul nor Brainiac are the villain we’re talking about. Since Lex Luthor is confirmed to be Superman’s antagonist, it’s possible that James Gunn wants to save both said villains for another movie.
Besides, since Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern is also in the movie, many believe that the culprit of the purple ray is Carol Ferris, aka Star Sapphire, a villain with a complicated relationship with the Hal Jordan version of the Ring Bearer.
Much like Green Lantern, Star Sapphire also uses a ring to launch violet energy projections at will. In the photo, we can also see a faint light of green fighting against the purple ray, which may be Guy Gardner‘s Green Lantern fighting against Star Sapphire’s energy blast.
Though neither of these assumptions has been addressed by DC or James Gunn himself, we only need to wait one more year to find out which villain, Brainiac, Mongul, or Star Sapphire, will appear in Superman alongside Lex Luthor.
