Summary:
Deadpool & Wolverine has officially received an R rating. This comes as no surprise, given Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige’s earlier promises. The film is rated R for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references.”
While both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 were R-rated, Deadpool & Wolverine is the first to be rated R specifically for “gore,” indicating a heightened level of brutality. The rating was announced ahead of the movie‘s theatrical release in July 2024.
This rating is historic as Deadpool & Wolverine becomes the first R-rated film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was anticipated, with Feige addressing the mature rating multiple times.
At CinemaCon in April, he described the movie as “f***ing awesome” and confirmed, “It’s R-rated.” Director Shawn Levy also highlighted that the film lives up to its rating, noting that Marvel Studios provided complete creative freedom.
“We were clear from the beginning,” Levy told Fandango. “We said, ‘The three of us [Levy, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman] are going to stay true to the tone of a Deadpool movie.’ That means we won’t soften the edges. We’ll be bold, funny, and edgy, just as fans expect from Logan and Wade Wilson.” (via EW)
Levy continued, “Every time we anticipated resistance, we received support from Kevin and everyone at Disney. They have trusted us to deliver the version of Deadpool & Wolverine that we believe is best.”
Deadpool and Wolverine: The Ultimate MCU Team-Up
Deadpool & Wolverine promises to deliver intense action and violence, making it unsuitable for the faint-hearted. The film sees Deadpool and Logan team up against a multiversal threat posed by Cassandra Nova, portrayed by Emma Corrin.
The multiverse angle suggests numerous major cameos, with Taylor Swift being one of the most talked-about possibilities.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
