Deadpool & Wolverine’s Villain Explained: Powers, Origins, Relationship With Professor X & More

Summary:

  • The latest trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine has confirmed the movie’s main villain: Cassandra Nova, a powerful telepathic.
  • Cassandra Nova is the evil twin sister of Charles Xavier/Professor X, and wields almost the same abilities as the latter.
  • Nova was killed by Xavier at birth, but survived and found a new host.

The upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to introduce a formidable new villain to the MCU, a familiar character with deep ties to a prominent X-Men member, Professor X. The latest trailer unveils this bald antagonist emerging dramatically from the skull of a colossal Ant-Man, setting a rather ominous tone for her lair.

This villain isn’t acting alone; the trailer also teases the reappearance of characters from the Fox X-Men universe, such as Azazel and Lady Deathstrike, who appear to ally with this mysterious mastermind in a realm known as The Void. While the trailer doesn’t name her, the role is played by The Crown star Emma Corrin. So, what makes her a significant threat to Deadpool’s mission to enlist Wolverine and safeguard the Sacred Timeline?

Deadpool & Wolverine's Villain Explained: Powers, Origins, Relationship With Professor X & More

The villain, confirmed by the trailer, is Cassandra Nova, a genocidal entity with a chilling backstory involving a mass murder on Genosha that annihilated millions of mutants. This plot was recently explored in “X-Men ’97,” but with Mister Sinister being the antagonist instead.

Nova’s brief appearance in the initial “Deadpool & Wolverine” teaser sparked speculation, and now her full reveal aligns closely with her comic book origins. She sports the same stiff collar and long tan coat, matching the iconic look of her “twin,” Charles Xavier.

Cassandra Nova’s origin in the MCU is incredibly dark. She’s essentially the evil twin of Professor Xavier, having tried to kill him while they were both in utero. After being killed by her twin brother instead, she was reborn in another body, bent on revenge. Defined as a demon by Marvel‘s Shi’ar aliens, she embodies a Mummudrai, an astral “shadow self” that every being supposedly has.

In the comics, Mummudrai are parasitic beings born alongside their “twins,” starting life with a fight for survival. Nova, as Xavier’s “twin,” was an exact genetic clone. Xavier, sensing her malevolence, killed her before birth. However, she survived, obtained a new host, and plotted her revenge, which included orchestrating the Genosha massacre through manipulation.

Nova shares many of Professor X’s abilities but with enhanced capabilities, such as telepathy, and telekinesis. She’s also capable of phasing, super-healing, DNA duplication, mental paralysis, mind control, psionic blast, mind transferal, and even astral projection that allows her soul to leave her body at will, similar to The Ancient One‘s techniques.

With her vast and incredibly powerful skillset, Cassandra Nova proves to be a worthy, if not too much, of an opponent for our Deadpool and Wolverine in the threequel. As we already saw in the trailer, she can easily take on Wolverine just by using her telekinesis, so it’s intriguing to see how the X-Men duo will fight against her in the movie just with their regenerative abilities and Adamantium claws.

Judging from the trailer, it appears that Cassandra Nova comes from The Void, so it’s safe to say that the villain was pruned by the TVA at some point. The upcoming movie might explain further on how she escaped from The Void and the TVA’s grasp, while dealing with Alioth at the same time.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released worldwide on July 26, 2024. Therefore, it will be only three months away until we can see the true power of Cassandra Nova on-screen, and how our mutants will take her on.
