Dog-Sitter Volunteers to Help, Then Demands $400 After Owner Leaves the Country

Being away from home can already be stressful, especially when someone else is responsible for a pet you love. A simple favor can become complicated when expectations are unclear, but it becomes much more concerning when new demands appear after the arrangement has already started.

The original poster (OP) was traveling abroad and trusted a neighbor to watch her young dog Ellie for a few days before her usual sitter could take over. Everything seemed fine at first, but shortly after OP arrived overseas, the neighbor began sending confusing messages about extra charges, supplies, and feeling burdened by the arrangement.

Despite OP repeatedly trying to solve the issue calmly, the situation kept escalating in unexpected ways. Now, OP is trying to figure out how to protect her dog’s care while dealing with a sitter who suddenly changed the terms. Scroll down to see how this unusual pet-sitting situation unfolded.

A traveler’s dog-sitter suddenly demands money and makes alarming threats while caring for her puppy abroad

'Out of the country, my dog-sitter is suddenly making various demands'

I’m currently out of the country and away from my younger dog, Ellie, for the very first time ever.

My good friend is watching her the majority of the trip, but a neighbor I’ve known for a while now

from the dog park enthusiastically volunteered to watch her for the initial 4 days while my friend was occupied.

I was very appreciative, and told her that when I’m back I’d treat her to this very nice restaurant she’s mentioned,

and also planned to get her a gift from my trip. It all seemed like a very positive arrangement.

But suddenly right when I land she starts texting me a lot. Giving no specifics, but saying weird things like “I’m ordering supplies to help the situation.

I’ll be sending you an invoice for my time and supplies at the end” and I’m just like “what’s the situation??”.

Her replies are all vague but also weirdly volatile.

I’m extremely calm and agreeable, but somehow everything I say she escalates,

saying things like “you didn’t think about how my life would be affected by this arrangement” and calling me a bad dog owner,

and like some selfish person who forced this on her, which was not the case.

And I’m just constantly like, what can I do — just let me know, and we can figure this out.

But if I push for an actual solution like boarding, she’ll insist that there isn’t any solution and backtracks to saying she’ll keep watching Ellie,

and that I should just enjoy my trip. But then she’ll bounce back to like “but I demand at least $400 for my time and services”

and “if I’m not feeling it, her care will be up to my discretion” which is just like wtf?? Let me get her to someone else then.

And I’m continuing to be extremely pleasant, because she has my dog. But what am I supposed to do??

Even fully de-escalating on my end she’s becoming more unhinged.

Right now I’m trying to find anyone else to go get my dog and then watch them,

but it’s hard with the time change and I don’t have many great options for such a big ask.

And meanwhile I’m trying to placate her all I can even though it feels like she just wants to guilt me into getting a bunch of money we didn’t agree...

So much went into this trip which is a big deal for me, and I’m not even enjoying it due to the stress of this going on.. Thoughts?

Edit: Reason I didn’t go with a boarding service or professional dog sitter: It just felt like an ideal situation I was more comfortable with.

It was literally Ellie’s 6 month birthday while I was gone, and I got her custom birthday pupcakes, all new toys,

and imagining her being with someone she knew, with a dog she regularly played with,

still going to her favorite park and eating cupcakes was the exact ideal situation I put effort into finding.

I wanted that over a stranger or strange new place. Going forward I’m still probably gonna try for that, but just with someone who isn’t crazy.

Update before I sleep: Ellie’s getting rescued from the crazy neighbor.

My friend’s trip actually didn’t happen, so he was able to go get her right away once it hit morning and I was able to get in contact with him.

I could write another 3 paragraphs on the petty drama from just trying to get this exchange to go through, but it isn’t worth it.

Just imagine a dozen more weirdly inflammatory accusatory texts. And her bitching to my friend and him also instantly realizing she’s crazy.

I know it’s dumb, but after Ellie was safe I did reply to one of her tirades with “You’re an unstable person” before ceasing all communication.

After going through a full day not breaking and walking on eggshells.

She flipped out, and when I didn’t reply tried to tattle on me to my friend, who couldn’t give a s__t lol. What a weird, sad, 40 year old woman.

Update 2: A different neighbor reached out because apparently Ellie was given to her for hours, on the one day the crazy neighbor had her.

And I didn’t even know, which is just another weird thing. So in the end she had Ellie for one day, but not even that one day lol.

And yeah she’s trash-talking me, but it seems people are picking up on it being a her issue.

Trust can disappear frighteningly fast when someone who seemed dependable suddenly becomes unpredictable. The worst part is often not the money or inconvenience, but realizing that something precious is temporarily under the control of a person whose behavior no longer feels safe.

In this story, the OP was not simply dealing with a dog-sitter asking for unexpected compensation. The emotional pressure came from being thousands of miles away while someone caring for Ellie began sending vague complaints, demanding hundreds of dollars, criticizing OP’s ownership, and suggesting the dog’s care might depend on her mood.

That imbalance mattered. OP could not freely argue, challenge the demands, or simply walk away because Ellie was still in the neighbor’s possession. Remaining unusually calm therefore looks less like passivity and more like an attempt to protect the dog until another arrangement could be made.

Another perspective is that the neighbor may genuinely have discovered that caring for Ellie required more effort than expected. If so, asking to renegotiate compensation would have been reasonable.

What changed the situation was the combination of unclear complaints, escalating accusations, shifting demands, and resistance whenever OP proposed removing the dog.

A straightforward problem normally invites a solution. Here, every proposed solution seemed to create another conflict, which understandably made OP suspicious that the argument itself had become more important than resolving the care arrangement.

Verywell Mind distinguishes healthy boundaries from manipulation by focusing on purpose and behavior. Boundaries explain what someone personally can or cannot accept, while manipulation attempts to control another person through pressure, punishment, unrealistic demands, or emotional coercion.

The article notes that manipulation can sometimes happen unintentionally, but the central difference is whether someone is protecting their own needs or trying to force another person into compliance.

That distinction fits this situation remarkably well. The neighbor could have said that dog-sitting was harder than anticipated, named the specific difficulties, requested additional payment, and allowed OP to arrange alternative care. Instead, according to OP, she demanded money while simultaneously resisting attempts to transfer Ellie elsewhere.

Once another friend collected the dog, the practical problem disappeared almost immediately. The later revelation that Ellie had apparently been handed to another neighbor without OP’s knowledge only strengthened the concern that communication had broken down badly.

The safest lesson is not that informal dog-sitting arrangements should never happen. It is that goodwill needs an emergency plan. Written expectations, veterinary details, backup caregivers, agreed compensation, and clear permission about transferring care can prevent friendship from becoming leverage.

OP also did something important once Ellie was safe: they stopped negotiating with chaos. Sometimes a conflict cannot be solved by finding better words. The realistic solution is removing the vulnerable party from the situation, documenting what happened, and refusing to recreate the same arrangement again.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

These Redditors urged OP to hire a professional sitter and remove the dog immediately

BigBodiedBugati − At this point, a paid dog sitter would be better. Find someone else to go get your dog.

BayAreaHere − N__case. Aren’t there apps for dog walkers/sitters, find one and send them to her house to retrieve the dog. I’d rather pay them $400 than this person.

Khmakh − At this point, hire an actual dog sitter or ask someone to have the dog boarded. This person will keep doing this.

Delicious_Fall_1203 − Use the app, Rover, and have them go and get your pupper from her.

These commenters suggested asking trusted friends or the vet for emergency help with the dog

Unable_Abroad2524 − My instinct would be to contact your friend who will be watching the dog for the rest of the time.

I understand they may be occupied, but might make an exception for this particular scenario.

PizzaSlingr − Maybe this is out there, but do you have a Vet you usually use?

Maybe call them and ask if anyone there wants a quick side gig til your friend takes over?

IHaveBoxerDogs − I would beg every friend I had to go get my dog. She’s is unhinged. Does she have a partner that might be messaging you

because they don’t like the arrangement? Because this is seriously weird behavior for someone who volunteered to help.

These users saw the sitter’s messages as threatening and advised involving police if necessary

mcindy28 − Try to stay calm while you're away. The woman is a n__case.

Get your Dog and give her the gift you intended but do not pay her any of the demands and maybe have Police on standby once you are back.

EDIT if you have another friend that can get your dog for you even better. Do not trust her.

Time-Minute1897 − “If I’m not feeling it, her care will be up to my discretion” is a threat.

You gotta find someone who will go to your place and pick up the dog, and try to be on the phone with that person when they do so.

This lady doesn’t sound well, especially if this all came out of nowhere. Police honestly aren’t out of the question.

Odd-Preparation-472 − Can you contact the police and ask if they can help, since someone’s threatening your dog and extorting you?

Be clear that you are NOT surrendering the animal, and that you have a plan in place for care in a few days.

Maybe they can take the dog to the pound for a couple days? Not ideal for the doggo, but maybe better than staying with this crazy lady?

Would you ever trust this neighbor with a pet again? And if someone volunteers to pet-sit, is it still worth putting compensation, emergency plans, and boundaries in writing before leaving town?
