Drunk Hotel Guest Demands Wine After Midnight, Then Chugs Olive Oil By Mistake

Hotel night shifts have a way of producing stories that sound too ridiculous to be real. I think alcohol-related arguments are especially unpredictable because once someone has decided they need another drink, common sense can disappear very quickly.

One night auditor shared an encounter with a clearly intoxicated guest who demanded a bottle of wine from the hotel store after alcohol sales had already ended. She insisted her loyalty status should make her an exception, ignored her husband’s attempts to calm her down, and eventually pointed triumphantly at what she believed was a bottle of wine sitting on a shelf.

The employee tried to explain that it was not alcohol at all, but she refused to listen. Moments later, she grabbed the bottle and ran toward the elevator. Scroll down to see why her first sip immediately proved the employee was telling the truth.

'Ma'am, That Isn't a Bottle of Wine'

I think I've mentioned before how we stop selling alcohol in the hotel store at midnight. That does seem to aggravate some guests... mostly the alcoholics.

Well, I had this couple walk into the hotel, and before heading up to their room they decided to come into the hotel's store.

But while the husband's grabbing some water out of the refrigerator, she walks right up the window separating the desk from the store and demands a bottle of wine.

It's at this point that I can tell from her slurred speech and the smell of her breath that she's probably had far too much wine already this evening.

I inform her that unfortunately, I'm unable to sell her wine because it's past hours (it's around 12:45 am).

She says that doesn't matter because she's a super shiny member. I inform her that doesn't change things. She screams that she wants a bottle of wine.

At this point, her husband walks up and tries to calm her down, telling her she had enough at dinner and that she doesn't need any more.

That's when she points to one of the shelves and says in an tone that's a mix between desperation and like she's about to start crying, "But it's right there!"

Now I'm confused, because we don't keep the wine bottles out on the shelves. We don't keep the wine bottles out where guests can even see them.

Unlike the beer, which is kept in the refrigerator all day and night because it needs to be kept cold, keeping the wine out is too much of a risk...

Sure, we understand that a bottle of beer or two might get taken when we're not looking or when the desk is unattended

because we're at the restroom or something, but one beer is $6, it's a risk we're willing to take.

A bottle of wine is $22, those getting stolen will add up fast..

By the way, don't come at me for those prices, I didn't decide them, the management company did. Anyway...

I lean over just enough to see where she's pointing and what she's pointing at. It's not a wine bottle, it's a bottle of -- actually, let's not spoil the...

I quickly tell her that's not wine, it says so on the bottle. She slurs that I'm a liar. And I assure her that I'm not lying.

Her husband intercedes and just asks to pay for the waters, walking around to the desk to pay.

While I'm ringing him up and charging his card, I obviously take my eyes off the wife, so I don't see her go back into the store and grab the...

All I see is her running out of the store. Her husband yells after her but she's halfway to the elevator.

He looks embarrassed and starts apologizing, offering to pay for the "wine".

I tell him it's no problem, but he might want to get to her before she opens that bottle and starts drinking because like I told her earlier,

that's not a bottle of wine, it's a bottle of olive oil. His eyes widen and he takes off.

You see, our sales director thought the store looked too plain, too much like, well, a store. So she went and got some cheap looking things to dress it up.

Small, fun looking statues and knickknacks, one of them being that decorative bottle of olive oil.

And yes, the bottle clearly states right on it, in cute little quasi-cursive letters, "OLIVE OIL".

I look at the security camera by the elevator and realize he's too late. She's already opened the bottle, and started chugging.

He makes it to her just in time to see her start coughing and spitting it back out. From the desk I can hear her screech, "What the f__k!?!"

I can't hear what he says, but I hear scream that she thought the bottle was wine and she needs more.

I see him grip the bridge of his nose and shake his head, telling me that this probably isn't the first time she's done something this embarrassing when already drunk.

He brings the olive oil back and offers to clean the mess, but I tell him I'll take care of it.

Something tells me he's needed more with her than down here.

I emailed the managers what happened, making sure to cc the sales director, and request that the bottle of olive oil be removed from the store, for... safety reasons I...

There is a strange kind of helplessness in watching someone make a decision that everyone around them can already see will end badly. It can be funny from a distance, but for the people standing nearby, the experience often carries embarrassment, frustration, and concern all at once.

In this story, the hotel employee was not simply refusing a late-night wine sale. They were dealing with a guest whose slurred speech, persistence, and apparent intoxication suggested that her judgment was already compromised. The husband seemed to recognize that too, repeatedly trying to redirect her and saying she had already consumed enough.

Yet the woman became fixated on the bottle she believed was wine. Once that belief took hold, the hotel policy, her husband’s warnings, and even the employee explicitly telling her it was olive oil became obstacles rather than useful information.

Most readers understandably focused on the absurd ending: she grabbed a decorative bottle, ran away, and drank olive oil before realizing her mistake. But psychologically, the more revealing moment came earlier. Her repeated insistence that “it’s right there” suggests a narrowed focus on immediate reward.

In that state, the bottle was no longer just an object on a shelf. It represented the thing she wanted, and contradictory information became easier to dismiss. That may also explain why being a high-status hotel member felt relevant to her. Intoxication can amplify entitlement by weakening the mental brakes that normally help people tolerate being told no.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism explains that alcohol interferes with brain systems involved in judgment, attention, impulse control, and decision-making.

As intoxication increases, behavior can become less controlled, while inhibition falls and reckless choices become more likely. Importantly, significant impairment can occur before someone fully recognizes how impaired they are. NIAAA also notes that slurred speech and poorly controlled behavior are common as alcohol consumption increases.

That insight makes this incident feel less like a simple case of someone failing to read a label. Her brain may have been processing desire more strongly than caution.

Once she expected wine, she treated several warnings as interference and acted before verifying what she was holding. The employee therefore made the safer choice by refusing the sale rather than treating persistence as a reason to bend policy.

The funniest part of the story is undeniably the olive oil. The more useful lesson, though, is that obvious intoxication changes what responsible service looks like.

Clear boundaries, calm refusal, and removing confusing alcohol-like displays are practical safeguards. Sometimes preventing one embarrassing incident is less important than preventing the next one from becoming genuinely dangerous.

See what others had to share with OP:

These users saw the behavior as a serious sign of alcohol dependence rather than ordinary drunkenness

CaptainYaoiHands − How much of an a__oholic do you have to be to just grab an unidentified bottle of something from a store

and literally run off with it to pound as fast as you can when you're already stumbling drunk? ???

MazdaValiant − At the risk of being called Captain Obvious, that is a textbook example of a drinking problem.

SkwrlTail − A__oholism is *terrifying*. Some folks will literally do anything for a drink. Here's hoping she gets help.

These Redditors shared bizarre stories of people consuming things without knowing what they actually were

Chillybrew − I've witnessed someone unscrew the sprayer off a bottle of glass cleaner and drink it before the cop could grab it.

To a degree, I feel pity for some of these folks because they've gone beyond rational thought to get alcohol. (35 year firefighter/EMT-I)

nutraxfornerves − I was part of a living history group that set up a small “Old West Saloon” at various outdoor events.

We sold root beer, birch beer, and other soft drinks.

One morning, I opened up and discovered that thieves had broken in the night before (lousy security).

They had opened a couple of bottles of “beer” only to discover that it wasn’t what they thought, I guess, because they left the half-empty bottles.

They did, however, make off with a big jar of pickles.

The pickles were just a prop. The jar was a minimum of 10 years old and was stored in a dusty old shed between events.

I checked the news for a report of a strange case of food poisoning, but there was nothing. I do hope the thieve at least sampled the pickles and Found...

These users joked that the olive oil may have accidentally prevented an even worse drinking episode.

CerebralAccountant − If that bottle of olive oil stopped her from drinking even deeper into a blackout, maybe it isn't such a bad thing to have around?

The sales manager just needs to restock with something cheaper and easier to clean up, like a 750 mL bottle of sparkling water.

ConsistentParking424 − Wife definitely has a problem with alcohol. Cleaning up oil sounds gross and time consuming.

Although I suppose her spitting it out is better than her drinking most of it and then finding out what that much oil does to a digestive system.

These Redditors treated the whole incident as a wild, memorable story despite the underlying problem

NewDrive7639 − I'm so sorry that you met my sister 💔. Just kidding but also not. Great tale!

leicanthrope − Graduation event for several hundred people + open bar + no effort to check if people are even invited.

Several ambulances were called, and more than a few people were wheelchaired out of the ball room.

Don't even get me started on Russian weddings. ..

thetitleofmybook − That does seem to aggravate some guests. .. mostly the alcoholics. nope. true alcoholics plan ahead. she was just an amateur drunk.

Would you remove decorative bottles from a hotel shop after something like this? And at what point should staff stop treating a situation as annoying customer behavior and start treating it as a safety issue?
