Drunk Husband Climbs Into Bed Expecting His Wife, But To His Surprise, It Is Someone Else

A tipsy husband forgot his father-in-law was using their bedroom during a short visit, so he slipped under the covers reached over to cuddle what he assumed was his sleeping wife, and wrapped his arms around the wrong person. His father-in-law, jolted awake, turned and calmly said “Chris???” in the dim light.

The husband panicked, leaped out of bed, tumbled to the floor, and scrambled to pull on his clothes right there while the stunned older man switched on the bedside lamp and stared in disbelief. Now hungover and mortified, he hides upstairs, dreading the inevitable awkward confrontation downstairs with no harm done beyond pure embarrassment

A man’s drunken mix-up led to accidentally spooning his father-in-law.

Not the actual photo.

'I accidentally got into bed with my father in law?'

My father in law is staying with us for a few days. We gave him our room while he's here, it's bigger and we just felt it's the right thing...

Last night he went to bed and my wife and I were downstairs watching TV and drinking.

She went up a while later too and I said I'd be up soon. I was getting pretty tipsy at this point.

As I went upstairs, sleepiness and my tipsy state meant I forgot that my FIL was in our room. I entered the room and got n__ed which is how I...

I saw a figure curled up in bed and got next to it, wrapping my arms around what I thought was my wife to see if she was up to...

He's a light sleeper and turned around immediately saying "Chris???"

Oh my f__king God. I jumped out and fell to the floor. It was dark and for some reason I decided to get dressed there

rather than just run to the guest room where my wife was. I stumbled over my clothes and somehow got them back on.

By this time, he'd got the table lamp on and was just looking at me with a wtf expression.

I said sorry and went to my wife. I didn't wake her. I've just got up this morning

and am typing this in bed with a massive hangover and a father in law who I tried to spoon probably talking s__t about me to my wife downstairs.

I have to go downstairs at some point. Any idea what to do or how to address it?

Meeting the in-laws can feel like stepping into a sitcom, but this takes it to next-level awkward. The core issue boils down to a classic brain glitch: alcohol impairs memory and judgment, leading to autopilot behaviors in familiar settings. The OP forgot the room swap amid tipsiness and sleepiness, mistaking the bed’s occupant for his spouse in the dark. No intent, no creepiness, just a very human error amplified by booze.

From the FIL’s side, the shock must have been real, yet his chill reaction suggests he quickly clocked it as a mistake rather than anything sinister. While opposing views might paint this as careless or boundary-violating, especially with the nudity and spooning involved, but the overwhelming Reddit consensus leans toward “hilarious accident.”

Broadening out, family dynamics often get tested by these momentary blunders, especially around in-laws where politeness and respect are already on high alert.

Alcohol-related forgetfulness isn’t rare. Research shows heavy or even moderate drinking can lead to memory lapses and impaired decision-making, with studies linking higher consumption to brain changes like hippocampal atrophy.

For instance, a longitudinal study found that even moderate alcohol use  tripled odds of certain brain atrophy compared to abstainers. In family settings, these slips can spark temporary shame, but recovery hinges on open communication rather than avoidance.

Psychologist Guy Winch, Ph.D., emphasizes effective apologies in family mishaps: “The primary goal of your apology should be to ease that person’s emotional burden and garner their authentic forgiveness. As a bonus (and an important one), and only if your apology is effective, your own feelings of guilt or regret will ease.”

In this case, a quick, humble chat, maybe with a dash of self-deprecating humor, could turn the incident into a funny family anecdote instead of lingering awkwardness.

Ultimately, neutral advice: Address it head-on soon to clear the air, keep it light if the vibe allows, and use it as a reminder to double-check rooms after drinking.

Families survive way worse. Laughing it off together often strengthens bonds more than pretending it never happened.

See what others had to share with OP:

Some people find the situation hilariously embarrassing and suggest leaning into the humor with playful teasing or jokes.

Alternative_Fox7217 − Walk into the room, kiss your wife, and ask if he wants a morning kiss too after last night.

puffinnbluffin − Now you go put your arm around him at the breakfast table, look him dead in the eye and ask with a slight grin “so how was your...

zigzagman27 − Lean into it. Give him a big hug and peck on the cheek and say good morning tiger

Some people think the OP should just apologize lightly for the mistake and move on, as it was accidental and harmless.

legallymyself − Embarrassing but just apologize and say you went into automatic pilot and forgot he was in your bed.

chez2202 − Apologise for violating the poor man with your unwanted spooning and buy him some flowers as an apology

Some people believe it’s funny enough that the friend will laugh it off, and the OP should expect some light-hearted ribbing.

xDRWR − LOL if he has a sense of humor, I think you’re fine. They may share a few laughs at your expense but it was obvious you made a...

thebearofwisdom − Oh my god this is the kind of embarrassment that is always funny, because zero harm was done on either side, and I’m just dying thinking about this.

Dear lord, I’m so sorry for laughing OP, this is too much for me. I love that he just turned round and was like “Chris?” so chill. Aaaaaahhhh f__k that’s...

Some people react with amusement at the story and express eagerness for an update on what happens next.

[Reddit User] − Dude I'm sorry but that made me laugh so hard.

mamidenel − We are going to need an update for this one after you go downstairs. Thanks.

Some people jokingly exaggerate the severity of the awkward moment while acknowledging it’s not serious.

[Reddit User] − You have to disappear and move to another country to start over. Only way to recover from this. Only kidding but damn that’s gonna be a hell...

This wild mix-up shows how a foggy brain can create epic embarrassment, but owning it with humor and honesty usually saves the day. Do you think the Redditor should play it straight with a simple apology, or lean into the jokes to break the ice? How would you handle facing your in-law after something this cringey?
