Employee Fakes His Way Into A Senior Role, Then Secretly Pays Someone Else To Do His Job

by Leona Pham

Getting a dream job can feel like a second chance, especially when someone is struggling financially.

But sometimes the pressure to survive can push people into choices that create even bigger problems later.

The original poster (OP) was unemployed for eight months and desperate when he applied for a senior data analyst position.

Although he lacked the technical skills listed in the job description, he managed to pass the interview process with the help of AI assistance and secured an $85K salary.

Instead of admitting he was underqualified, OP secretly hired an overseas database engineer to complete his work behind the scenes.

For more than two years, he has maintained the illusion of being highly skilled while privately depending on someone else to do the tasks he was hired for.

Now, despite earning more money and receiving praise at work, OP is trapped between financial security and the fear that everything could collapse.

Man reveals the secret behind his high-paying job after years of hiding how he actually completes his work

Employee Fakes His Way Into A Senior Role, Then Secretly Pays Someone Else To Do His Job
not the actual photo

'I lied on a resume two years ago and now I pay a guy online to do half my job?'

Back in 2024 I was completely broke and desperate after being

unemployed for almost eight months. I applied for a senior data analyst

position at a mid-sized logistics firm. The role required deep expertise in

custom SQL pipeline architectures and automated reporting frameworks

that I frankly had zero experience with. My actual background was basic

Excel and entry-level Python scripts.

During the technical interview process I panicked and used a secondary

screen with ChatGPT to pass the real-time coding prompts. I somehow

landed the job with an 85k salary.

The first two weeks were pure t__ror. I quickly realized I couldn't learn this

stuff fast enough on my own without getting fired instantly. Out of sheer

panic, I posted an anonymous gig on a forum looking for an offshore

database engineer. I found a guy from Eastern Europe who agreed to work

on call.

We set up a system where I forward him my raw task tickets and internal

requirements through an encrypted app. He writes the scripts, sets up the

queries, and fixes my broken code. I pay him around $1,200 a month out of

my paycheck.

It has been over two years now. My manager thinks I am a silent genius who

works fast and never complains. I even got a minor raise last fall. The worst

part is I have almost zero understanding of the actual infrastructure I am

supposed to be maintaining. If this guy ever decides to ghost me or

demanding double the pay, my entire life will collapse overnight.

Every single morning when I log in I feel this disgusting pit in my stomach,

but the money is too good to stop.

Success can sometimes arrive in a way that feels more frightening than failure.

Many people dream of getting a second chance, but when that opportunity comes before they feel ready, it can create a constant fear of being exposed.

In this situation, the OP is not simply struggling with a difficult job. He is trapped between financial survival and a growing sense of dishonesty.

After months of unemployment, the job represented stability and relief, but instead of admitting he lacked the required skills, he built a system that allowed someone else to perform the core responsibilities.

The income solved an immediate crisis, yet the emotional cost has been enormous.

Every paycheck is now connected to anxiety because he knows his professional identity does not match his actual abilities.

A different perspective is that this situation is more complicated than simply labeling the OP as lazy or dishonest.

Many people experience “impostor syndrome,” especially when they suddenly enter a role that feels beyond their current abilities.

The fear of being discovered can push people into unhealthy decisions.

However, there is a major difference between needing support while learning and outsourcing the very work a person was hired to perform.

The first can be growth; the second prevents growth from ever happening.

This insight helps explain why the OP feels trapped.

His fear likely started from a real place: he needed income, he felt unprepared, and he was afraid of losing another opportunity.

But instead of using the role as motivation to develop his skills, he created a safety net that removed the pressure to improve.

Over time, that safety net became a cage.

The practical solution is not necessarily quitting immediately.

Walking away from a stable income without a plan could create another crisis.

However, continuing indefinitely with no understanding of the work is risky for both the OP and the company that trusts him.

A healthier path would involve gradually rebuilding his own skills, taking courses, studying the systems he manages, and reducing dependence on outside assistance.

The biggest danger is not that his secret will eventually be discovered.

It is that two years from now he may still be in the same position, with more money but no more confidence.

A career is not only about keeping a job; it is about becoming someone who can genuinely stand behind the work they do.

Here’s the input from the Reddit crowd:

These commenters suggested turning the situation into management or entrepreneurship by using coordination skills

colofire − Pivot to management

giraloco − Quit before they find out and start an outsourcing firm. That's your skill.

These commenters criticized the lack of self-learning and urged gaining basic job skills immediately

stiffkick80 − 2 years and you haven’t even tried to teach yourself how to do

it yourself? What are you doing while this other person does your work for

you? Find online courses or a boot camp or something and at least learn

the fundamentals.

Spice_the_TrashPanda − Dude, you can learn SQL in less than a month.

There are courses on the app store, tutorials on Youtube, even good old-

fashioned books at the library. .. why haven't you spent any time actually

learning how to do your job?

HazelTheRah − Wait, you've done this for two years and have no better

understanding of the job? You don't even do half your job, what do you do

all day? Why not take courses? This has some major legal implications.

You're lazy and it's gonna bite you.

These commenters warned that outsourcing company work creates serious security, legal, and employment risks

RandomiseUsr0 − Utter security risk

redzzzaw − If your company finds out or he reports you, you can get sued.

Redzimon − Oh boy.... You're gonna get sued

These commenters compared the situation to a fragile setup that could collapse suddenly without preparation

Ok-Plum8965 − I knew a guy who did this for like six months until his secret

weapon took a better full time gig and gave him 3 days notice. the panic in

his voice when he called me was something else you're basically building a

house of cards on a trampoline. the longer it goes the worse the fallout will

be if it ever collapses

brentwoodbreeder − I would suggest you took a break before everything

falls apart. I always believe in karma. It has his own way. Either you start

learning and do it yourself or karma will do its own job . Either way, it’s a genius move.

ergonomic_logic − $85k with $1,200 a month going to someone else? ! This

is a massive blow to your paycheck; you're not making enough to be doing

this. I know you're not asking for advice but if it's been two years and

you've not picked up on it, why aren't you looking for a better paying job

doing what you actually do know how to do?

You can use aspects of what you do here on the resume (the half you do

know well) and finally feel peace that a stranger doesn't just pull the rug

out from under your life. He also is prob over there resentful knowing he's

doing all of this for $1,200 a month and is smart enough to know he could make more.

This is a time-bomb that is going to blow up on you at some point if you

don't get out of it. Best of luck! !

The OP’s story highlights a dangerous gap between landing an opportunity and actually being prepared for it.

After years of struggling to find work, he secured a high-paying position by using outside help, but instead of treating it as a temporary learning bridge, he built his entire career around a hidden dependency.

The money and success may look stable from the outside, but every day comes with fear that one person leaving could expose everything.

Do you think the OP should come clean, start rebuilding his skills quietly, or is continuing this arrangement too risky to justify? Share your thoughts below!
