Family Moves In Rent-Free to Save Money, Then Man Learns They’ve Saved Just $200

Helping family through a rough patch can sound simple in theory, especially when you have extra space and want to give people time to get back on their feet. I think the real strain begins when temporary support starts affecting your finances, your routines, and the feeling that your own home still belongs to you.

One homeowner says that is exactly what happened after his wife’s family of five moved in so they could save for a house. Three months later, their savings had barely grown, while his utility bills, grocery costs, and workload had all increased.

The bigger issue, though, was the growing lack of respect for the home, from messes and open doors to pets soiling belongings and shared spaces.

The OP eventually set a move-out deadline, but his wife thinks he is being unsupportive. Scroll down to see why he is now questioning whether protecting his home makes him the bad guy.

A homeowner struggles with resentment as his wife’s family overstays their welcome and refuses to change

not the actual photo

'AITAH for wanting to kick my family out, even if that means they end up homeless?'

Background: My wife and I purchased our first home a year ago and wanted to make sure we had a guest room for visitors to stay with us.

My wife’s family (5 people) wants to buy a home too but are nowhere near where they need to be to be able to purchase, so they are staying with...

They have been staying with us for 3 months and they have been able to save….$200.

My wife approved this whole situation and is charging $0 for rent.

Meanwhile I am picking up extra shifts at work to bring additional finances in since my water usage has doubled,

my electricity has tripled, and my grocery budget has skyrocketed since they arrived.

I can figure out the finances aspect, but it’s the lack of respect for our home that gets under my skin.

There’s small things like leaving lights on, leaving front/back door open, leaving bathroom door open after pooping.

But then there’s the fact that my nephews treat my loft area exactly like their bedrooms

with dirty clothes either piled up on the floor or spread out onto our couch in the loft.

Their two dogs pee on everything outside, including the grill and my daughter’s toys, one of them poops in the house occasionally.

Just to name some of the issues.

I just feel like I am having to act like I am a guest in my own home, having to change my ways and opinions because it makes them uncomfortable.

Cannot be critical of any situation in my own home.

I have given them until Jan 1st to figure it out but my wife says I’m an a__hole for not supporting them while they are figuring things out.

I have expressed that I will be more lenient if they gave me control of their finances

so that I can control their spending habits and let them stay as long as they need, but I’m still an a__hole apparently for even suggesting that..

So…..am I REALLY the a__hole?

A home is often where people expect to feel the most comfortable, respected, and in control.

Helping family members during a difficult period can be an act of love, but that support can become emotionally exhausting when the people receiving help stop treating it as a temporary privilege. The hardest family conflicts often happen when generosity and personal boundaries collide.

In this situation, the OP’s frustration appears to come from more than increased expenses. The deeper issue is the feeling of losing ownership over the home he worked to create.

He and his wife opened their doors to five relatives with the expectation that the arrangement would help them save money and move toward independence. Instead, after several months, there has been little financial progress, while the OP feels the household responsibilities, costs, and emotional burden have fallen heavily on him.

The emotional dynamic is complicated because both sides may feel justified. The relatives may see the arrangement as family helping family during a difficult stage of life. The wife may feel that asking her relatives to leave would mean abandoning people she loves.

Meanwhile, the OP may feel that his kindness has been interpreted as unlimited permission to ignore household rules. The conflict is not simply about money; it is about whether support still exists when respect disappears.

A different perspective is that people who receive help can sometimes lose awareness of the sacrifices being made for them. When someone is not paying rent or directly seeing increased bills, they may underestimate the impact of their habits.

This does not necessarily mean they intend to take advantage, but dependence can sometimes reduce a person’s motivation to change. The fact that the family saved only $200 during three months suggests the original goal of becoming financially prepared may not be happening.

Family therapists often explain that healthy support requires clear expectations and boundaries. Therapist and author Nedra Glover Tawwab, who specializes in boundaries and relationships, explains that boundaries are not punishments; they are ways to communicate what people need in order to maintain healthy relationships.

She emphasizes that unclear boundaries often lead to resentment because people begin giving more than they can sustainably handle.

This perspective helps explain why the OP feels trapped. He is not only reacting to higher bills. He is reacting to the emotional cost of feeling unable to relax in his own home. When people constantly adjust their behavior to avoid upsetting others, resentment often grows.

The solution is not necessarily removing compassion. Family support can continue, but it needs structure. A realistic plan could include clear financial contributions, household responsibilities, timelines, and mutual agreement between the spouses. Without those boundaries, temporary help can quietly become a permanent arrangement.

The larger lesson is that love does not require someone to sacrifice their own stability indefinitely. A family member can care deeply about relatives while still saying, “This situation is no longer working for my household.” A home should be a place where everyone living there feels respected, including the people who opened the door in the first place.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

These users said January is far too long and OP should make them leave much sooner

Electrical_Angle_701 − Jan 1 is waaaaaaay too long. You are wildly underreacting.

Top-Bit85 − They are there to save money, which they are not doing. Why? Do they work or do they think savings just fall from heaven?

Time to get them moving. January 1 is months away. Why should you support them all?

Middle_Care978 − Until January 1 (if you’re lucky) is a longgggg time to financially support rude people and simultaneously give up your own peace and stability.

Grow a backbone, dude. NTA but you would be the a__hole to yourself to let this go on.

AngryPrincessWarrior − They aren’t saving money- they’re stealing it from you along with your peace. NTA Give them 30 days.

Gtfo And your wife can get a damned job and support them if she wants. But not at yalls house.

Asking to control their finances is just stupid. Drop that and just get them out

Rulebreaker15 − NTA They are never leaving. They aren’t even pretending to try to save money to leave.

The fact that your are funding all of their living expenses and they only saved $200 is laughable.

You have a wife problem, not an in law problem. Don’t wait until January.

These Redditors argued OP has a serious wife problem because she keeps enabling her family

Glittering_Wheel_226 − You have a way bigger wife issue. She brought in her feral family at 0 rent and you have zero way to get them out.

Any attempt can and will be shut down by her because "family"

Boomhauer_Jeff − NTA. Your wife is manipulating you to be a doormat.

Intelligent_Read_697 − NTA but you need to be clear with your wife on a timeline for their stay,

what additional responsibilities and cost you are taking on, set clear expectations from her on

what she is doing and then go down the list of issues you have shared with her and get a resolution.

If she cant offer one, then she has no plans either meaning its about time you start cutting your losses.

Chances are they don't plan to leave and your spouse also knows it.

These commenters felt the disrespect alone was enough reason to kick the relatives out

Particular_Plum_1458 − I'd kick them out, although if it was me I'd never have let they stay to stay with😂. NTA imo. Respect other people's stuff.

CozyCookie72 − Whose name is on the lease? Tell your wife to start working or leave them all NTA

Was the January deadline more than fair, or should the relatives have been given additional time? Was asking to control their finances a reasonable accountability measure, or did that cross another boundary? And should the wife have shared more responsibility for making the arrangement work? Share the verdict below.
