German Tourist Files Three Lawsuits After NYC Trip, But Judges Quickly Shut Them Down

Traveling to another country often comes with unexpected challenges, but sometimes frustration can lead people to take things much further than anyone expects.

In 2024, a German tourist visiting New York City became involved in a series of unusual legal battles after several disappointing experiences during his trip.

After eating extremely spicy salsa at a popular taco restaurant, struggling to access WiFi at a Walmart because he lacked a US phone number, and witnessing an assault in Times Square, he filed three separate lawsuits seeking millions of dollars in compensation.

However, each case faced major legal obstacles. Judges ruled that some problems were caused by his own choices, while others did not meet the requirements for legal claims.

The unusual lawsuits quickly attracted attention as examples of how personal frustration does not always translate into a successful court case.

'I am visiting America, I am entitled to perfection or $20 million from lawsuits. It is the American Way!?'

2024. A German tourist visited New York City, and quickly filed three pro se

lawsuits to compensate him for his miserable time.

1. He visited Los Tacos No 1 in Times Square. Asking no questions, seeking

no clarification and being well aware of his heat wimp certification

slathered on some salsa and immediately regretted his decision. He sued

for $100,000 on the grounds that the staff made bo effort to warn him of

how spicy it was.

The US District court judge ruled against him saying that since he knew he

couldn't handle spicy it was on him to ask the staff rather than just grab a

salsa at random and digging in. The judge had a brief bit of fame over his

observation "when it comes to salsa, the spice is often the point."

2. He visited a WalMart in New Jersey and wanted to connect to the store's

WiFi. The authentication required a US telephone number, which as a

German tourist he did not have. When they did not give him what he

wanted he sued for $10,000,000 for severe emotional distress and

discrimination against international phone numbers.

The judge said lol, no, Title VI / civil right laws do not define international

phone numbers as a protected class.

3. While in Times Square he saw two men beating up a homeless guy and he

called the police. By the time they arrived the thugs were gone and the

cops declined to take a formal statement. He sued for $10,000,000 alleging

flashbacks, ptsd, and insomnia.

The full weight of the NYPD/city legal minds responded to his complaint,

and upon receiving it he immediately dropped his lawsuit and presumably

returned to being a part time law student in Germany.

Travel often comes with unexpected challenges.

A different culture, unfamiliar systems, and small inconveniences can make people feel overwhelmed, especially when they are far from home.

However, there is a difference between experiencing frustration and believing every unpleasant experience must have someone else to blame.

This story highlights how personal responsibility and expectations can shape the way people react when things do not go as planned.

The OP’s examples show a pattern where ordinary travel difficulties were interpreted as serious personal wrongs.

A spicy salsa became a failure to warn, a WiFi requirement became discrimination, and a distressing public incident became the basis for a lawsuit.

The emotional factor behind these reactions may be a feeling of losing control.

When someone enters an unfamiliar environment, they may expect businesses, authorities, or strangers to guide them through every situation. When that expectation is not met, frustration can turn into anger and a search for accountability.

A different perspective is that tourists and locals often have different assumptions about responsibility.

Visitors may expect more assistance because they are unfamiliar with local customs, while businesses generally expect customers to ask questions and make informed choices.

The challenge is finding the balance between reasonable accommodation and personal responsibility.

A restaurant cannot predict every customer’s tolerance for spice, and a store’s technology system may have limitations that are unrelated to someone’s identity.

This perspective helps explain why small problems can sometimes escalate dramatically.

A person who thinks, “This situation is annoying but manageable,” is likely to respond very differently from someone who thinks, “Someone has wronged me and must compensate me.”

The second mindset can transform everyday frustrations into major conflicts.

That does not mean people should never seek accountability.

Businesses and institutions can make mistakes, and genuine harm deserves attention.

However, meaningful complaints usually involve situations where someone failed to meet a reasonable responsibility, not simply situations where reality did not match personal expectations.

The broader lesson is that navigating the world requires both rights and responsibilities.

People deserve fair treatment, but they also have a role in asking questions, understanding situations, and managing reasonable risks.

Sometimes the most valuable travel lesson is not about winning a dispute; it is learning how to adapt when the world does not operate exactly the way we expected.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These commenters mocked the absurdity of the lawsuit, using humor and sarcasm to highlight how unreasonable the claims appeared

Aggressive_Cup8452 − No slip and fall? Amateur..

Fardelismyname − What about: The rats no longer drag pizza. It appears

that because they are now counting their macros they are dragging quest

bars which is quite dull. The subway was pleasantly cool. The addition of air

conditioning has ruined NY’s arm pit soup smell. No one told me to go f

myself. Where’s the charm?

These commenters criticized the person for allegedly misunderstanding the U.S. legal system

Alicam123 − I hope his visa was revoked, I wouldn’t want him to visit the uk

as he would give us too much trouble. Can we ban him even if he has never

visited the uk? Did the us court sue him back for wasting the judges and

courts time? And for harassment of us citizens?

GoodGravyMsDazy592 − Yeah, someone heard how easy it is to sue in

America and thought he'd get rich quick. Dummy.

annieselkie − In germany there is a stereotype that you can sue and win

more easily and larger sums in the US than in germany. Thats definitly true.

But it doesnt mean that you win when you do stupid s__t and sue or sue

without any evidence and any wrongdoing on the other side.

These commenters focused on the irony of someone connected to legal studies making what they considered poor legal decisions

Glittering_Shift3261 − …. pert time law student…he really needs to rethink his future 🤣

Lady-Of-Renville-202 − Pro se "in proper person" mfers are the worst even

when they're from here. As soon as I see that phrase, I know the suit is

getting dismissed. There's only one reason a lawyer isn't taking the case if

you've got the money, but these people are so delulu, they think they're

special. Don't even get me started on the "sovereign citizens".

\[Separating the legit pro se people that have valid suits that simply can't

afford counsel\]

These commenters used cultural humor

AutumnLovingLibra − Zum Fremdschämen lol. For what it's worth, I'm sorry

the people had to deal with these bogus charges.

Berliner1220 − This is the most German thing I’ve ever read.

ca_nucklehead − He just wanted to fast track and learn the murican way.

The OP described a tourist whose New York trip apparently turned into a series of legal battles after a few frustrating experiences.

From blaming a restaurant for unexpected salsa heat, to claiming discrimination over a store’s WiFi requirements, and later seeking compensation after witnessing a street incident, each lawsuit was quickly challenged or abandoned.

The stories highlight how misunderstandings, personal responsibility, and unrealistic expectations can collide when someone tries to turn every bad experience into a legal claim.

Do you think these lawsuits were justified attempts to seek accountability, or examples of taking everyday inconveniences too far?
