A teen at a funeral reception, hungry and hurting from braces, finally grabs soft food only for Grandma to snatch the plate for her new favorite grandkid. The 16-year-old feels the sting of blatant favoritism amid the family’s grief.

Days later, the Redditor unleashes a sharp, petty comeback that embarrasses Grandma in front of everyone. Online folks cheer the clever revenge, debating if it went too far in this tense family showdown.

Granddaughter goes “I forgot you were my grandma” as a payback for her grandma’s behavior.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for saying “sorry I forgot you were my grandma” to my grandma?'

Hi, This happened fairly recently but I was told I was an a__hole so I wanted a neutral opinion.

Context, I (16f) have always been the only grandchildren along with my (17f) sister. Because of this our grandparents spent a lot of time with us.

Recently however my uncle and aunt had 2 kids. (toddlers atm) now on to the story. Recently a close cousin of ours passed away.

Her funeral was 2 days after my birthday and 1 day after an orthodontist appointment of mine.

This orthodontist appointment made it so it hurt to eat any food that wasn’t soft.

(Relevant later) anyway we went to the funeral and after that to the burial.

Some of my grandma's family was buried there and so she asked me and my family to look for them and take photos of their graves for her.

We did but this took us about 1 1/2 hours so. When we finally got to the celebration of life the food was not only cold but almost all gone,

now my uncle and his oldest toddler were with us at the cemetery too so they arrived at the celebration of life with us.

It’s also worth mentioning I hadn't really eaten anything all day except some snacks.

So being that it was 2:00 I was hungry. So I got food that was easy to tear apart and went to sit down.

My grandma had my uncle's toddler and all of a sudden started taking my food to give to him. Mind you I told her I couldn’t eat much because my...

Well she ended up giving all the food I could eat to my baby cousin leaving me hungry.

When I got upset my grandma said “Sorry I forget you’re my granddaughter.” I won’t lie that hurt and I didn’t talk to her for the rest of the day.

Anyway, we were at my uncle’s house two days after and she asked me to do something for her

and in my genius moment I said “okay first name I can do that”

when she stared at me in confusion I finally said “oh sorry I forgot you were my grandma.”

In front of one of my aunts and my grandpa (not her husband) I could tell she tried to laugh it off but it bothered her.

I was told by my aunt I should apologize because I needed to be respectful

and that wasn’t but I still haven’t apologized and don’t plan to unless I really am in the wrong.

So Reddit, AITA?

Edit: hi I saw some people were confused so let me add some more information.

1 Me and my grandma were really close when I was younger

2 After I got food I wasn’t able to get anymore the kitchen staff was cleaning up by time we got there

3 The toddlers parents did have food

4 Neither me or my grandma said what we said in a dead serious voice. We both had a sort of laugh-y tone.

5 I’m not sure why she said it, as some of you said it was random.

Me personally I felt like she went overboard with a joke bc to me saying that isn’t okay

6 We both said this in front of people, it wasn't just me.

7 My grandma isn’t that old (early 50’s) she doesn’t have dementia.

8 This was at my moms cousins funeral they were an adult we were 2nd cousins.

9 I do have a good family and me and my grandma just haven’t talked about this since That should be it let me know if I missed anything.

Sometimes, your jokes could go a little too far, you end up hurting the ones that you love without being aware of it. As it happened to a grandma and her granddaughter in this Reddit story.

Our teen hero, fresh from graveyard detective duty for Grandma, finally scores a plate of chewable goodies, only for it to vanish into toddler territory. Yet grandma’s quip is a casual “Sorry I forgot you’re my granddaughter.” Cue the record scratch.

Flip the script, though: Grandma’s in early 50s prime, no dementia excuses here, and she’s juggling fresh toddlers who probably rule her world like tiny dictators.

Maybe she saw the kiddo’s puppy eyes and autopilot-kicked in, thinking “family first!” But prioritizing a toddler over a helpful, hurting teen? That’s favoritism with a side of fries, cold ones.

The teen’s retaliation two days later, calling Grandma by first name and echoing the forgetfulness jab, was pure mirror medicine. Satirical? Sure. Disrespectful? Debatable. It landed in front of aunts and grandpas, amplifying the awkwardness even more.

This micro-drama spotlights a macro mess: shifting family dynamics when new babies crash the grandparent party. Suddenly, the “only grandkids” club loses its exclusivity, breeding resentment faster than rabbits.

A 2023 study from the American Psychological Association notes that 68% of adolescents report feeling displaced by younger siblings or cousins, often leading to snarky outbursts as coping mechanisms. It’s not just petty, it’s human.

Relationship expert Dr. John Gottman has found that if partners display contempt toward each other, which commonly includes making sarcastic remarks, their odds of divorce rise dramatically.

Here, the ‘joke’ bombed because it dismissed the teen’s pain; the comeback highlighted that mutual respect isn’t age-gated.

Neutral fix? Grandma could own the favoritism slip with a heartfelt “I messed up, you’re still my girl,” maybe pairing it with a soft-food care package.

Teen apologizes for the public sting, but stands firm on boundaries. Therapy’s overkill, but a family chat over ice cream could rebuild bridges.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

Some assert the grandmother’s comment was rude and deserved the comeback.

GothPenguin − NTA-Of all the responses she could have given you after taking your food she went for the one that was the worst.

I’m so sorry and as for respecting her it’s a two way street.

TRACYOLIVIA14 − NTA You gave your granny just the medicine she needed.

Just because they are older doesn't make them right and the whole BS about respect.

No you have to earn respect you don't just get it. Granny clearly was in the wrong here.

She should apologize to you or at least tell you she understand why her comment hurt you.

tatasz − NTA If she can forget you are her grandchild, you can forget she is your grandmother.

Others emphasize respect is mutual and not age-based.

Magic_butter358 − NTA She took the food out of what she thought was a stranger's plate?!

Also it said that the food was cold when you got back which means they had plenty of time to look for food before you even got back.

Not only that but you were helping her to do stuff, she should at least have saved you food for later.

mynamecouldbesam − NTA You don't automatically owe her more respect than she owes you just because she's older.

Hopefully now she understands how hurtful her words were.

Remarkable_Buyer4625 − NTA - First, never apologize when you are not sorry. It’s a waste of time and energy for everyone involved.

Second, your response was actually very appropriate. You got your point across and taught her a lesson without being disrespectful.

Your aunt just wants you to apologize because she was raised with the old-school belief that children must blindly tolerate being crappy behavior from their elders.

Many question the grandmother’s confusing apology for its logic.

elliptical-wing − INFO When I got upset my grandma said “Sorry I forget you’re my granddaughter. This doesn't make much sense.

What has you being, or not being (in her head momentarily), her granddaughter got to do with taking your food?

If you weren't her granddaughter, she'd happily take food from a another guest's plate? It makes no sense to me.

It's such a nonsensical statement and more like something a dementia sufferer would say.

RepulsiveDig9091 − NTA, ask your aunt if you should give a similar non-apology as the one given by your grandma.

For example, Sorry I forgot you're my elder and spoke something disrespectful.

midlifecrisi − NTA. Does your granny think it's okay to steal food off people's plates if they aren't family?

Dettmarp − Info: am I missing something? I genuinely don't understand how the "sorry, I forgot you're my granddaughter" comment makes any sense at all.

In the context of the story, I don't understand how this comment fits in, or how it's offensive; to me it's just confusing.

Do you think the teen’s ultimatum was fair given the lifelong grandma bond at stake, or did they overplay their hand with an audience?

How would you juggle being the “forgotten” sibling’s keeper in this mess? Share your hot takes ,we’re all ears!
