Grandmother Gives Four-Month-Old Baby Donut Frosting Without Asking, Leaving Mom Furious

First milestones with a baby can feel surprisingly emotional, especially when parents have been waiting to experience them together. That is why even a tiny taste of food can become a much bigger issue when someone else decides to introduce it without asking.

One new mother shared how her mother-in-law had been unusually focused on feeding her four-month-old baby since before he was born. Despite repeated reminders that the parents were following their pediatrician’s guidance, the grandmother continued suggesting early feeding ideas.

Then, during a family breakfast, the mother came downstairs and noticed something on her baby’s chin. She soon learned that her MIL had given him a taste of chocolate frosting while she was away.

Her husband thinks the reaction is bigger than the incident itself, but she feels an important boundary was crossed. Scroll down to see why she is questioning whether she overreacted.

A new mother is furious after her mother-in-law secretly gives her 4-month-old baby frosting

'MIL gave 4 month old solids for the first time'

Hi everyone! My husband and I have the absolute sweetest 4 month old. Literally could not have asked for a better baby.

My MIL has been obsessed with the idea of feeding our baby since before he was even born.

She would constantly tell us how she can’t wait until he can have eggs one day (not sure what her obsession is with this food in particular).

She also constantly tells us we should be putting rice cereal in his milk at night to sleep longer even though I’ve told her countless times

that our pediatrician does not recommend it. She is just so heavily focused on what he’s eating for some weird reason.

Well the other day we had them over for breakfast and my husband picked up a box of donuts and coffee.

I had gone upstairs to shower and when I came down everyone was in the living room hanging out.

I go to grab my baby and notice there is brown stuff on his chin.

I ask my husband if the baby could have grabbed anything since he loves putting everything in his mouth right now

and my MIL says “oh, I gave him a little taste of frosting from my donut.

He kept trying to grab it, I think he is ready for solids!” & I about lost it. I started crying because I was so angry & just stormed off.

I later talked to my husband about how upset I was & he is trying to tell me it’s not a big deal.

How our baby will be starting solids in 2 months anyways & how it’s probably fine.

He said when he was little his mom started solids early & he turned out fine.

I think I just need advice because I have no idea what to do or think.

I feel like maybe I am overreacting but chocolate frosting can’t be good for a child that small.

I am just so upset she took him trying his first sweets away from me.

Some parenting moments feel important precisely because they happen only once. A baby’s first taste of food may seem trivial to another adult, but to new parents it can represent months of anticipation, developmental readiness, and the beginning of a new stage. That helps explain why this mother cried.

She was not simply upset about frosting. Her mother-in-law made a parenting decision she had repeatedly signaled she wanted to control herself.

The husband’s reaction probably deepened that hurt. Saying the baby will eat solids eventually misses the distinction between eventually and without parental permission today.

His mother had already pushed rice cereal despite being told their pediatrician advised against it, so the frosting was not occurring in isolation. It likely felt like confirmation that repeated “no” answers were being treated as temporary obstacles rather than decisions.

There is also a useful perspective that keeps the situation proportional. A tiny taste of frosting does not automatically mean the baby has been harmed. The bigger concern is that Grandma decided she could determine readiness because the baby reached for food.

Current CDC guidance says complementary foods are generally introduced at about six months, when babies show developmental signs such as head control, sitting with support, swallowing food rather than pushing it out, and bringing objects toward their mouths. Simply grabbing at something is only one possible readiness sign.

The medical guidance also supports the parents’ earlier position. The CDC states that putting cereal or other solid food in a bottle does not make babies sleep longer and may increase choking risk.

It also recommends avoiding added sugars for infants and young children, making donut frosting a poor choice for an intentional first food even once complementary feeding begins.

That context makes this less about whether Grandma chose a catastrophically dangerous food and more about parental trust. Grandparents often bring experience from another generation, but recommendations change, and experience does not override the parents’ pediatrician or their right to decide when and how feeding begins.

The parents would benefit from agreeing on one rule together: nobody gives the baby food, medicine, or supplements without asking first. The husband especially needs to communicate that boundary to his mother so it does not become a daughter-in-law versus mother-in-law dispute.

The mother is not overreacting simply because she valued this first. She can acknowledge that one lick is unlikely to define her child’s feeding journey while still insisting that future milestones belong to the parents unless they explicitly choose to share them.

Here’s the comments of Reddit users:

These Redditors said the real issue was MIL overriding the parents’ decisions and crossing a clear boundary

Separate_Novel_5253 − It's not about the frosting, it's about the boundary being crossed. Your baby, your decisions.

She raised her kid the way she wanted to, you get to raise your baby the way you want to.

Stock-Cell1556 − Your husband needs to understand that this isn't really about whether the frosting is going to be harmful to your child,

it's about your MIL making decisions for your baby without consulting with you. I'd insist on taking a break from her for a while.

She's going to keep doing this unless you put your foot down. And you husband needs to back you up!

These commenters blamed the husband for minimizing the situation instead of supporting his partner

SuperSlugSister − You have a husband problem.

Even if he doesn’t realize that his mom is boundary stomping, he should realize that you’re upset and defend you.

Miserable_Adagio_320 − Your husband is an i__ot who needs to stand up for his child.

Also feeding or giving a child that small things without parental knowledge or ok is a huge problem

Capital-Emu-2804 − Your husband is an i__ot.

These users warned that giving an infant unapproved food can create choking, allergy, and other safety risks

ImColdandImTired − This is a huge deal! Firsts are for Mom and Dad, number one. Two, chocolate allergies exist.

And frosting often contains dairy and who knows what additives. That’s why initial solids are given as single ingredient foods.

Three, solids don’t start until baby can sit upright alone with good head control,

unless instructed to do so earlier by your pediatrician for specific health reasons.

Four, super concentrated sugars can cause digestive upset.

Five, babies get oral herpes and the bacteria that causes tooth decay from sharing food with adults.

She shouldn’t be giving him anything she’s been eating. I would be absolutely livid,

and not let her out of my sight around my baby for a long time. Nor would I let her within arms reach with food.

My child was already eating solids at six months old when my MIL tried to stuff a piece of cream puff in his mouth.

Fortunately, I caught her and intercepted it. She was mad. I reminded her that he was dairy intolerant.

She said, “well I wasn’t giving him ~~anything she’s~~ any of the cream.”

Next morning, she was eating toast with jelly, and some of the jelly dripped (I hope from the unbitten toast and not her mouth) onto her plate.

She swiped a finger I had seen her lick through the jelly and reached for my son’s mouth.

Fortunately husband was sitting there, and went “Absolutely not! ” I was trying not to puke.

From then on, she didn’t get to sit next to baby at mealtimes. I don’t understand the obsession with pushing inappropriate solids onto a small infant.

Even worse, droppings from your fingers or plate. 🤢

Accomplished-Pay7386 − Physician here Please tell your whole family she put your child in extreme danger:

Babies should wait until about 6 months old to eat solid food because their digestive and nervous systems are not ready to process it safely before then.

Major groups like the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend waiting for several important reasons:

Immature Digestion Open gut: Babies under 4 to 6 months have a developing digestive tract that lets intact proteins and germs pass through easily.

This increases the risk of allergies and infections.

Missing enzymes: Young infants do not produce enough of the specific digestive enzymes needed to break down complex nutrients in solid foods.

Physical Development and SafetyTongue-thrust reflex: Babies are born with an automatic reflex that pushes their tongue forward against

anything that enters their mouth, which helps prevent choking on foreign objects but makes swallowing solids nearly impossible.

Head and core strength: Eating safely requires the ability to hold the head steady and sit upright.

Younger babies lack the muscle control to swallow solid textures safely without choking.

Shiner5132 − As a mom with a child with a number of severe food allergies (including a life-threatening allergic reaction to eggs)

I am furious on your behalf. My food allergy child is my third.

I am not a new mom, I was shocked when my baby had eggs for the first time and required emergent care.

Taking away a child’s first anything is disrespectful to the mom but also I promise you

your mother-in-law does not have a plan for what will happen if your baby has allergic reaction. Draw a very hard line in the sand now.

These Redditors stressed that grandparents already had their parenting “firsts” and should leave the baby’s milestones to the parents.

Constant_Flight_2525 − So tell her just exactly that.

She has her firsts with her child/children and your babies firsts are for you and your husband EXCLUSIVELY.

You should have said as much while you were pregnant and she kept bringing it up.

Fair_Steak_7778 − Men don’t understand. Cz they’re not primary care givers.

They don’t understand how robbed a mother feels when the MIL or her own mom try to do stuff that the baby’s mother is supposed to do.

They think “oh the baby is fine, Don’t worry , it’ll all good” - no it’s not.

She has had her time with her kids, i dont care if she didn’t get to enjoy it or she didn’t have enough space for it. Thats on her, and...

This is my kid and i will do it how i see fit, if you have a problem, go sit with your mom then.

Was the mother justified in treating the frosting as a serious boundary violation, or was her reaction bigger than the incident warranted? Share the verdict below.
