Groom Kicks Sister-In-Law Out After She Shows Up In White To Upstage The Bride

Every wedding has at least one guest who tests your patience. But few take things as far as showing up in a color that’s supposed to be reserved for the bride.

One groom found himself facing exactly that nightmare when his wife’s sister arrived dressed in white, despite a long history of jealousy and drama between them. With emotions running high and the bride in tears, he made a snap decision that ended up shocking the entire family.

A groom has his mom remove his white-wearing, spotlight-stealing SIL from the wedding to protect his crying bride

'AITA For Kicking My Sister-in-law Out of My Wedding?'

So my now sister-in-law has been a pain in my now wifes' a** for a very long time. She is always trying to "one up" her in every way possible.

I have also heard a lot of stories where she has done some pretty messed up stuff to my wife,

including skinny dipping with her ex while my wife and him were still together, lying and saying that I liked her first (in highschool)

which is completely untrue just to break us up, and turning my wifes family against her just because she brought these things up at a cookout once.

These are just a few of many. Now on Saturday was our wedding and my sister-in-law wanted to wear the same color dress as the bridesmaids

and after a long argument my wife just said she doesn't care anymore.

I was in the groomsroom and I started hearing things like "why would she do that?" and "She's in white!"

so I ask my mother what is going on and she explains to me that my sister-in-law is wearing white to her own sisters wedding.

My mother then tells me that my wife is crying her eyes out so I tell my mother to just kick her out, which she does.

My wifes entire family was furious at my mother and me the entire wedding but it goes pretty smoothly.

I would like to mention that we knew something was up and we later found out through Facebook

that my sister-in-laws boyfriend proposed to her at a restaurant later that night.

If you ask me they were obviously planning on doing that at the wedding just to spite my wife like usual.

So AITA for kicking her out to save my wife from crying while walking down the aisle?

OP later edited the post

EDIT: I would just like to thank everyone for commenting and showing support for my wife!

She will definitely enjoy reading all of these comments from you wonderful people!

I cannot reply to all of the comments as I’m at work and I apologize and I will try my best when I get off.

Also thank you for the rewards! I’ve never gotten rewards before so it did make my night for sure!

UPDATE My SIL is now texting my wife for the first time since the wedding

and she is saying things like she hopes my wife gets a reality check and realizes what she did wrong...

Also saying that we embarrassed her in front of the whole family and how horrible of people we are.

Weddings are meant to be joyful celebrations, but when family dynamics are strained, conflicts can arise that threaten the happiness of the couple.

In this story, the bride’s sister-in-law deliberately wore white to upstage the bride and appeared to have planned an engagement announcement at the wedding itself, which would have drawn attention away from the newlyweds.

This type of behavior, when intentional, crosses social and cultural boundaries, as the color white is traditionally reserved for the bride in Western weddings.

According to wedding etiquette experts, guests who deliberately seek to overshadow the couple or disrupt their day are considered to be violating fundamental norms of respect and decorum (The Knot).

The husband in this scenario acted to protect his wife’s emotional well-being. He intervened when he saw that his wife was distressed and directed his mother to remove the disruptive guest from the ceremony.

Experts in relationship counseling often note that advocacy for a partner’s emotional safety is a critical aspect of marital support (Psychology Today). By prioritizing his wife’s needs and mitigating a potentially humiliating situation, he helped preserve the significance of the wedding day and prevented further emotional harm.

Family conflict can be particularly complicated when other relatives attempt to justify or excuse harmful behavior. The removal of the sister-in-law, while possibly controversial among other family members, aligns with the couple’s right to establish boundaries for their wedding.

Maintaining these boundaries is a reasonable exercise of agency, especially when a guest’s actions are intended to harm or overshadow the celebratory event.

Social psychologists emphasize that setting firm boundaries in situations where a third party is acting manipulatively or disruptively is both ethical and protective (American Psychological Association).

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Redditors praised the groom for protecting his wife

XercinVex − NTA - trash SIL did NOT deserve a chance to steal the show

dellaevaine − NTA. She's trash and you were protecting your wife.

Funkystepz − NTA it’s not about her. Good job for getting your wife’s back

This group celebrated OP’s decisive action, calling it justified and heroic

Petitechonk − Absolutely not! OP you probably saved what would have been a rather stressful memory for your wife.

To wear white to a wedding, bad. To wear white specifically to upstage the bride, bad.

To get engaged at a wedding, extra bad and hella tacky Just imagine trying to look back at your wedding photos and NOT be reminded of that behavior!

Your wife has clearly expressed her feelings about all this behavior to you in the past, and you didn't go against her wishes.

Is it a d__k move to evict someone out of a wedding party?

In my opinion, only if they don't deserve it, and SIL most definitely did. NTA OP, and you deserve an award for being your wife's Knight in shining armor!

ScarletDevi69 − NTA - Good job for sticking up to your wife. Do not invite her to any events that you'll be hosting

aribeiro659 − NTA. Honestly the sister and anyone who is saying you shouldn’t have had her removed are the assholes in this story.

These commenters roasted the SIL for her jealousy and audacity

SmartassMouth89 − NTA play stupid games win stupid prizes.

EastLeastCoast − NTA. Good job, human.

dr_frosty_funk − NTA. You did what had to be done what your SIL deserved. YTA because you did not give your SIL much of a hell mate.

I am very happy that you're having a baby. Just dont call that SIL to your baby's shower,

probably she might show up with a baby bump without knowing who the dad would be lol.

Also congrats on your new life.

ForeverInWonderlust − Y-T-A for not "tripping" while wolding a glass of red wine next to your SIL.

And I'm glad you stand up for your wife and had a great day. I suspect your SIL twisted the story she told the family,

because you said they are usually great people and take your and wife's side. And congrats for the baby NTA a million times

madamebeangreen − NTA. At least the trash was taken out before the wedding. This sil sounds toxic. I’d cut her out. Permanently.

violetrosesnyc − You sound like an excellent choice of husband with a spine of steel. NTA

Some weddings end in tears of joy, others, in the removal of a family member in a white dress. OP’s quick action might have saved his wife’s day, but it also ignited a full-blown family feud. Most readers crowned him the hero for protecting his wife from years of petty cruelty, while others couldn’t help but gasp at how far the sister-in-law went to steal the spotlight.

So what do you think? Was OP justified in showing her the door, or should he have let her stay and risked more chaos? And seriously, who wears white to their sister’s wedding? Drop your take in the comments!
