Groom Vanishes Before Wedding, Returns Drunk, And Bride Still Goes Through With It

Wedding planners see plenty of chaos, but I think there is a point where normal pre-wedding stress turns into something no checklist can fix. A missing groom is definitely somewhere near the top of that list.

One former wedding assistant shared the worst ceremony she ever worked after a groom vanished for roughly two weeks before his own wedding. Friends, family, and even the best man apparently had no idea where he was, while the bride still arrived at the venue hoping he would show.

As the ceremony time passed, guests began leaving, relatives argued, and the bride cried while getting ready. Then, long after the wedding should have started, the groom finally appeared in a condition nobody expected. Scroll down to see why the ceremony still went ahead despite everything.

'Groom goes missing 4 weeks before the wedding.'

I was a wedding planner assistant and I have so many stories I could tell, but this is my worst.

It’s so bad it sounds like I’m making it up but I STG this all happened.

I have a groom go MIA 4 weeks (edit 2 weeks) before the wedding. None of his friends or family could get a hold of him.

The only reason I know he’s missing is because we’re trying to get a hold of the couple to iron out last minute details and finalize payment.

The day of the wedding comes and people still haven’t heard from him and have no idea if he’s coming.

I asked his parents, his best man, no one had heard from him. The ceremony was set to start at 10 am.

The bride and bridal party show up at 9 am to finish getting ready. While I’m doing up her corset she’s sobbing and telling me she doesn’t know if he’s...

I have NEVER told a bride this before but after an hour of waiting and her crying I said,

“you know you don’t have to do this, right?” She responded that she still loved him and wanted to.

Guests are leaving. The parents are fighting. At 11:30, the groom shows up, absolutely shitfaced gets angry with the bride for being upset.

They both insist on getting married still.. I help the bride fix her hair and makeup and they got married.

I heard rumors that they got divorced 3 months later.

Edit: The bridal party just had to FINISH getting ready at the venue. Putting their dresses on and some touch ups to hair and makeup.

The officiant was the grooms friend.. Only about 15-20 people showed up to the wedding. Half of which left after 30 minutes.

I did not handle communication with the couple or family prior to the wedding day.

I have no clue what, if anything, was being done about him being missing.

The family made it seem like it isn’t uncommon for him to go on benders. I have no idea what anyone’s thought process was.

I do not know anything about the couple or families. I only handled things the day of.

I’ll also concede that maybe I’m remembering wrong and it was only 2 weeks? Y’all are making me doubt myself.

Another edit: I just texted my mother, who also worked there at the time.

She can’t remember exactly how long he was missing but thinks it may have been 2 weeks.

Few moments are more heartbreaking than watching someone cling to a future that is already showing signs of collapse. The bride arrived at her wedding not knowing whether the groom would appear at all.

She cried while getting dressed, guests began leaving, relatives argued, and the person she was supposed to marry had apparently been unreachable for roughly two weeks. When he finally arrived almost two hours late and heavily intoxicated, she still said she loved him and wanted to continue. That detail makes the story less ridiculous than painfully human.

Emotionally, the bride was not simply deciding whether a drunk groom deserved forgiveness. She was standing inside an event that already contained enormous emotional, social, and financial investment.

The dress was on. Guests had arrived. Families were present. A wedding had been imagined long before that morning. Stopping everything would have meant confronting not only his behavior, but the collapse of an entire expected future in front of everyone.

That may help explain why an outsider could see the warning signs more clearly than she could. The planner’s assistant had comparatively little invested and could ask the crucial question: “You know you don’t have to do this, right?” The bride, by contrast, had years of attachment and an immediate desire to salvage something she had already sacrificed so much for.

Psychology describes part of this dynamic through the sunk cost fallacy.

Psychologist Mark Travers explains in Psychology Today that people may remain in unhealthy relationships because time, emotional labor, shared history, money, and sacrifice already invested make leaving feel like admitting everything was “for nothing.” The more someone has committed, the harder it can become to judge the relationship based solely on what is happening now.

Verywell Mind similarly explains that sunk costs can keep people investing in situations that no longer benefit them because abandoning the investment feels psychologically painful. A healthier decision asks what continuing will cost, rather than trying to recover what has already been spent.

That perspective does not mean the bride was foolish. Under extreme stress, people often reach for continuity because stopping feels unbearable. Love can also coexist with denial, hope, and fear of humiliation.

The rumored divorce three months later, if accurate, makes the wedding especially sad. The ceremony apparently postponed a decision rather than resolving the underlying problem.

Sometimes the bravest choice at a wedding is saying “I do.” Other times, it may be recognizing that arriving at the altar does not obligate anyone to stay there.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

These users said the groom vanishing before the wedding was an enormous red flag

doppleganger2621 − I want to say that the groom is 110% at fault here.

But there is NO WAY I would go forward for a wedding if the groom, whether he was my groom to be, best man, family,

went literally MIA for a month before the wedding

louloutre75 − 2 weeks and people were still talking about a wedding? After 24hrs I would have called the cops. What is wrong with people?

delulu4drama − The groom disappearing is definitely NOT the start of happily ever after 😳

These users shared or confirmed similarly chaotic wedding stories involving disappearing grooms

cabinet123door − When my niece got married, her husband got on his motorcycle and disappeared as soon as the wedding was over.

He didn't reappear until the next day, leaving my niece to spend her wedding night alone.

Turns out he got shitfaced with his friends and was afraid to face my niece, who has a temper. Neither of them showed up for the brunch.

Her mom finally found them both and told them she didn't care if they got divorced,

but they were damn well going to get on the plane and go to Hawaii, because she'd paid for it. They went, and they're still married 21 years later.

LadenWithSorrow − I texted my mom, who also worked there at the time, to see if she remembered how long he was missing.

She thinks it was maybe 2 weeks but isn’t sure. She recognized his name because it became a swear word around the office.

These commenters felt the bride ignored obvious warning signs, possibly because of low self-esteem

_gadget_girl − Unfortunately it sounds like the bride had incredibly low self esteem.

Commercial-Place6793 − She should’ve listened to you.

These Redditors questioned whether an officiant should have married someone who was visibly intoxicated

njVowsNow − I don't know any officiant who would marry someone who was visibly i__oxicated. .. Wow. .......... If this is even a real story. ..

Massive_Dig3963 − Where I am it's illegal to marry someone that drunk to someone else.

Whoever did so, if it comes up in divorce proceedings he was that i__oxicated, that person will get a call

from the government asking what the hell they were doing, and have their license to perform marriage suspended of revoked.

egg_totin − OP literally explained that the story sounds absurd bc it IS.

Also makes perfect sense that there’s missing information in this story or parts that don’t make sense bc OP wasn’t a close person to the wedding.

I’m sure there would be much more detail and explanation if this was coming from the bride, for instance.

Would you have canceled the wedding the moment the groom disappeared, or waited for an explanation? And if someone arrived that intoxicated, should the ceremony have been stopped no matter what the couple wanted?
