Guy Issues Breakup Ultimatum After Girlfriend Waves Gun At Him During Night Out

A man’s casual night out with drinks took a terrifying turn when his girlfriend grabbed her cousin’s gun and began waving it around while posing for photos. She swung the firearm in his direction several times as everyone had been drinking heavily. He repeatedly dodged or gently pushed it aside, growing increasingly alarmed by the reckless behavior.

The next day he confronted her with a firm ultimatum: one more incident of pointing a gun at him and the relationship would end immediately. A strong advocate for proper firearm handling, he felt deeply unsettled, especially since he had no prior knowledge that a weapon was even present in the vehicle.

A Redditor sets a strict breakup boundary after his girlfriend waves a gun at him while drinking.

Guy Issues Breakup Ultimatum After Girlfriend Waves Gun At Him During Night Out
Not the actual photo.

'AITAH for telling my girlfriend we will break up if she points a gun at me?'

So for context, we were out drinking with her cousin and he had his gun on him. She asked for it and started waving it around, taking pictures, etc.

During this whole sequence, she waved it towards my direction numerous times, and every time I either moved my head or put it down with my hand.

She was pretty drunk, so the next day I texted her that if she ever waved a gun in my direction again we will breakup on the spot.

I’m pretty big on gun safety so the whole situation just irritated me for the most part.

Edit: I didn’t know there was a gun in the car, if I knew beforehand, I definitely would’ve stayed home

The core issue here boils down to a fundamental clash: one partner’s strong emphasis on gun safety colliding with the other’s casual, intoxicated handling of a loaded weapon in a confined space like a car. From the poster’s perspective, repeatedly having the barrel waved near his head crossed a bright red line, prompting a firm boundary to protect his well-being.

Opposing views might argue the ultimatum feels harsh or premature after one incident, suggesting it overlooks the social fun or her level of intoxication as a mitigating factor rather than a core problem.

Yet motivations on both sides reveal deeper layers. Gun enthusiasts often treat safety rules as non-negotiable because lapses can have irreversible consequences, while the other side might see the waving as playful rather than threatening in the moment.

Broadening this out, the story highlights a much larger social issue around the dangerous intersection of alcohol and firearms. Research consistently shows how alcohol impairs judgment, reduces inhibitions, and heightens risks when guns are involved. According to a report from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, an estimated one in three gun homicide perpetrators drank heavily before the act, and about 30% of gun homicide victims had been drinking heavily beforehand. Similarly, a quarter of gun suicide victims were heavily drinking at the time.

Heavy drinking is linked to increased aggression and poor decision-making around weapons, turning what might seem like harmless fun into potential tragedy. Studies reinforce that alcohol misuse significantly elevates the odds of firearm-related injuries and deaths through homicide, suicide, and unintentional incidents.

Guns demand respect and proper training, especially when substances cloud anyone’s senses. This aligns with public health experts who stress that basic rules like never handling firearms while drinking exist for good reason.

One analysis of alcohol and firearm violence noted that over one third of firearm violence decedents had recently consumed alcohol, underscoring how the combination amplifies dangers far beyond a single night out. In the Redditor’s case, the ultimatum serves as a practical safeguard, forcing a conversation about responsibility rather than leaving safety to chance.

Neutral solutions start with open talks about shared values on safety, perhaps suggesting both partners complete a certified gun safety course together if firearms remain part of their social circle. Avoiding situations where drinking and weapons mix offers another low-drama path forward. Ultimately, healthy relationships thrive when both people prioritize mutual respect for personal boundaries around physical safety.

Here’s the feedback from the Reddit community:

Some people state the OP is NTA and emphasize that guns and alcohol are a terrible, dangerous combination that should never mix.

stevenpdx66 − Guns and alcohol are a terrible combination. NTA.

perpetuallyxhausted − This is the most American thing I've ever read, even if you're not American.

How The ACTUAL f__k can you claim to give any shits about gun safety with what happened?

Alcohol and guns don't mix, even a little bit. Your line should not have been her pointing it at you,

it should have been her picking it up at all when she's drunk and probably hasn't gone through any gun safety training.

Prestigious_Card6232 − “Guns are cool, i__ots, not so much. When you put those two things together, you may end up with what we call a Darwin Award! ” - Brandon...

In all seriousness she is a complete i__ot for what she did and her cousin should have known better to have his CCW (or I assume his ccw) on him...

Guns and alcohol may be controlled by the same bureau but that doesn’t mean they should be used together.

Others advise setting a hard boundary or breaking up immediately because the girlfriend’s actions with the loaded gun were extremely reckless and unacceptable.

Sea-Operation-6123 − I think you may need a stronger boundary…

“if you ever touch a gun again when you’re drinking or ever point it at me for any reason, I will break up with you immediately.”

Also, don’t hang out with her cousin. Dude clearly should not own a gun. No one with half a brain cell is handing their weapon to the drunk girl.

eta - wait… your gf was waving a loaded weapon around in a car? So were y’all drinking & driving? Come on! Y’all need to be better.

ImAnNPCsoWhat − NTA. Break up with her anyway. Gun safety is paramount and the fact that she was so lax with it is unacceptable.

She and her cousin who provided the firearm put everyone present and anyone walking by or sleeping nearby in danger. Edit: cousin not brother.

Single_Oven_819 − Emergency medicine Dr here. Guns are no joke. Tell her she needs to take a gun safety class or leave her ass immediately.

AtlantaDave998 − NTA. Your girlfriend was a dangerous and drunk l__atic.

BAHGate − NTA and I would not wait until next time.

TrickGarden6972 − These questions are dumb. WIBTA for breaking up with someone who has the potential to off me?

Some people say the OP is being too generous by even considering giving her a second chance.

[Reddit User] − You're too generous. I wouldn't even give her that second chance.

In the end, this saga leaves us reflecting on how one careless moment with a gun and drinks can test the foundations of trust and safety in a relationship.

Do you believe the Redditor’s firm stance was justified to protect himself, or might it have escalated things unnecessarily? How would you handle a similar boundary around personal safety in your own life? Drop your thoughts in the comments, we’d love to hear how you’d navigate this tricky territory.
