Guy Keeps Mocking Housemate Until She Start Spitting Facts About His Family

A young woman in college finally reached her limit after months of nonstop teasing about her looks from a new guy in their shared friend circle. She had brushed off the rude jokes at first, staying quiet and non-confrontational while her roommates dismissed her concerns as nothing serious.

Everything changed when he asked to speak with her privately one evening. In that moment her bottled-up frustration exploded, and she fired back with a cutting remark that hit straight at his painful family history involving adoption and a difficult mother.

A college student endured repeated teasing about her looks before a harsh comeback.

Not the actual photo.

'AITA for my response after a guy kept saying I’m ugly?'

I’m (22F) a college student and currently live with three other girls (early - mid 20s).

Our place is big so we often have friends (girls and guys) over and our place is the regular hangout spot.

Well in the summer a new guy (21m) joined the friend circle and he’s incredibly rude to me.

He often jokes that I’m ugly/makes fun of my looks and called me a “Walmart [some actress whose name I forgot]” last time we met.

He only picks on me even tho I’ve not mistreated him at all (and before you say it…no he does NOT like me).

It upset me but I’m non confrontational so just brushed his comments off. (And no one told him to cut it out either.

When I voiced my concern to the group they said that he’s obviously not being serious. Well to me it WAS serious).

As a result me and the girls started excluding him from everything.

Well a few days ago I found out that he was adopted as a baby and that his mom is an awful, awful narcissist.

That same evening he knocked on our door and asked to speak with me privately.

Naturally I declined. I told him that he’s such an a__hole even his biological parents couldn’t stand him.

I also added that he clearly took after his mom in terms of personality. After this incident I was labeled an AH by some people (mostly the guys).

Apparently I went from 0-100 with my response and that it was far more savage/toxic than what he said to me all this time.

However my closest friends backed me up and said that my reply was totally justified. So, AITA?

A young woman endured repeated comments about her appearance, including comparisons that left her feeling singled out and dismissed when she spoke up. Her friends brushed it off as harmless banter, leaving her to bottle up the hurt until a private conversation request triggered an explosive response that referenced his adoption and narcissistic mother.

The situation highlights how non-confrontational personalities often absorb small slights until they overflow. Early, calm boundary-setting like politely saying, “Those comments aren’t funny to me, please stop” can prevent escalation. Instead, the buildup turned a manageable issue into a dramatic showdown that split the group, with some calling her reaction overly harsh while others cheered her for finally standing up.

Both sides carry responsibility in scenarios like this. Persistent teasing about looks qualifies as bullying, which research links to serious mental health risks. According to the CDC, teenagers who experience bullying show significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression symptoms compared to those who do not. Victims often report lowered self-esteem, social withdrawal, and long-term emotional distress that can linger into adulthood.

At the same time, the young man’s background of adoption and a challenging maternal relationship may have shaped his defensive or mean-spirited style, as childhood trauma from narcissistic parenting can influence adult interpersonal patterns.

Psychologist Patrick Teahan has noted the lasting impact of such upbringings, observing that many survivors of childhood trauma exhibit patterns like “trying to get difficult people to be good to us” in their relationships. While this does not excuse hurtful behavior toward others, it offers context for why someone might lash out or struggle with empathy.

Broader family dynamics and social circles play a key role too. When friends fail to intervene in teasing, it normalizes the behavior and isolates the target. Expert advice emphasizes addressing issues early with assertive, neutral communication rather than avoidance or retaliation.

Neutral solutions start with stepping back from toxic group dynamics, seeking supportive new connections, and practicing calm boundary-setting in future conflicts. Everyone benefits when groups prioritize respect over “just joking” excuses.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Some users say NTA, arguing the guy deserved harsh karma for repeatedly mistreating the OP and that he can’t complain after picking on others.

Penguin_Doctor − NTA. people who pick on others can't complain when they get it back.

He needed to get a hefty dose of karma, maybe it'll teach him to be a better person. I doubt it though.

Lopsided_Respect_158 − NTA. Sometimes you have to read someone to filth, for them to understand you’re not their door mat.

You got great girlfriends. But it’s time for you ladies, to start looking for new dude friends. Any of the guys who aren’t on your side, aren’t worth your time.

Zucchini15 − NTA, I do not care that what you said was harsh. He likely WAS repeating his adopted mom's behavior

and you're not required to protect the feelings of someone who intentionally hurt you over and over.

Was the "your parents didn't even want you" thing a bit much? Definitely, but like... don't start s__t if you can't handle it

JunieBeth − As an adoptee, I can say that's probably the most gut-punch insult you could've said to him. He also deserved it.

Maybe he'll think about how he treats people in the future. I don't care what his upbringing was, that's not an excuse to be a d__k to other people. NTA

CapsFan1066 − NTA. Sounds like he deserved what he got. After he has mistreated you, you do not owe him any time to listen to him.

He needs to learn that it's unacceptable to treat people like he did, joking or not. He is finding out now that there are consequences, let him learn.

Sea_Firefighter_4598 − NTA. Brutal, but NTA. He thought you were an easy target, and damn, did he learn differently. Glass houses and all that.

It is not up to his friends to determine how much what he said hurt you. Glad to know your friends have your back.

Others say ESH or similar, criticizing both the guy’s behavior and the OP for handling conflict poorly by letting things build up and then exploding with an overly cruel response.

[Reddit User] − This is the problem with being non-confrontational. When you put up with crazy bulls__t

without setting your boundaries, eventually your anger will come out sideways.

He’s awful, but you handled this really poorly. You went way too far. I hope this can be a learning experience for you.

You need to start handling conflict like an adult. Confront people head on when they overstep your boundaries. Don’t just put up with it until you explode. ESH.

Fun_Charge_8311 − ESH I mean, he sucks. The way he treated you was awful.

But it sounds like he may have been trying to talk to you privately maybe to apologize?

Either way, his comments were rude, hurtful, and uncalled for. He’s an a__hole. He very clearly has issues.

Also, your friends are AHs for not calling him out on it and for invalidating your very valid feelings. They don’t sound like very good friends to me.

But to weaponize his adoption trauma??? That was incredibly cruel. You didn’t just sink to his level,

but went even further and very clearly chose the worst thing to say in order to hurt him as much as possible.

You were 100% justified to be angry at him, but you handled it like a mega AH. He DEFINITELY owes you an apology. But you also owe him a BIG...

ActionThaxton − you're not an a__hole, but you'd do well to learn some balance. Don't just let things build up until you lash out HARD and painfully.

In fairness, it sounds like he deserved it, but you're not doing yourself any favors living this way.

You'll be less happy, and alienate some good people who don't really understand why you acted that way.

Some users say the response was harsh but fair given the guy’s lack of real apology and pattern of behavior.

BetweenWeebandOtaku − JAM: justified a__hole move. Yeah, it was WAAAAAY harsh but you provided him with an opportunity to change and grow.

Insulting people and using admittedly s__tty circumstances to excuse it just lets him continue to be a s__tty person.

He gave you a "I'm sorry but..." which isn't a real apology or marker of growth.

He was making an excuse and you didn't take it. Instead you gave him what he was giving you. Seems fair to me.

Do you think the response was justified payback after months of dismissal, or did it go too far by hitting a sensitive personal wound? How would you set boundaries earlier in a similar friend-group situation without letting resentment build? Share your thoughts below!
