Guy Signs Up For Surf Lessons, Admits He Can’t Swim, Then Leaves A Furious Review

Adventure sports often look easy from the outside. Surfing, in particular, has a way of drawing people in with images of sunny beaches, crashing waves, and effortless balance on a board.

However, behind every smooth ride on a wave are basic skills that most beginners are expected to have before they even start learning. One surf instructor thought those expectations were pretty clear, until a recent lesson proved otherwise. During a group session, a student suddenly began panicking in the water, leaving the instructor confused about what was going on.

When the real reason came out, the situation escalated quickly and ended with raised voices, an angry customer, and a very unhappy review online. Read on to see how this awkward moment unfolded and why the internet had strong opinions about it.

A surf instructor thought a student was joking until panic hit the waves

Guy Signs Up For Surf Lessons, Admits He Can’t Swim, Then Leaves A Furious Review
not actual the photo

'AITA I called someone a dumba__ for taking surf lessons, when he can't swim?'

I teach surf lessons, and we had a new set of people come in, and when we got in the water,

he started freaking out, wailing and screaming and holding onto the board.

I asked him what's wrong, and he told me he can't swim. I thought this was some joke, so I said, "Haha, very funny.

Now paddle," and again he's freaking out and just hanging onto the board, not swimming or anything.

That's when I found out he can't swim, and he was serious.

I was p__sed that im wasting my time on this when I had a class to teach

I drag him to shore, and he asks if he can just lie on the board and I can just bring him over so he can wait for a wave.

I was pissed that I was wasting my time on this when I had a class to teach.

"listen dumba__, you need to know how to swim to go surfing, just like you need to

know how to swim for water polo, scuba diving, and many other activities.

If you really can't swim, then go away; I'm done wasting time here."

He leaves, and there is a massive argument that I can hear from the beach where he's yelling at our staff, demanding a refund and other s__t.

He later writes really bad reviews about us on yelp, saying "very unprofessional, unwilling to assist me in learning

how to surf," to which our staff responded back with, "Sir, you didn't know how to swim;

that's a prerequisite to surfing, something that should be self-evident."

Drowning is a major public health concern worldwide and remains one of the leading causes of accidental death, particularly among children and young adults.

Although many people associate drowning with dramatic emergencies, in reality it often happens quickly and silently. Understanding the risk factors that increase the likelihood of drowning can help individuals and communities take effective steps to prevent these tragic incidents.

Research highlighted by the  CDC shows that age plays an important role in drowning risk. Young children are especially vulnerable, with drowning being one of the leading causes of death among children aged one to four years.

Many of these incidents occur in residential swimming pools when children gain access to water without proper supervision. Even a short moment without adult attention can be enough for a child to slip into the water and experience serious danger. Because of this, constant supervision and protective barriers around pools are strongly recommended.

Another major risk factor is limited or no swimming ability. People who cannot swim, or who have only basic swimming skills, may panic when they unexpectedly enter deep water or encounter strong currents.

Without the ability to stay afloat or move toward safety, the risk of drowning increases significantly. Studies have shown that formal swimming lessons can greatly reduce drowning risk, particularly for children and teenagers who frequently participate in water activities.

Safety equipment also plays a critical role in preventing fatalities. According to the data discussed by the CDC, many boating-related drowning deaths occur when individuals are not wearing life jackets.

Life jackets help keep a person afloat even if they become tired, injured, or unconscious in the water. Wearing a properly fitted life jacket during activities such as boating, fishing, or kayaking can significantly increase the chances of survival in an emergency.

Alcohol consumption is another factor that contributes to drowning risk. Drinking alcohol can impair balance, judgment, and coordination, making it more difficult for individuals to react appropriately in water-related situations.

In many cases, alcohol is involved when adults drown during recreational water activities, especially around lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. Additional insights from the highlight show that people who are non-swimmers or weak swimmers face the greatest risk when entering natural waterways.

Many individuals believe that standing or wading in shallow water is safe, but unexpected changes in depth, slippery surfaces, or strong currents can quickly lead to dangerous situations. Even experienced swimmers may struggle when environmental conditions such as waves or currents become challenging.

Overall, drowning is often the result of multiple risk factors occurring at the same time, including lack of swimming skills, absence of supervision, failure to use safety equipment, and risky behaviors near water.

By improving water safety education, encouraging swimming lessons, and promoting responsible behavior around water, communities can reduce the number of preventable drowning incidents each year.

Here’s how people reacted to the post:

These Reddit users backed the instructor, saying the student was reckless for surfing without swimming skills

rhyleyrey − NTA. This man could have gotten himself or someone else killed.

It would have been incredibly dangerous to allow him to continue; his suggestions were dumb.

It's pretty sad that one wouldn't assume you would need to know how to swim to go out into the ocean. That's how people drown.

Infinite-Tie-9482 − NTA- you’d also be amazed how many people try to scuba dive when they can’t swim.

It absolutely astounds me! It’s the ocean? Scuba diving is is fairly safe, but being able to swim in the huge ocean

where anything can happen is kind of basic! The lack of common sense in people and this dude amazes me!

dmoney0410 − NTA First off, lmao, people are something else. Imagine if you had your backed turned and he fell in and drowned.

Sometimes you've got to tell it the way it is lol. Is there a waiver the students need to sign?

If so, it should have verbiage explicitly stating you need to know how to swim and you, as the instructor, can end anyone’s lesson if you see fit.

If those documents do exist, just reply to his Yelp reviews with a policy statement.

keleverythings19 − NTA He was a dumba__ plain and simple. A complete waste of your time.

There are so many thick, entitled people out there; it's unbelievable!

Goblinweb − Calling someone that risks his life for fun a dumbass is appropriate.

He should be thankful that it was just his feelings that were hurt; he could have lost everything if he swallowed the ocean. NTA

These commenters agreed the student was wrong but said the instructor acted unprofessionally

WebbieVanderquack − ESH. Obviously he shouldn't be attempting to surf when he can't swim,

but the "listen dumba__" thing was unprofessional and totally unnecessary. You could have said everything else

you said without the insult, and in fact, the way your staff responded to the Yelp review was ideal.

And to protect yourself in the future, you should probably ask people whether they're competent swimmers.

You don't want to find out only after someone's drowned that they couldn't swim, or couldn't swim well.

sophie_Mal − ESH. You're right that the guy is a dumba__ for thinking he can learn to surf when he can't swim,

in fact, he's beyond dumbass but your response was unprofessional

DoublePostedBroski − ESH. Yeah, it’s kind of ridiculous that someone would think they could surf without first knowing swimming basics.

However, you’re still representing a business (yourself), and you handled it unprofessionally.

All you needed to say was, "Sir, you’re expected to know how to swim before taking up surfing.

You’re welcome to come back once you’ve learned.” If I was a student there and heard you call someone else a dumba__,

I’d begin to wonder what you call everyone. Do you make fun of me?

My classmates (assuming this isn’t 1:1 instruction)? What else are you unprofessional about?

My safety? You unwittingly caused potential harm to your brand, even if the client was a dumbass.

There are ways of handling things professionally.

HarissaPorkMeatballs − ESH. He is a dumba__, but you're meant to be a professional,

you could have dealt with him without calling him names.

Also, did he not have to sign something saying he could swim? How do you handle liability?

These Redditors called out the instructor for not screening students about swimming ability first

din_valve − ESH,- the question "Can you swim?" "How strong of a swimmer are you?"

or "How comfortable are you in the water?" should cross your lips within the first 5 min

of every conversation you have with a new student. am a scuba instructor, and you won't believe

how many people rock up with no swimming skills expecting to be taught diving and get certified.

It is part of your role as an instructor to clear up any misconceptions the general public may have about the sport you teach.

Smackroyd − YTA. If you run a surf school, one of the first questions on any liability waiver must be, "Can you swim?"

Yes, he could lie, but he didn't. When questioned, he openly told you he couldn't swim.

How negligent do you have to be to allow someone to fit up a wetsuit & board, sit through a detailed safety talk about

what to do if you get into difficulty, and then walk them out to the open ocean without at any point asking, Can you swim?

[Reddit User] − ESH The people of this sub must never leave their homes. Wtf, seriously?

N-T-A for being a jerk for no reason? IT IS YOUR FAULT, AND YOURS ALONE. You are, for one, supposed to be the professional.

Why are you being rude to someone when you should be screening people with these questions before you get on the water?

Isn’t it your job to know that, given that their ability to swim well should definitely factor in to

how you’re teaching them, or in this case, IF you’re going to be teaching them? You’re not wrong.

It is definitely obvious to me, but there’s no reason to be so rude over an honest mistake.

These commenters shared stories showing how dangerous it is when non-swimmers enter water activities

Royal_Arachnid_2295 − I nearly drowned as a child because someone who couldn't swim was pushed into the pool I was in.

She panicked and grabbed on to me, using me as a flotation device, and in the process nearly drowned me.

I inhaled loads of water and remember having the thought of "s__t, this is how I'm going to die?"

I had to grab on to her and pull her down with me to get her to let go. I then fully kicked her in the face to get away.

Honestly, it was the most frightening experience of my life.

Fuckcody − Oh man, you’d be surprised what people don’t understand as prerequisites when it comes to swimming.

Was a swim teacher for a long time pre-pandemic;

once had a dad call to schedule a trial lesson, and when he came in, he asked if we provide swimsuits. I had to reschedule him

ok_attorneyGA − My husband and I went scuba diving in Mexico.

Found a 13-year-old with a tiny boat to take us out to underwater caves the following day.

When we showed up to go out in the boat, there was a Canadian couple who wanted to share the boat. We said sure and headed out.

When we got to the caves, the other man wanted to go in first.

When he flung himself backwards without securing his mask, I made the decision to stay on board.

The three of us watched him attempt to get back in the boat, but he kept sinking and going under.

I asked his wife, "First time diving?" And she said yes.

My husband asked how strong of a swimmer her husband was; she said he couldn’t swim.

My husband (a former lifeguard) waited for him to tire more and then dived in and saved him.

They took us to dinner that night, and we laughed about how this couple thought

they could go scuba diving in a foreign country with no diving certification or instruction and not knowing how to swim!

He was very lucky that they didn’t get a boat alone and happened to have a trained lifeguard on the boat!

The story left Reddit split right down the middle like a wave breaking on the shore. Some readers felt the instructor was simply protecting everyone’s safety, while others argued that professionalism matters even when dealing with baffling decisions.

One thing most people could agree on? The ocean isn’t exactly the place for improvisation. So what do you think? Was the instructor justified in calling out a dangerous mistake, or did frustration get the better of him in a moment that needed calm authority?

How would you handle a student who revealed mid-lesson that they couldn’t swim? Share your hot takes below.
