He Finally Told His Brother Why Their Family Skipped His Wife’s Funeral, and It Destroyed Their Relationship

in Social Issues

When his brother’s wife died, almost the entire family stayed away from the funeral. It was not because they had forgotten about the death. They simply did not like the woman who had been married to their brother, and after years of conflict, they had cut ties with her and largely with him too.

Only one family member attended.

A year and a half later, the brothers were drinking together when the subject unexpectedly came up. This time, the argument was not really about the woman who had died. It was about the man’s recently deceased twin sister, the grief surrounding her death, and whether she deserved the love and attention she had received.

One drunken comment opened a wound that had apparently never healed.

The brother’s wife had died after a heart attack at 43. According to the poster, she had been difficult, cruel, and deeply disliked. Her own mother had stopped speaking to her years earlier. Other relatives had also cut contact, and apparently she had no close friends.

He Finally Told His Brother Why Their Family Skipped His Wife’s Funeral, and It Destroyed Their Relationship

'AITA for telling my brother why our family did not attend his wife’s funeral?'

This is a situation with a lot of layers.

My (M38) brother’s (M41) wife (F43) passed after a heart attack a year and a half ago. She was relatively young, but truthfully, it wasn’t completely unexpected as she had...

I’m going to be honest and not sugarcoat anything. My late SIL was not the best person at all.

She was not liked by many people, including her own mother, who stopped speaking to her 15 years ago.

My family absolutely despised her, and cut contact off with my brother after he married her. She did not have any friends, as the community we live in also really...

The only person who enjoyed her presence was my brother. When my SIL passed, no one from my family except me attended the funeral.

This is going to be hard to write out. My twin sister (F38) passed away four months ago. It was the hardest day of my life.

My sister was and still is very loved by our family and the community as a whole. She passed in a car accident.

The organizations that she volunteered for fundraised in her name and raised a large amount of money. Many people sent flowers, planted trees, and sent their prayers and condolences.

Yesterday, I visited my brother after work, and thought we could grab a couple of drinks and chill.

He drank more than normal, but I didn’t comment about it as I knew he was going through a lot of stress.

As we were rambling and drunk, my brother randomly said that my twin sister “didn’t deserve” all the “worship” and that his wife deserved the same amount of attention and...

Listen, I understand him wanting his wife to get more care and condolences, and didn’t take issue with that part. However, him saying that our sister didn’t deserve the love...

I told him that the reason why our family did not come to the funeral was solely on her, and the fact that she was a horrible, cruel person.

She had no friends and no one who actually could stand her expect for him, including her own mother.

She did not deserve any of the love or respect my sister was shown because she never was kind or loving to anyone.

He started to scream insults at me, but at that point I was already leaving. My brother later texted me and said that what I said was absolutely despicable and...

Edit: Added additional context on SILs behavior in comment comment: She acted like a narcissist (not diagnosing her, just from what I observed).

All the attention must go to her at all times and it does not matter who she hurts.

When they were dating, she ruined multiple events, including our cousins wedding and anniversary party (made a scene when she didn’t get what she wanted, pretended like she was dying,...

She was a user, and everyone who gets close to her learns this, which means no one sticks around and why she had no friends.

She would verbally abuse her mom in front of us, and it got to a point where the mom couldn’t take it anymore and went no contact. Overall, she was...

The poster’s family had eventually cut off his brother after he married her.

Still, when she died, the poster attended the funeral. The rest of the family did not.

Then, four months before the Reddit post, the poster’s twin sister died suddenly in a car accident.

Her death was completely different. She was loved by her family and well known in the community. Organizations she had volunteered with raised money in her name. People sent flowers, planted trees, offered prayers, and gathered around the grieving family.

The poster was still deep in that grief when his brother made the comment.

The brothers were having drinks after work, and the brother had been drinking more than usual. At some point, he said the twin sister did not deserve all the “worship” she had received and argued that his late wife deserved the same kind of attention and love.

The poster understood wanting sympathy for his brother’s loss. What he could not tolerate was hearing his sister’s memory attacked.

He told his brother exactly why the family had not attended the wife’s funeral. In his view, their absence was the consequence of her own behavior. He reminded his brother that she had pushed away almost everyone around her and that nobody wanted to be around her.

His brother exploded.

There were insults and shouting, and the poster eventually left. Later, his brother sent a message saying what he had said was despicable and that he never wanted to see him again.

The uncomfortable question is that both brothers were grieving, but they were grieving from completely different places.

Psychologist David B. Feldman, Ph.D., explains that rituals surrounding loss, including funerals and memorial services, can give grief meaning and help people mark a major transition in their lives. He also notes that these rituals can honor both the person who died and the people left behind. The Power of Rituals to Heal Grief, Psychology Today

That distinction matters here. The family may have viewed the funeral as an occasion to honor someone they disliked, but the brother may have experienced it as something completely different. His wife’s funeral was also the moment when he was supposed to be surrounded by the people he still considered family.

Instead, almost everyone stayed away.

That does not make his comment about the twin sister acceptable. Comparing grief and suggesting that someone else’s loved one did not deserve compassion was cruel, especially only four months after the sister’s death. But his anger may have been connected to something deeper than jealousy. He had already experienced his family rejecting the person he loved, and then watched them publicly celebrate another family member after her death.

The poster had every right to defend his sister. But telling a grieving widower that his dead wife was hated by practically everyone was unlikely to heal anything. It was a truth delivered at the worst possible moment.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

A funeral is often about supporting the living as much as remembering the dead.

Optimal-Cycle630 − A funeral has very little to do with the person who died, and a lot to do with those who are left behind

Boogity2024 − ESH. There was no reason to give him the hard truths, I'm sure he already knew, just didn't want to admit it to himself.

justbraised − ESH. Your family for not going to his wife's funeral, him for saying that stuff about your sister, and you for reminding him how much you all hated...

Several commenters argued that the family could have attended simply to support the brother, even if they had no affection for his wife.

guys_pm_urprettyface − YTA. Funerals are not for the dead but for the living. Considering you are close enough to grab beers with him, why couldn't any of your family and...

And yes, him saying your sister didn't deserve it is completely wrong and I get it. But you need to see where he is coming from too.

Catlenfell − This weekend, I'm attending the funeral for an absolute garbage man. I'm doing it for his widow and stepdaughter. They're the ones I care about.

taewongun1895 − Need more details. What did the SIL that warranted do much disrespect? You say she was cruel . .. Throw in some examples. Clearly your bother saw something...

Others thought the brother was clearly wrong for insulting the twin sister. A few landed on ESH, believing everyone involved had contributed to the bitterness.

SQ_Madriel − Your family are AH for not supporting your brother in his bereavement. And since your sister also cut him off because of the person he loved, I can...

Flimsy-Brick-9426 − ESH. just because no one liked her didn't mean you had to say it to his face, that's his dead wife. you're both grieving the loss of your...

Seeing your entire family not show up to support you except 1 brother (because thats what the funeral is really, to support the surviving spouse at the end of the...

Pia_moo − Your amazing sister did not attend to support his brother grief? Sorry… none in the family showed up for him?

Is pretty obvious the h__eous dead wife was not going to attend… not alive at least, and you all amazing and loving people choose to still not be there… And...

Hennahands − YTA. Your community and family chose to abandon his brother in his grief. I am so sorry your twin passed away.

Recognize that despite getting loads of support you are still reaching out to internet strangers to reconfirm your feelings. Contrast that with how your brother must have felt and assess...

There is no clean winner here.

The brother should not have diminished his sister-in-law’s death by attacking the love shown to the poster’s twin. But the family also made a painful choice when they decided that disliking his wife mattered more than showing up for him.

And the poster’s response, while understandable, turned an already painful conversation into something almost impossible to take back.

Grief has a strange way of making old resentments louder. The brother wanted his wife’s death to matter. The poster wanted his sister’s memory protected. Both were hurting, and neither had much patience left.

Sometimes the harshest truths are the ones that can wait.

Was the poster justified in finally saying what the family had always thought, or should he have let his grieving brother have that one moment?
