He Said Any Source Was Fair Game. So She Cited Him, and Won the Argument

Most college classes run on a simple contract. Professors teach, students learn, and somewhere in between, ideas get tested. But every now and then, that balance tilts. In one research methods class, a professor had a habit of making confident, sweeping claims, the kind that sounded authoritative but didn’t always come with evidence.

One student noticed. She wasn’t trying to start a rebellion, just to understand the material. When she pushed back with actual research, she expected a discussion. What she got instead was a rule.

“Any source is valid as long as you cite it correctly. The quality of your argument is what matters.”

It sounded fair on the surface. Neutral, even. But rules like that can cut both ways.

Here’s how it all unfolded.

'my professor said any source is valid as long as I cite it properly. so I cited him?'

this was junior year, research methods class. our professor, I'll call him Dr. K, had this thing where he would make bold claims during lectures

without citing anything and then get annoyed if students pushed back on it.

classic "I have a PhD so my word is the source" energy. at some point he made a sweeping statement

about consumer behavior that directly contradicted something I had read in two separate peer reviewed papers,

I raised my hand and mentioned this, and he said, and I quote, "in this class, any source is valid as long as you cite it correctly. the quality of...

I wrote my next paper arguing the opposite of his claim. my primary source for the counter-argument was a transcript I had made of his own lecture

from three weeks earlier where he had said something that, read carefully, actually undermined his newer position.

I cited it as: [Last name, First initial. Class lecture, Course number, University name, Date.] formatted exactly according to the citation guide he gave us on day one.

he handed back papers with written comments. mine said "interesting argument, strong structure" and then at the bottom: "this citation is not acceptable, please see me."

I went to see him. I brought the citation guide. I showed him the format. I showed him his own quote.

I asked which part of the citation requirements I had failed to meet. there was a long pause.

he changed my grade from a B+ to an A- and told me the citation was "technically valid but in poor taste.". I have never felt more seen by a...

The Setup

The student was in her junior year, taking a research methods course. The professor, Dr. K, had a reputation. Smart, confident, and a little too comfortable treating his own words like settled fact.

During one lecture, he made a bold claim about consumer behavior. It didn’t sit right. She had read two peer-reviewed papers that said the opposite. Not vaguely different, but directly contradictory.

So she raised her hand and mentioned them. Calmly. Respectfully.

Dr. K didn’t engage with the studies. Instead, he leaned on policy. Any source is valid, he said, as long as it’s cited correctly. What matters is the argument.

It was the kind of statement that sounds academic but quietly shifts the ground. If all sources are equal, then authority becomes… flexible.

She let it go in the moment. But she didn’t forget it.

The Move

When the next paper assignment came around, she saw her opening.

She chose to argue against Dr. K’s claim. Not emotionally, not dramatically. Just a structured, well-supported argument.

But the key piece was her primary source.

Instead of relying only on external research, she used something closer. A transcript she had made of one of his earlier lectures. Three weeks prior, he had said something that, when read carefully, actually contradicted his newer position.

She cited it properly. Precisely the way the course guidelines required:
Last name, First initial. Class lecture, Course number, University, Date.

No tricks. No bending the rules. Just following them to the letter.

The Confrontation

When the papers were returned, her feedback was mostly positive. Strong structure. Interesting argument.

But at the bottom, one line stood out.

“This citation is not acceptable. Please see me.”

So she did.

She brought the citation guide. She brought her paper. She showed him the format. Then she showed him the quote. His quote.

And then she asked a simple question. Which part of the citation requirements had she failed to meet?

That’s when things got quiet.

There’s a particular kind of silence that happens when someone realizes they’ve been caught by their own logic. Not loudly, not dramatically. Just a pause that stretches a little too long.

Dr. K didn’t argue the formatting. He couldn’t. It was correct.

Instead, he shifted the ground again.

The citation, he said, was technically valid. But in poor taste.

What Was Really Going On

That phrase did a lot of work. “Poor taste” wasn’t about rules. It was about discomfort.

Because what the student had done wasn’t just follow instructions. She had exposed a contradiction. Not by attacking him, but by using his own framework.

In academic spaces, authority usually comes from expertise. But it also depends on consistency. When those two drift apart, things get awkward fast.

Dr. K’s rule had been designed to simplify arguments. Instead, it created a loophole. And she walked right through it.

To his credit, he didn’t double down. He didn’t penalize her. He adjusted.

Her grade changed from a B+ to an A-.

Not perfect. But better.

Reflection

There’s something quietly satisfying about this kind of moment. No shouting, no grand speech. Just logic doing its job.

Could she have avoided the tension? Probably. She could have cited only external sources and moved on.

But then the contradiction would have stayed hidden.

What makes this story interesting isn’t that she “won.” It’s that she took the rules seriously. More seriously than the person who made them.

And sometimes, that’s enough to shift the outcome.

Here’s what people had to say to OP:

Most people loved the precision of it. “Technically correct,” one user wrote, “the best kind of correct.”

SmolHumanBean8 − The fact he upped your grade after being proved wrong, lmaoooooo

Poh-Tay-To − Kudos to the prof for taking it on the chin

Logophage_ − Librarian here. Not sure what citation guidelines you were given, but most style manuals absolutely have formats for citing a lecture.

These days, there are formats for everything up to and including a TikTok.

On a side note, the fact that you can build a citation is irrelevant to the ACTUAL worth of any given source—but that’s not what your professor told you, is...

Others pointed out that lecture citations are completely valid in many academic styles, which made the professor’s objection feel more personal than procedural.

LendersQuiz − You are technically correct - the best kind of correct.

FlyingRhenquest − But "Technically valid" is the best kind of valid!

IHaveSomeOpinions09 − Back in the day, I was a physician in the army and attending a military professional education course.

We had to write a paper about something that I not only knew backwards and forwards, but had published extensively on.

Half of my citations were “IHaveSomeOpinions09, et al. ” If the instructor noticed, he made no mention of it.

A few even gave Dr. K some credit for adjusting the grade instead of digging in. Not every professor would.

Leading-Knowledge712 − As a journalist used to do something similar.

One of my editors had the annoying habit of sticking stuff of her own in my articles and then asking me for backup materials with a source for every fact...

I started listing her as the source for stuff she’d added, and before long, she stopped adding these “facts,”

which were usually some random thing she’d seen online—including urban legends.

zorggalacticus − You were technically correct. The best kind of correct.

Briianz − It’s in poor taste because he had to eat his own words!

Desperate_Set_7708 − “Poor taste. ” No, this tastes pretty f__king good, loser

In the end, this wasn’t about disrespect. It was about consistency.

If arguments matter more than authority, then they have to hold up, even when they’re turned back on you.

The professor called it poor taste. The student called it following instructions.

And somewhere between those two perspectives sits the real question.

Was this clever academic honesty, or just a perfectly executed technicality?
