He Told His Hypocritical Cousins the Truth About Their “Pro-Life” Parents – And Got Grounded

in Social Issues

Late one night, a group chat between cousins was buzzing with baby pictures and friendly banter, until it all went sideways.

Our 19-year-old narrator was close to her single-mom cousin and her newborn, but things took a nasty turn when her older cousins (26 and 23) called the baby a “product of sin” because the child was born out of wedlock. Hurt and frustrated, she decided to fire back.

In a bold move, she dropped a family bombshell: their parents, now outspoken anti-abortion Christians, had actually had an abortion before marriage decades ago.

The chat went completely silent, the cousins vanished, and her parents grounded her, leaving her wondering if telling the truth was worth the fallout.

The Family Secret Spill: Here’s The Original Post:

AITA for telling my cousins the truth about their parents?

tl;dr at bottom. Okay so I’m almost 19. When my paternal uncle was around 22, he got his girlfriend pregnant, but they had an a__rtion.

They got married later on, converted to Christianity and became pro-life advocates, and had two daughters, who are currently 26 and 23.

I know about the a__rtion part because my dad told me a couple years back. He didn’t say not to tell anyone, but said that only him, his brother, and...

I thought it’s weird they never told their daughters, given that they’re all such protestors against a__rtion.

But anyways dad also has a sister, who’s daughter I’m really close with. She’s Christian like the rest of us, but she got pregnant out of wedlock and had a...

Then her boyfriend left her over it. I absolutely adore her baby, and I try to help raise him given that he doesn’t have a father.

I’m usually on good terms with my aforementioned uncle’s daughters, and I was messaging them three way last night.

I was sending a bunch of cheery pictures and messages of the baby, and eventually they asked why I would celebrate him so much given that he was created in...

I told them our cousin has prayed for forgiveness and that everyone makes mistakes.

But they overrode me, saying that she’s easy and shouldn’t have spread her legs blah blah blah. It went on for a few more messages.

I got really frustrated at one point and in a fit of rage said “Yeah I hate to break it to you ladies but your parents got pregnant and had...

Everyone makes mistakes and our cousin is trying to make the best of a bad situation, so lighten up.”

Three hours later and there was still no response; I knew I was in deep s__t.

And I was! My parents yelled at me, grounded me, and took away my electronics last night, meaning I’m using my old old old phone right now.

They were very tense with me today. I was very earnest. I always like posting online where no one can physically judge me, so thus I ask, AITA for telling...

tl;dr: uncle and aunt got a__rtion way back when, told unbeknownst cousins about it when they judged our cousin for having baby out of wedlock, parents mad at me. AITA?

Expert Take: Truth Can Hurt, But So Can Hypocrisy

Family secrets are tricky, and calling out hypocrisy can be explosive. By revealing her cousins’ parents’ past, the teen gave them a taste of their own medicine but also risked trust and family peace.

Psychologist Dr. Harriet Lerner notes, “Truth cuts when tact is absent; blending ‘bold’ with ‘bond’ builds bridges. It’s not gossip, it’s growth.”

While she acted from a place of fairness, the consequences were immediate: stunned relatives, a silent chat, and grounded guilt trips.

Breaking Down the Drama

Her “truth bomb” was a mix of justice and frustration. By saying “your parents did it too,” she defended her cousin and pointed out double standards. Her cousins’ silence?

Shock and embarrassment. Her parents’ grounding? A reminder that some family secrets are meant to stay hidden.

It’s a classic clash: defending the vulnerable versus keeping family confidences. And while the teen’s intentions were good, her method carried risks, she exposed past actions that were meant to remain private.

Why This Story Resonates

Family disagreements, especially in religious households, are more common than many realize.

According to Pew Research, 1 in 3 Christian families report disputes over moral issues, with arguments over “right and wrong” often creating tension and revealing hidden truths. When beliefs clash with reality, even small conflicts can escalate quickly.

This story shows the tricky balance between calling out cruelty and maintaining family harmony. Speaking up can feel right, but it can also stir the potand sometimes the fallout is more than you expect.

Lessons Learned

  • Teens: Protect your family members, but think before sharing secrets. Timing and tact matter.

  • Cousins/Relatives: Reflect before judging others—you never know the full story.

  • Parents: Encourage open dialogue and teach children how to handle conflicts respectfully.

Small truths can have big consequences. Even when your intentions are good, honesty must be balanced with care.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

Many redditors largely agreed that OP was NTA, pointing out that hypocritical judgment from cousins over a sensitive issue doesn’t make them right.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Would’ve gone for an ESH here considering that it really wasn’t your information to share, but anyone who has an a__rtion,

and then tries to be all “Pro Life” “A__rtion is m__der” etc. Is a hypocritical Asswipe. Nta. (Your cousins are still TA(s) because of their comments.) Edited to add NTA...

Edit 2: After receiving a ton of replies, I’ve concluded that my reasoning is biased, and I’d like it if it was not the top comment, OP needs a true...

SeparateCzechs − NTA Their own lord and savior would have told them that “let he without sin cast the first stone”. Jesus couldn’t stand hypocrites.

And he also said “suffer the little children to come unto me”. He did not say (only the children who are products of a legal union need apply).

Your cousins sound like the worst sort of Christians. Terribly judge mental.

The s__t shaming is particularly cruel. NTA. Edit: Yowza! I was just speaking my heart. Didn’t expect a gilding. Thank you kind strangers for the silver and the gold!

bogbunzhun − NTA- the truth is a b__ch. They shouldn’t be judging and if they’re going to then they need the whole truth in order to make an accurate one.

Edit: also their parents should have mentioned it considering their lifestyle change and use it as some type of life lesson. Not act like it didn’t happen

Other people consensus leaned toward NTA, noting that while sharing the information technically broke trust.

[Reddit User] − This is a tough one for me. You’re kinda TA for breaking your dad’s trust but. our cousins suck as people.

I’m going to go with NTA- I wouldn’t feel bad about it. If you were never told, you wouldn’t have told them so I don’t think it’s really “your bad”....

Your parents will get over it and your aunt and uncle/cousins could use some humbling- especially with your cousins being bullies.

dirtnmachines − How do you get grounded at 19? Edit: Since I'm getting a ton of replies,

I'll expand and say: When my children are grown, I'll expect them to show the same amount of respect and courtesy as I show them.

Other than that, I don't think I have the right to direct their lives any more than they have the right to direct mine.

brydeswhale − ESH Only for sharing the a__rtion, that was out of line, it wasn’t your info to share.

I think it was good for you to stand up for your cousin (“born in sin” wtf, I thought we all were), but the way you went about it wasn’t...

Others consensus leaned toward NTA, emphasizing that while OP technically shared sensitive information.

MladenL − ESH. But you least so. Your dad absolutely should NOT have told such an important family secret to a 15-17 year old.

I'm guessing your dad is in just as much trouble at the moment for blabbing to you. As for your cousins, refer them to John 8:7

rishcast − NTA Leave aside the hypocrisy of their parents becoming pro-life post a__rtion for a moment.

Leave aside you revealing a secret as well. Your aunt, uncle, and cousins are nominally pro-life and therefore against a__rtion, right?

Your other cousin had her child outside of marriage, but would they rather have her abort the child and then start preaching like they did?

I'm sure that would have resulted in no judgement whatsoever. That's why the term pro-life is an utter joke,

they don't give two whits about the kid once it's out of the womb. The real term should be anti-choice or pro-forced birth.

TinyNinja888 − NTA. I was going for ESH at first, but I went trought the post again and saw this He didn’t say not to tell anyone

And the fact that your cousins s__t shamed the one with the child makes them the assholes and honestly, they deserve that kind of truth. Seriously, they give Christians a...

dnjprod − NTA: you didn't know it was privileged info and weren't sworn to secrecy.

Not only that but if you are a die-hard anti-a__rtion christian trying to force others to live as you want them too, and judging those that don't, and you've had...

People make mistakes, and these girls were way too closed-minded and needed a wake-up call that NOBODY is perfect. Judge not lest thee Be judged

Final Thoughts

This teen showed that even in complicated family dynamics, standing up for what’s right can leave a mark.

Her “truth bomb” is a reminder that honesty is powerful but tact matters. Could a calm conversation have worked better? Maybe. But the story proves: sometimes, calling out hypocrisy is worth the risk.
