He Was Tired of His Neighbor Speeding Through the Neighborhood, So He Started Planting a Very Petty Problem in His Yard

Living next to a reckless driver can turn an otherwise ordinary neighborhood into a source of constant anxiety. For one homeowner, the problem was especially frustrating because children were regularly playing outside, walking along the sidewalks, and crossing the street between houses.

The neighbor in question apparently had a habit of flying down the residential street as though he were on a racetrack. Worse, he had already come dangerously close to the poster’s car twice after blowing through a stop sign.

The homeowner tried going through the proper channels, but nothing seemed to change. So instead of confronting the driver directly, he found a surprisingly quiet way to make his frustration known.

It involved a dog walk, a packet of mint seeds, and one exceptionally unfortunate lawn.

He Was Tired of His Neighbor Speeding Through the Neighborhood, So He Started Planting a Very Petty Problem in His Yard

'I have been flicking mint seeds in his yard all summer?'

There is a dangerous driver in my neighborhood. He absolutely flies down my street.

There are frequently children playing on the sidewalks and running across the street between houses I’m frequently worried one of them is going to be hit.

He also twice this year has blown through the stop sign nearly hitting my car.

His once perfect grass has been covered in little plants all summer. It looks like he’s spraying and mowing but not pulling it up by the root so next year...

Edit: Because this has been asked frequently I have tried to get a speed survey or speed bump installed but need 75% approval from the neighborhood and we fund it.

Police have promised increased patrols which turns out to have been a single cruiser at 6AM

The Dangerous Driver Had One Thing Going for Him

The poster said the neighborhood driver had become a genuine safety concern. With children frequently outside, watching a car speed down the street was unsettling enough. But seeing the same driver ignore a stop sign and nearly hit another vehicle twice made the situation much harder to dismiss.

Then, one day in April, the poster was walking the dog when he saw the same car speeding down the road before pulling into the driver’s garage.

There was something almost comical about the scene.

The man might have been a terrible driver, but apparently he was an excellent gardener.

His lawn was beautiful.

It was perfectly maintained, green, and seemingly free of weeds. The kind of lawn that clearly required time, effort, and probably a fair amount of patience.

That was when the poster got an idea.

He already walked his dog past the house twice every day. He also kept dog-waste bags nearby. Soon, there was another item sitting on the same shelf: a packet of peppermint seeds.

And that’s where the petty revenge began.

Every time he walked past the neighbor’s property, he would subtly flick or sprinkle tiny mint seeds into the grass.

Mint, as anyone who has ever tried to get rid of it knows, can be remarkably aggressive. Once established, it can spread quickly and become difficult to remove completely.

The poster wasn’t expecting an overnight transformation.

He was playing the long game.

The Perfect Lawn Slowly Started Losing the Battle

Over the course of the summer, the neighbor’s immaculate lawn began developing little mint plants.

The homeowner watched from a distance as the neighbor apparently continued mowing and treating the lawn without completely removing the plants and their roots.

That, according to the poster, meant the problem could become even worse the following year.

It was a strangely satisfying form of revenge because there was no confrontation, no shouting match, and no dramatic showdown at the end of the driveway.

Just mint.

Lots and lots of mint.

Of course, the important question remained: why not simply report the driver?

According to the poster’s update, that had already been attempted. They had tried pursuing measures such as a speed survey or speed bump, but neighborhood approval and funding were required. Police also promised increased patrols, which apparently amounted to one cruiser showing up at around 6 AM.

It wasn’t exactly the solution anyone had hoped for.

So the mint continued.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Ok-Brick6831 − Follow that with some clover too…

CrypticBunny − Had a similar driver in my neighborhood. The guy that lived next to me heard the car coming up the hill one day and rolled a soccer ball...

The driver swerved too hard and ended up in a ditch with massive vehicle damage from a tree.

Tried to convince the responding officer that he was only going 25 mph.

kesshoukun − Dill, too! The smell will be awful combined with peppermint omg Edit: thank you for the awards! Who knew so many people are down for scent a__ault warfare...

ChronoLink99 − You should also report the license plate as a dangerous driver.

SquiddlyB − Way to spread your seed OP!

Wolverine-7509 − Congrats, you earned a new nickname: "Minty Pettyseed" the lost hero we needed. .. sowing their pettiness across the lands!

Negative_Raisin_997 − Someone once put marihuana seeds in the planters of a local police precinct. No one noticed until the plants were 4 feet tall.

Marine__0311 − We had the same issue when I lived in town except it was a brake and muffler shop at the end of the street.

They would come flying down the street as fast as 50 MPH on a residential street. Then slam on the brakes. There were several families with kids living there.

Complaints to the shop and the PD were ignored until they finally hit a kid. He was lucky he survived with relatively minor injuries.

The PD finally put an unmarked car out there and started citing them. After a few dozen tickets in a few weeks they finally stopped doing it.

Juanzilla17 − Grab some catnip seeds as well. Let him have the neighborhood hangout spot

Pure_Marsupial8185 − When I was a kid, there was someone who liked speeding up and down our block too. Finally my next door neighbor who was a little drunk at...

He then goes to the driver’s door and yells “MY KIDS ARE OUT HERE” as he pulls the driver out through the window and proceeds to beat him senseless.

Now I do not condone violence, and I am not saying what he did was right. . . but those were the good old days lol. 😂

Final Thoughts

There is something undeniably petty about deliberately introducing an aggressive plant into someone’s carefully maintained lawn. But there is also a bigger frustration underneath the joke.

The homeowner wasn’t angry because the neighbor’s grass looked too perfect. He was angry because repeated attempts to address dangerous driving apparently went nowhere.

Ideally, reckless drivers should be dealt with through enforcement and safer street design, not gardening sabotage.

But when the official solutions aren’t working, it’s easy to understand why a packet of mint seeds suddenly starts looking like an irresistible little weapon of inconvenience.

Whether this was harmless petty revenge or a step too far, one thing is certain: that neighbor may want to start paying closer attention to his lawn.
