Her Coworker Kept Stealing Her Lunch. Then He Accidentally Ate the One Thing He Was Allergic To

There are few things more irritating at work than opening the office refrigerator at lunchtime and discovering that your carefully packed meal has disappeared. For one Muslim woman, however, the problem was especially frustrating because she relied on homemade halal meals that were not always easy to replace at short notice.

Then a new coworker joined the office.

After he arrived, her lunches repeatedly started disappearing. She suspected the new employee, Omar, but every time she tried to address the issue, he denied knowing anything about her missing food.

Eventually, she packed leftovers containing peanuts.

She labeled the container with her name, just as she always did. She did not add an allergen warning because nobody in the office routinely labeled their personal food that way.

What happened next turned an ordinary office lunch dispute into a medical emergency.

'Am I wrong for putting peanuts in my food and not putting an allergen label on it, knowing that the food thief is allergic?'

So, my office recently got a new hire, Omar. He’s a young Muslim guy, fresh out of college, and ever since he was onboarded, my food has been going missing.

I mention his religion because I’m also Muslim and it’s hard to find Halal food on short notice, and it’s been really difficult not having food to eat because it’s...

My theory is that he stole my food because I’m the only obviously Muslim one in the office (I wear a hijab and have mentioned going to mosque), and he...

I’ve tried talking to him about this, but he always plays dumb and denies knowing anything about my missing meals. As the title says, Omar is allergic to peanuts.

On Friday, I brought leftovers which included Peanuts. I made sure to label the package clearly with my name, but I didn’t think to include any label about it having...

No one else in the office uses allergen labels for their food; it didn’t even cross my mind.

When I got to the fridge and realized my food was once again missing, I rushed to Omar’s desk where I of course found him eating my food, and I...

His eyes got really wide and he went for his epipen, and thank goodness he injected himself before the reaction got really bad.

After Omar got done panicking about his reaction, he blew up at me. He said that I could have killed him, and I said that he wouldn’t have been in...

He told me that it was my fault for not putting an allergen label on the packaging, and I said that I’m lactose intolerant, but I don’t expect everyone to...

He said that that’s different because milk won’t k__l me, and I said it was the same principle. HR has ruled in my favor, but now requires allergen labels on...

not just for the inconvenience of the labels, but because I “targeted” Omar and “tried to k__l him”. Now I feel bad, am I in the wrong here?

The Lunches Kept Disappearing

The OP explained that she and Omar were both Muslim, which made her meals particularly recognizable to him. She suspected he knew her food was halal and therefore considered it safe for him to eat.

She had already tried talking to him about the missing meals. He denied taking them, leaving her without much recourse beyond continuing to bring food and hoping it would still be there at lunchtime.

Then came Friday.

She brought leftovers containing peanuts and placed the container in the communal refrigerator. Her name was clearly written on it, but there was no warning that the food contained peanuts.

When she returned later and discovered that the meal was missing again, she immediately went looking for Omar.

She found him at his desk eating it.

At that point, there was no more mystery about who had been taking her lunches.

There was, however, a much bigger problem.

Omar was allergic to peanuts.

The OP immediately told him what was in the food. His reaction changed instantly. He panicked, grabbed his EpiPen, and thankfully managed to use it before the reaction became even more serious.

Once the immediate danger had passed, Omar was furious.

He accused her of putting his life at risk by failing to label the food with an allergen warning.

Her response was blunt. She pointed out that the food wasn’t his in the first place.

She compared the situation to her own lactose intolerance. She doesn’t expect every coworker to label their food as containing dairy because she isn’t going around eating other people’s lunches.

Her argument was simple: if you have a potentially deadly food allergy, randomly eating someone else’s unidentified meal is an incredibly dangerous gamble.

The Office Took Sides

The situation eventually reached HR.

According to the OP, HR ruled in her favor regarding the lunch dispute, but introduced a new workplace rule requiring employees to put allergen labels on their food.

That created a second problem.

Now the entire office was annoyed.

Coworkers complained about the inconvenience of labeling food, while others accused the OP of deliberately targeting Omar because she knew about his allergy.

She insisted that was never her intention. She had simply brought food containing an ingredient she normally ate. The missing allergen label was not an attempt to trap him, and she had not added peanuts specifically to punish him.

Still, the accusation left her questioning herself.

Was she technically responsible because she knew Omar was allergic?

Or was Omar responsible for eating food that clearly belonged to somebody else?

Where the Situation Gets Complicated

Food allergies are serious, and workplaces do have legitimate reasons to take them seriously. FARE recommends that employees with food allergies communicate their needs, while workplaces should establish practical systems for safe food storage and respond when other employees interfere with someone’s food.

FARE also recommends that people storing personal lunches in shared kitchens clearly identify their food and use a “please do not touch” message.

That means the safest lesson from this story isn’t that allergen labels are unnecessary. It is that two separate problems were allowed to collide.

Omar needed to take responsibility for managing his potentially life-threatening allergy. At the same time, the office needed a clear policy for communal refrigerators and stolen food. The OP’s food should never have been treated as communal simply because it was stored in a shared refrigerator.

Most importantly, nobody should intentionally put an allergen into food as a trap. Once someone knows another person has a serious allergy, deliberately creating an exposure would cross an entirely different line.

In this case, however, the OP says the peanuts were simply part of her normal meal.

Take a look at the comments from fellow users:

Several people argued that the office should have disciplined Omar for stealing instead of making the OP feel responsible for his decision.

No_Astronaut2795 − Wtf. Your office is absurd. The kid stole food repeatedly and it caught up with him. Unless it's a shared food in a shared lunch I don't understand...

Just because it's stored in a shared place doesn't mean its a damn free for all.

Keep a private cooler bag to store your lunches if that makes you feel better. Edit

twoscoopsofbacon − I once got fired for putting sorpion peppers in a sandwich that, as it turns out, my boss stole.    Worth it.

DontReportMe7565 − What kind of dumbass steals other people's food when he has an allergy that can k__l him? !?! NTA

Others pointed out that the situation could have ended much worse and suggested the OP keep her meals somewhere more secure.

[Reddit User] − It is hard to believe that everyone is blaming you over the actions of a thief. NTA. Bad workplace. ETA: I’d keep putting peanuts in my food...

ThisGirlIsFine − Put a peanut label on all your food whether it has peanuts or not. And put peanuts in it every other day just because.

HambugerLips − Does he know it's haram to lie and steal? He's not a Muslim. He's a joke!

A few commenters went much further, joking about intentionally adding peanuts to future meals.

blobofdepression − I heard you’ve recently switched to cooking exclusively with peanut oil! You read a great article about the *health benefits* (the health benefits being you actually get to...

Stock up on some “contains allergens” stickers, I’m sure you can find some on Amazon. Keep them in your desk, label your lunch when you get into work for the...

Problem solved.   Edit - a word

Headology_Inc − NTA. Omar F'd around and found out. I wouldn't have been nice enough to warn him!

Vivzxxx1001 − Lmao what b__lshit is this? They’re angry because the thief faced the consequences for his own actions? He wouldn’t have had a reaction had he not been stealing.

Don’t let your toxic office guilt trip you, and victimize the thief. You shouldn’t have to label your food, it’s yours. He knows it isn’t his, whatever happens to him...

Tell him and all of them they can go pound sand and if they’re so bothered, they can give their lunches to him. If I were you, I’d be adding...

Mistyam − NTA: I've seen situations at work where the food thief gets busted and their excuse is "I didn't know it was yours. "

And it's like it doesn't matter if you didn't know who it belonged to because you knew it did not belong to you! Why wasn't this asshat fired for stealing?...

To further protect your lunch, can you just always put an allergen label on it regardless if it has peanuts or not? Because since you have to work with this...

The OP didn’t need to create a trap. She didn’t need to teach Omar a lesson. She simply wanted to eat the lunch she had brought to work.

The real workplace failure was allowing food theft to continue until an ordinary meal became a medical emergency.

If there’s one lesson here, it’s a simple one: a shared refrigerator does not mean shared ownership. And if you have a serious food allergy, someone else’s lunch is probably one of the worst things in the office to gamble on.

The peanut wasn’t the problem. Taking someone else’s food was.
