Her Daughter Wanted Her Homeless Boyfriend to Move In. One Mother’s Firm “No” Sparked a Family Debate

Parents often want to support their adult children, but that support can become complicated when a boyfriend or girlfriend suddenly needs a place to live. Where does compassion end and healthy boundaries begin?

One mother recently found herself wrestling with exactly that question after her daughter’s boyfriend asked if he could stay in their home for several months. The young man had a full-time job and was attending college, but after a disagreement over contributing to household expenses, he found himself without a place to live.

Her daughter hoped her mother would open the door.

Instead, she calmly refused.

The decision immediately created tension at home, but the mother believed saying no wasn’t cruel. It was simply protecting her own household and refusing to take responsibility for a problem she didn’t create.

'AITAH… he can’t live with us?'

AITHA for not letting my19 yo daughter’s 20yo boyfriend (homeless) live with us? Context his dad kicked him out cause he didn’t want to help with contributing to the household...

The boyfriend works full time and goes to school. Boyfriend has family in Florida and doesn’t want to leave due to going to school.

He asked to stay with us until November I said no. I like my own space and peace.

I feel he and his father need to talk to get to an agreement or he needs to move back to Florida with his mom and family.

He is not my responsibility. AITAH?

Update: Thank yall for validating what I was already feeling. I’m going to respond to the comments everyone has been supportive and I didn’t think I’d get this many responses...

More context My daughter has an attitude now but ok whatever.

she is not required to pay bills in my home just save $200 a month for herself (she works part time).

I’ve never asked her for a dime as she’s basically still a teenager. I told her if she wants to be with him that’s fine but she’ll be homeless as...

She shut up which is fine if she chooses that I can’t stop her. This guy has been working and says he’s saving money?!

But can’t help his dad out that requires help on bills?! You can’t stay with me for free!

I don’t feel bad now knowing he won’t help me either and will just free load and tell me I’ll give you something when he gets paid… hell no go...

Put your pride to the side or be outside! This has nothing to do with me he needs his family to be involved and I’m not the mediator for the...

A Request That Came With Bigger Questions

The boyfriend explained that he needed somewhere to stay until the end of the semester.

He had family living in another state, but relocating would mean interrupting school. Staying with his girlfriend’s family seemed like the easiest solution.

The mother understood his situation.

She also knew that inviting another adult into her home wasn’t a small favor.

It would change the household overnight.

She valued the quiet routine she had built and wasn’t interested in becoming responsible for someone else’s living situation, especially someone she barely knew.

Looking Beyond the Immediate Problem

As she thought about the request, another detail kept bothering her.

The young man had reportedly left his father’s home after refusing to contribute toward household expenses.

That raised an uncomfortable question.

If he wasn’t willing to help financially where he had already been living, what reason was there to believe he would suddenly become a model housemate somewhere else?

The mother wasn’t interested in taking that chance.

She also worried about her daughter.

Moving in together because of financial hardship can create emotional pressure that healthy relationships aren’t always prepared to handle. If the relationship later became unhappy, her daughter might feel guilty ending it because she would also be making her boyfriend homeless.

From the mother’s perspective, avoiding that situation protected both young adults.

Why Boundaries Aren’t the Same as Being Unkind

Family counselors often explain that helping someone and rescuing someone aren’t always the same thing.

According to Verywell Mind, healthy boundaries allow people to show compassion while recognizing that every adult remains responsible for solving their own problems. Taking on responsibilities that belong to someone else can unintentionally encourage dependency rather than independence.

That doesn’t mean refusing help is always the correct answer.

Sometimes temporary support changes a person’s life for the better.

But experts also note that assistance works best when clear expectations, accountability, and mutual respect already exist.

In this case, the mother believed the young man still had options. He had steady employment, extended family willing to help, and the opportunity to repair his relationship with his father instead of expecting someone else’s household to solve the conflict.

Here's what the community had to contribute:

Many readers felt the mother’s decision reflected healthy boundaries rather than a lack of compassion. They argued that a 20-year-old with a full-time job should first explore family support or alternative housing before expecting his girlfriend’s parents to step in.

StarsBear75063 − He is not my responsibility. Repeat this as many times as necessary. NTA.

unlovelyladybartleby − You should never move in with a partner because you need a place to stay.

If they aren't ready to live together, they shouldn't do it. What if he's an ass to her and she doesn't want to dump him because he'll be homeless? You're...

thingonething − NTA. He won't pay his dad, so he won't pay you. Im betting he won't pay for groceries or contribute to household chores either. He needs to solve...

Adpiava − NTA - he's 20yo, has a job, and he's got multiple options. You're right that he's not your responsibility.

TararaBoomDA − Easiest solution is to ask him to pay a rent of at least $500 a month. Then he will be caught between the devil and the deep blue...

Rude-Truths-702 − NTA- $500 is a good deal, bro needs to grow up.

Others pointed out that moving in together because of financial necessity can create unhealthy dynamics for young couples. If the relationship later struggles, practical concerns may make it much harder to separate.

Enough-Reindeer1033 − NTA. He is not your responsibility. Don't allow him to become it.

FeelingNarwhal9161 − He’s not your responsibility, so NTA for telling him “no. ”

(And is he expecting to stay with you for free if he’s refusing to pay his parents rent? )

I hope there might be more to this story though…I can’t imagine making my 20 year old child pay me $500 a month for rent when they’re going to school...

That’s crazy to me. I’d want them to save up their money and have a nice nest egg (assuming they’re contributing to chores around the house).

I would be so proud of my kid for working full time and going to school at that age.

fpuk69 − NTA he’s got money and family he can stay with

Stealthy-J − NTA. This is a guy who got kicked out for being a freeloader, if he's not willing to contribute to his own household, he damn sure isn't going...

Opening your home is one of the biggest acts of trust a person can offer.

It’s also one of the easiest ways to create long-term stress if expectations aren’t shared from the beginning.

Sometimes the kindest answer is “yes.”

Other times, saying “no” encourages someone to face challenges that ultimately belong to them.

For this mother, protecting the peace of her household didn’t mean she lacked empathy. It meant she believed adulthood comes with learning to solve difficult problems without expecting others to carry the weight.

What do you think? Should parents feel obligated to house their adult child’s partner during a housing crisis, or is it reasonable to keep that boundary firmly in place?
