Her Ex Married Someone Else Just Months After Their Breakup, and Years Later She Still Couldn’t Stop Comparing Herself

There are some breakups that hurt because you miss the person. Others hurt because they leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about yourself.

For this woman, it was both.

Her ex-boyfriend had been part of her life for six years, beginning when they were both in their early twenties. He was her first serious relationship, and despite cheating on her more than once, struggling with alcohol, and repeatedly calling her while drunk and suicidal, she stayed.

She had imagined that eventually they would get married. His family even hinted that a proposal was coming.

Instead, their relationship ended through a text message.

Seven or eight months later, she learned that he had married another woman. Years passed, but she still couldn’t shake the feeling that he had built the life she wanted with someone else.

'My ex got married 7 months after our breakup and I’m still not ok?'

My ex of 6 years got married 7-8 months after we broke up, and years later I still struggle with it

My ex and I were together for 6 years, starting in our early 20s. He was my first serious relationship.

He cheated about a year in, begged me to take him back, and I did. The last 3 years were long distance, and toward the end things became really unhealthy.

He became distant and would sometimes call me drunk and suicidal, and I stayed partly because I was worried about him and felt responsible for him.

The last year we were together, I had a health scare and that's actually how I found out he had cheated on me again (I’m ok now.)

When I confronted him, he denied it, cried, and tried to turn it around on me. I was so exhausted and confused that I started feeling like I was going...

He brought up that I should consider moving to the same state with him after college and the benefits of us getting married when we just started doing long distance...

I wanted to prioritize my career though in a state where there were more opportunities in what I do, so while I agreed it was something we should do eventually...

The last year or two though I was the one to bring up the topic, and how I'd move to his state if we got married.

His sister-in-law had even told me the last year we were together, "The ring is coming soon."

Instead, after another drunk suicide call, he told me he wasn't ready for marriage or kids and wasn't in the right headspace. After 6 years, we ended through a text.

About 7-8 months later, I found out he had married a woman from a different country.

From what I understand, they met weeks after our breakup but I wouldn’t put it past him if he met her before we broke up. A couple of years later,...

He told me he wasn't ready for marriage or kids, yet seemingly built the exact life I wanted with someone else almost immediately.

I see his wife a representation of everything I lack. Beyond her being beautiful, she seems so optimistic, happy and strong even though it seems she came from harder times.

I know this is my own fault and I feel like I was a placeholder. I don’t love him yet I think about what he did to me everyday, it’s...

Edit: I want to thank everyone for taking the time to posit their support, advice and kind words! It really means a lot 🥹♥️ I know this is something I...

Six Years of Hoping Things Would Finally Get Better

The relationship had never been as stable as she wanted to believe.

About a year into dating, her boyfriend cheated. He begged her to take him back, and she did. For the next several years, they tried to make the relationship work, including three years of long distance.

The distance was difficult, but that was not the only problem.

Toward the end, he became increasingly distant. Sometimes he would call her while drunk and threaten suicide. She stayed partly because she loved him, but also because she felt responsible for keeping him safe.

Then she had a health scare.

That frightening period was also when she discovered evidence that he had cheated again.

When she confronted him, he denied it, cried, and turned the situation back on her. Instead of giving her clarity, the conversation left her questioning her own judgment.

Still, she stayed.

Marriage had always been part of the picture. At one point, he suggested that she consider moving to his state after college, and they talked about the benefits of eventually getting married.

But she wanted to build her career somewhere with better opportunities. She did not reject the idea of marriage. She simply believed there was time.

Later, she became the one bringing up marriage more often. She even told him she would move to his state if they got married.

His sister-in-law apparently believed a proposal was coming too.

“The ring is coming soon,” she once told OP.

Instead, after another drunken suicide call, her boyfriend said he was not ready for marriage or children and was not in the right headspace.

After six years together, he ended the relationship through a text.

Then came the part that stayed with her.

Seven Months Later, He Was Married

Roughly seven or eight months after the breakup, OP discovered that her ex had married a woman from another country.

She understood they had apparently met only weeks after the breakup, although she couldn’t completely rule out the possibility that they had met earlier.

A few years later, they had a baby.

And suddenly, the explanation her ex had given her felt impossible to accept.

He had said he wasn’t ready for marriage.

He had said he wasn’t ready for children.

Yet not long afterward, he seemed to build exactly that life with someone else.

OP began looking at his wife as a symbol of everything she believed she lacked. She described the woman as beautiful, optimistic, happy, and strong. The comparison became increasingly painful.

The hardest part was that OP no longer even believed she loved her ex.

She simply couldn’t stop thinking about what happened.

She wondered whether she had been a placeholder. Whether she had wasted six years. Whether she had somehow been the problem.

The relationship was over, but the questions weren’t.

Why His New Life Doesn’t Prove You Were the Problem

Psychologist Mary-Frances O’Connor, PhD, explains that grief after losing an important relationship can involve yearning and a sense that part of the self is missing. When people form close romantic bonds, the brain develops a sense of “we,” so losing the relationship can feel like losing part of one’s own identity.

That idea fits OP’s situation surprisingly well.

She was not simply grieving a boyfriend. She was grieving six years of plans, expectations, memories, and a future she had repeatedly imagined. His quick marriage made that grief more confusing because it appeared to confirm her worst fear: that he had been capable of giving someone else everything he refused to give her.

But his timeline does not tell us why he made those choices.

It certainly does not prove that his wife was somehow better than OP.

People change. Relationships change. Sometimes someone gives one partner promises they cannot or will not fulfill, then behaves differently later. That can be painful without being a verdict on the person left behind.

The comparison is also based on an outside view. OP sees photographs and impressions of a woman who appears happy and strong. She does not see the private reality of that marriage.

And perhaps most importantly, OP’s own story contains evidence that she escaped something unhealthy. Her ex cheated repeatedly, manipulated difficult conversations, struggled with alcohol, and placed her in the position of feeling responsible for his emotional crises.

The fact that he eventually married someone else does not erase any of that.

Let's dive into the reactions from Reddit:

Several commenters pointed out that she had spent six years with someone who cheated and manipulated difficult situations, and that his quick marriage did not transform him into the partner she had always hoped he would become.

Unique-Assumption619 − This isn’t your fault, he’s a toxic person and you are so much better off without him in your life.

Of course that doesn’t make this hurt any less right now, but in time you will see how much better off without him you are.

topania − The only thing you lack is this man who dragged you down for 6 years. He cheated on you and manipulated you to stay with him.

Just because from the outside, his wife looks happy doesn’t mean she is. Be kinder to yourself and realize you weren’t the problem.

notmepleaseokay − Look, when a man moves on that quickly it’s 100% on him.

And yes you were a place holder, but that wasn’t bc of you, it was he was a spineless POS and used you bc he was too afraid to be...

Now you have an amazing opportunity to chose yourself for the first time in 6 years! !

You get to do EVERYTHING without having to worry about his dumbass. Think about it this way: you’re FREE to finally be HAPPY

lenusniq − You dodged a bullet. Who knows how many times he cheated on you. . Thank god that you did not sacrifise your career for this ahole.

Naughtfairie − You definitely dodged a bullet and be thankful you don’t have kids with someone that toxic. No way is he a good father or husband.

HairAccomplished66 − Many men marry foreign women because foreign women are the only one's who will put up with their s__t. You dodged a bullet, but heed this- he WILL...

Important-Anywhere20 − Toxic people do this, so you feel bad about it. They know you will be hurt and they love every bit of it.

Knowing this, should make you switch the script and let it go. Stop drinking his poison and start living a live without a toxic person. He already got too many...

Life is too short to let these people so close. It’s a hard lesson but every day you spent in this mood, will be one day too much. Wish you...

Others told her to stop treating his wife as proof of everything she lacked. One commenter even reminded her that she had avoided giving up her career opportunities for a relationship that ultimately ended anyway.

mountaineermuse − I know why you’re going through, I had an ex get married 3 and a half weeks after he dumped me and we were still living together. They’re...

suckmydictation − I’m sorry your ex sounds like a loser but how did he exactly meet and afford to get someone from another country here? !

bopperbopper − None of this is about you. It truly is him and not you. Maybe it’s as easy as he didn’t want to marry you and you weren’t compatible....

OP did not lose a competition to another woman. There was never a competition.

She lost six years of a relationship that had already become painful, confusing, and unstable. Of course that deserves to be grieved. But the fact that her ex married quickly does not mean he finally became the man she needed, and it certainly does not mean his wife possesses something OP lacks.

Maybe closure will not come from understanding why he chose someone else. Maybe it will come when his marriage stops being a measurement of her own worth.

He built a different life. She gets to build hers now, without waiting for him to decide whether she is worth choosing.
