Her Stepson Turned His Internship Into a Job, So She Refused to Give Her Daughter the Same Chance

For a parent with two children trying to enter the same competitive industry, helping one succeed can create an uncomfortable problem when the other struggles.

That is exactly where this finance professional found herself. After more than 20 years in the industry, she had built a network of contacts at various firms. She could not simply hand her children jobs, but she could recommend them to people who trusted her judgment.

She had done this for both her daughter, Hailey, and her 18-year-old stepson, Hamza.

The difference came afterward. Hailey struggled at several internships, while Hamza impressed the people around him enough to turn his unpaid internship into a paid position.

Unfortunately, it happened at the exact company where Hailey had previously failed.

Now Hailey wanted her stepmother to get her another chance. The problem was that doing so could cost the parent something she considered extremely important: her professional reputation.

Her Stepson Turned His Internship Into a Job, So She Refused to Give Her Daughter the Same Chance

'AITA for refusing to get my daughter the same internship as my stepson?'

The main reason I'm asking this, is because I feel like I have no good options left. I'm in a position where I don't want to hurt my daughter, but...

I've worked in finance for over 20 years. Not to get into details, but because of my career development, I have many connections to different firms. I also have two...

Both of them have gotten internships through me, not in the 'title on paper' easy way, but nonetheless opportunities that a lot of other kids aren't fortunate enough to have.

I can't just pull strings and get them hired, but I can suggest them as options to people who trust my word.

Its important to note that I need to stake a substantial amount of my reputation on these internships, because I'm giving people my word that I'm not recommending these kids...

Hailey has been unsuccessful in the internships I've helped her with. I don't blame her for this, she's a very bright girl, but her talents may not lie strictly in...

It does mean, that I can no longer recommend her to people, as I do have a reputation to manage, and looking like a tyrannical nepotist is pretty bad for...

My stepson on the other hand, has had the exact opposite experience. Despite being slightly less hardworking than his sister, he tends to be very good with people, and has...

He's 18, and has been offered a paid position by the company he was doing an unpaid internship for. Unfortunately, this was the same place that Hailey did not succeed...

This is quite hard for Hailey, because she has to listen to the same people who she did not succeed with, praising her brother quite a lot. I've tried to...

Hailey blew up at me recently, telling me that it wasn't fair that I got Hamza the 'better' position . I have explained to her that I did not get...

I am not getting them positions at my company, I don't control what my contacts do after the initial recommendation.

She asked me to try and get her the same internship, but I told her that I couldn't get her anything else until she could be a bit more likable...

She fought with me, and called me some rude names, but ultimately ended up crying. She has decided that I think she's unlikable, and the only way to prove that...

I really can't risk putting my reputation on her again, but I understand that this is very upsetting for her.

She Had Opened the Same Door for Both Children

The parent was clear that her connections were not a magic hiring button.

When she recommended one of her children, she was putting her own credibility behind them. Her contacts trusted her enough to consider someone she recommended, but once the introduction was made, the child still had to perform.

That distinction mattered.

Hailey was intelligent and hardworking, but according to her mother, finance simply might not be the field where her strengths showed best. Hamza, meanwhile, was described as somewhat less hardworking but naturally good with people and particularly strong at research.

His unpaid internship eventually turned into a paid position.

The painful part for Hailey was watching people who had not been impressed by her praise her brother.

She continued attending some of the same networking dinners because she needed an internship herself, even though the situation clearly made her uncomfortable.

Eventually, she confronted her mother.

Hailey believed her mother had effectively gotten Hamza the “better” opportunity and demanded the same kind of help for herself. Her mother explained that she had given both children the same initial opportunity. She had not secured Hamza’s job. The company had decided to keep him.

When Hailey asked for another recommendation, her mother refused.

She told her daughter she could not keep staking her reputation on recommendations that were not working.

Then came the sentence that hurt Hailey most.

Her mother told her she needed to become more “likable” to employers.

Hailey took that personally. If her mother really believed she was unlikeable, she argued, then refusing to help her again only proved that she was being judged differently from Hamza.

And suddenly, the argument was no longer just about internships.

The “Likability” Question Is More Complicated Than It Sounds

There is one uncomfortable possibility worth considering here.

The mother may genuinely be protecting her professional reputation. But Reddit commenters were right to question exactly what she meant by “likable.”

Research has repeatedly found that women can face a workplace double bind, where being assertive and competent can sometimes clash with expectations that women should also appear warm and agreeable. The American Psychological Association has summarized research showing that women succeeding in traditionally male-dominated careers can be judged more harshly on likability, even when their competence is recognized.

Harvard Business Review has likewise discussed the well-documented tension women can face between being perceived as competent and being perceived as likable.

That does not prove sexism caused Hailey’s failures. The original post simply does not contain enough information to know why she was unsuccessful.

But it does mean the mother should probably ask a more useful question than whether her daughter is “likable.”

What specifically went wrong?

Was Hailey missing technical skills? Did she struggle with communication? Was she too quiet in meetings? Did she have difficulty networking? Was she being judged unfairly? Or was finance simply a poor fit?

Those answers would give Hailey something she could actually work on.

Here's the comments of Reddit users:

pottersquash − NTA. No offense but wtf is Hailey's problem? I dunno, this feels like her outburst and not understanding the situation is really indicative as to why she didn't...

Kauldwin − I want to offer some food for thought. You initially say that Hailey's talents may not lie in finance, but then later in the post you mention that...

Obviously we can't know the whole situation here from one Reddit post, but what I will say is that finance tends to be a more conservative field, and based purely...

Many of the business traits that are prized in men are rejected in women (men are "leaders," women are "bossy," men are "analytical," women are "cold," etc. ). I don't...

And if that does turn out to have some bearing on it, then I think Hailey's frustration is understandable, even if you're not exactly the right target for it. NTA...

UnderABig_W − This isn’t really an a__hole/not the a__hole thing, but your daughter having a semi-understandable crisis (she’s apparently pretty bad at the thing she really wants to do, which...

) Granted, she’s taking that crisis out on you in an unproductive way, but I think a better way forward here would be to meet with Hailey and decide what...

definitelynotjava − Info: how exactly did hailey fail? What do you mean by being "likeable" to her employers? This sounds like dudebros closing rank. Are you Hailey's stepmom or stepdad?

Annabelle_Sugarsweet − NTA a good learning experience for your daughter to not take opportunities for granted. Though you opened a door for her, it’s still on her to do the...

The whole point of it is to see what you are and not good at and what you do and don’t like.

Charming_Figure_9053 − NTA - You opened the door for both of them, one went though one failed to You gave equal opportunities If you do think her talents lie elsewhere,...

Dry-Reception-2388 − This entitlement and manipulation from her is probably a solid indication as to why she has been unsuccessful. NTA.

In fact I think you would be if caved to this from her. She needs to learn from this. I would be sure to support her through it and make...

Which-Notice5868 − INFO: Why was Hailey "unsuccessful"? You explicitly say she's hard-working and don't really give examples of what she did wrong.

Moose-Live − I've tried to get her to just avoid the dinners and networking Why is your daughter deciding whether she accompanies you to work dinners?

That's for you to decide. I'm not even sure why it's an option, she doesn't work with you or in your industry. She also sounds too immature and entitled to...

Aggravating_Baker557 − \- Is she lacking talent or training? \- Is this skills related or experience? \- Have you tried mentoring her or suggesting classes she could take to improve?

Is there an element of preference for one gender over another in this field? If she is bright, why not help her develop her aptitudes for a career in whichever...

Final Thoughts

The mother is not obligated to put her professional reputation on the line indefinitely. She gave both children access to opportunities many young graduates never receive. Hamza earned his position after the door was opened, and Hailey’s disappointment does not make that unfair.

But Hailey’s tears suggest that this is bigger than one internship.

She may be watching her brother succeed in an environment where she desperately wanted to belong, while hearing from the person whose opinion matters most that employers simply do not like her.

That is a brutal thing for a young graduate to hear.

The best next step may not be another finance referral at all. It may be sitting down with Hailey, figuring out exactly where she struggled, and helping her find a field where her strengths can finally become an advantage.

Sometimes supporting your child means opening another door, not forcing the first one to stay open.
